Big Problem - DEs against the run

Hardy is the best run-defending DE in the league behind Pierre-Paul.

I dunno if I'd even put him behind JPP.  Hadn't ever put any thought into the comparison though.  The last two years I thought of Hardy as the best run defending DE in the league.  It's amazing how far he progressed in that area, cuz he was terrible at it his first year or two.

Playing the run well is what makes a DE elite. Anyone can rush the passer, look at Addison. If you can play the run and rush the passer equally well you are elite. Other way to reach overrated elite status is being great at pass rushing alone.

That and also ball awareness for when you can't get to the QB, JJ Watt is by far the best in the league at that.

Imagine the 2003 team. Take away Julius Peppers, his backup, Brad Hoover, Stephen Davis, Deshaun Foster, Ricky Manning JR. What do you have? I've been tough on the staff and FO lately but considering that and the fact that as of this moment we lead our division, what more can you ask?

Similar to the 06 postseason, peppers was banged up from that Chicago game and we were without Davis and foster and then goings went out with a concussion.

The whole DL is the problem( minus kk). Yes, yes we know about hardy, but its a serve drop in play this year. Star came in looking light and he's playing that way too. Horton, I believe hardy has better numbers than him on the season. Sure addison flashed a few games, but thats when he don't have to play the run. Edwards has flashed albeit less than kk, still overall poor. Early no comment for being and playing like a rook.

The problem is league has made adjustments( Tape been out long enough) The huge problem is the offense isn't allowing the DL to cause 2013 havoc. qbs are getting the ball out quicker and the panthers CBs give the most dam space to WRs. So mcderpett is calling blitzs more, well the panthers havnt practiced in a heavy biltz system. The Ocs are calling a great game against, that's where the big gains and busted plays have come form. Added to issue are the starting 5 out of 5 DBs are new to each other and the system. Healthy Harper in the 2013 havoc system, would have been a monster.

Sad to watch the last five games.

One, I agree with the poster who said Star looks light. That's true, and I hope he bulks back up in the offseason. The loss of Hardy has hurt duh, and the injury to Johnson isn't talked about enough. But I said this in another thread and I'll say it again...

The Losses of both Mike Mitchell and Frank Alexander have really taken there toll. Mitchell was a beast against the run and while not the best cover guy had a nose for at least being around the ball. Plus he brought that attitude we don't have right now. And Alexander, that's a guy with the tools to be an every down DE. He isn't the freak show talent Hardy is, but it really took Hardy three seasons to breakthrough and I feel the same was going to happen this year with Alexander.

Yeah Frank Alexander depresses me. He was our legit only chance at having less of a drop off when Hardy went away. Star has been a victim of our previous awesome 1st rounders and the fact we rarely hear anything about him. I feel like its easy to overlook him when maybe he needs a little more heat to bring his game up. sure he's not in a position that churns out the flashy stats but if he was a top overall or top 5 talent in the draft he should be noticeably blowing it up often.
