Godfrey Question for the Cap Experts

how much does his release cost the team in dead money / cap space? how does this affect us for the coming offseason? im not terribly familiar with cap calculations. i can compare figures after they've been calculated but the calculation still gets me

Add to his question does it save anything this year?

He would have counted for $4.1m in salary next year, $3m in dead money. So we net out and gain $1.1m in cap space for next year, I believe.

You aren't really gaining anything because you don't have him and have to replace him with someone else.  Just like we aren't gaining 13 million by not resigning Hardy, we are simply redistributing his money on other guys.  Yeah it might seem like semantics but it is a pet peeve of mine like when my wife says she saved me 200 hundred dollars but buying something on sale and only spending 300 dollars.  She didn't save me anything she just spent 300 hundred instead of 500 bucks.

The cap hit is about $2.1m this year, $3m next, then he's off the books. In other words we only saved about $1m this year but about $4.1m next.

He was also due another $6.4m in 2016, but that's now off the books.

There's no dead money for him next year so he's actually off the books after this season with dead money totaling 2.9 million

Doesn't really work like that. His cap number for next year before being cut was 7.1m. His new cap number is 3m for next year. We will gain around 4 million in cap space.

I would call 4 million gaining something. That is if you think we can replace his production for that amount.

Maybe the term "freeing up" would work for everyone. I personally like the word gain though as we now have cap space to utilize that we didn't before.
