Reasons why Shula is no longer needed in Carolina...

Today was a prime example of why Shula is a major thorn in the offense's ass. Let's go over the reasons why he should no longer have a job here.

First of all, whenever we call a pass play it is not only long developing, there is hardly ever a safety valve for Cam. There is no receiver or RB underneath to help bail Cam out when no one is open and/or the offensive line collapses. The result is Cam trying to do too much and make something out of nothing. It also gets our QB hit because he has no where to throw the ball.

When our offensive line is having a bad game, Shula insists on his patented long developing pass plays that results in sacks and/or QB taking another hit. He refuses to call screens, slants, or short curl routes in these situations.

Timing. Shula has terrible timing. 99% of the time he calls the wrong plays at the wrong time. When the offense needs a spark, he continues being overly conservative. When he sees the D playing well, he seizes the opportunity to become as conservative as possible. Runs up the middle. Sweep toss runs. WR screen passes. I mean we didn't have a huge lead today, yet Shula was calling plays as if we were up by 30. How many times on 3rd and 1 have we seen Shula call for a long pass play? How many times have we seen on 2nd or 3rd and long and we call a RB screen pass or draw? Shula has no capacity whatsoever when to call the right plays at the right time.

Shula also has trouble adjusting or just flat our refuses to. When runs up the middle do not work, most offensive coordinators would try something different. Not Shula. That only means he needs to call 20 more runs up the middle. Screw running outside the tackles. Shula has a point to make. No one knows what that point is, but he is going to make it.

Shula also turns away from what is working. If Olsen is setting defenses on fire, expect more runs. If the run game is going well, expect more passes. Btw, where was Olsen today? Why was he not targeted more? What happened to those play calls to Olsen that helped out our offense?

Red Zone play calling. All through out last season and this season, Shula has had a terrible time calling plays that results in TDs. This can also go along with his inability to call the right plays at the right time. He often turns into utter crap in the red zone even after calling rare great drives.

(Edit) Oh! How can I forget? 4th and 25 with 1 last chance to win the game and we call a draw? Just lulz.

Overall, Shula can not be counted on. He can not help us out in crucial situations. He is bullheaded for such a crappy coordinator. If we are struggling, expect to see more of the same instead of something different. He does not know how to mix it up and keep defenses on their toes. His play calling is very predictable and plain. So I ask, what is the point of keeping him around? Consistency? Well if we want to consistently suck on offense then we are doing a damn good job.

(Edit)

Just adding something more here about Shula's predictability:

Oh something else I forgot to mention. On the KB drop drive, we called for a run up the middle for no gain and we had to settle for a FG. Guess where KB was on that play? On the fuging sidelines. Shula might as well walked off the sidelines, into the Seahawks huddle and told them we were going to run it. That's basically what he did anyway. This is what I'm talking about when I say his plays are predictable.

Agree with everything  you said. However, the Panthers did have one big pass play to Benjamin (all Cam and Benji on that one).

Why people not saying anything about kelvin td pass drop that was huge changed the way the game turned out and was played

that's one play from a rookie vs 30 minutes from a alleged professional. we survived the drop but not the lack of execution.

Because we should have put that game away the way we controlled everything in the first half. One play doesn't define the whole game.

Yes that's another point I should've made...When the offense makes a mistake, Shula uses that excuse to call a bad game the rest of the game. That was 1 drop. We were in the redzone what 3 times? Yea Cam fumbled on a play action, but why was that play called there? Again, timing is one of Shula's biggest obstacles.

The biggest problem is that these observations have been getting made for the last 3 seasons.  I watch every game and I usually know before the snap if we are going to throw or run and I'm just a random nobody.  You have to imagine opposing defenses are equally tuned in to whats about to happen.  Whats so frustrating is when we mix things up and pass out of a running formation, or vise versa, it seems like we typically have success.  Think about how successful we have been in the hurry up during the limited times we've seen it this year, yet we absolutely never ever do it unless we have no choice.

Seems like an offensive coordinators job is to call a game that keeps the defense off guard and that just isn't happening in these parts.

Another thing about that "drop" was that it would have been a touch catch even if he initially held on because Sherman had his hand in there and would have had a good shot at knocking it out of his hands so I would bet that he doesn't hold on either way.

If KB catches that touchdown early on, we probably win this game and no one is questioning his playcalling (at least not today).

I think the offense's problem today was simply the personnel. We just have 4 jars of jizz and Ryan Kalil trying to protect the QB. And our only consistent receiving threat is a great possession receiver that isn't a threat to run after the catch.

    • I don't think Rodgers but probably not for the political reasons I bet a lot of posters are motivated by. I just think he is not the QB for the Panthers, at all.
    • Sun Devils just scored another TD on BYU, 14-0
    • It wasn't great but  the 2022 NYG won 9 of 16 games plus a playoff game. He had a 92.5 passer rating. 15 pass TDs 3200 yards, 7 rushing TD, 700 yards 6 fumbles 3 lost.  His first season he had 18 fumbles lost 11. Wow.  Anyhow he had problems in 2023 with injuries and didn't win poo before tearing his ACL. This year, no Barkley, not good, but you know.... these ACLs take a while and it was right and he throws right so pushes off of it.  I agree it doesn't hurt to let that guy compete cheap. You don't hand him the job like with Bryce or NYG with him.  When I look at what we have been saddled with, he doesn't look worse and has the physical advantage. So I don't get the umbrage given our situation. This "No we won't settle for anything less that the best" attitude and then taking Bryce Young was pathetic and I think that attitude brought us to where we are. That's where that poo gets you. Away from Mayfield, away from Darnold, even away from PJ - just to replace them with an inferior PJ.  At the same time I am not really advocating for the guy just looking at it objectively. It could be another guy with the same story. And yes the odds of him getting it are low but the numbers and performance from 2022 are for sure better than we see with Bryce even after a season of major propping him up with better players around him. Take a look don't take a look he fails or he doesn't fail...   to instead sit here and be happier with what we have is bullshit.
