How would you build your offense around Cam?

Cam is a dual threat QB with a rocket arm who can make all the throws and can rack up 100 yards on the ground any day. If you were a GM what would be your ideal way to build a team around him. Would you focus on:

1. a stout running attack with defense ranked 6-10.

2. a down field passing attack with heavy focus on protection. Defense ranked mid teens.

3. a stout top 5 defense with him as a game manager,

4. a spread Chip Kelly type offense. Defense ranked mid teens.

Etc.

In other words what type of coach/OC would you want for this team?

Build Cam a decent OL and get an offensive cord. that can lead a balanced offensive attack. A mid level defense should be enough to win a lot of games.

I would look to install an even more Erdhart-Perkins oriented system (Shula sorta does one but not really) more in the mold between a Whisenhunt and McCoy.

Prioritizing the needs:

LT

A balanced RB

RT

WR

An NFL ready scat back/vet

OL depth

If Rivera really fugs up by the end of the season, seek out our franchises first QB to be either our HC/OC.

Start with the o-line. You want to find an Otah type RT, a monster who makes it difficult to see around him. When Otah mauled someone, they had no choice but to give in to his will. Williams would hide behind that massive monster, and then race out from behind him depending how the rape was going, and LBs had trouble seeing Williams. Put Cam and Stewart in the read option behind an Otah, and you have a run play that will take 9 in the box to slow down. No team, I don't care who they have on defense, could stop that run play. Period. The problem is that Otah was a HOF level OT who doesn't come around that often. But we can get as close as possible early in the draft if there is one.

With LT the standard is Jordan Gross. Solid, dependable, intelligent, friendly, and on point with his pass protection 95% of the time. He had a few terrible games, the Redskins game comes to mind, but the LT needs to put the QB at ease by protecting his blind side with consistency. Find a vet in FA, or via the draft.

The OG situation is a problem. Amini can't block stunts and blitzes well. That puts Cam in serious danger, and brings a halt to our offense far too often for it to be effective against certain teams. We need an OG who has decent power, and can block stunts and blitzes much better than Amini. The only sure fire way to get a guy like this is in FA. The draft is risky and OGs shouldn't be that expensive in FA.

The o-line would then be good enough to allow for the Panthers to become a great team.

Add a deep threat WR and you've really got something.

1.) Deep threat WR (Ex: Desean Jackson)

2.) Run Blocking OL (Ex: Eagles O-line)

3.) Great O-Coordinator (Ex: Chargers HC Mike McCoy)

I actually think we can fix this up in a year...Fire Shula if we don't make the playoffs

sorry...just have to lol at mike mccoy as an example of a great OC.

i agree with everything else, tho.

OL, deep threat WR, and an upgrade at OC. everything else is pretty much taken care of. he's got. good and reliable group of receivers including the TEs and if the RBs could stay healthy, i think we would be ok (the OL is the bigger problem). and even though the interior of the OL has been beat up and sketchy, i like their potential. it's the outside of that line that has bothered me this past year. we haven't taken OT seriously (or we've been seriously wrong about chandler and bell). imo, we are three players (deep threat WR, 2 OTs) and one OC away from giving cam what he needs. and philly brown could be that deep threat guy....at least i hope he is. sure would make things easier.

getting the defense back on track and settle on some healthy RBs would help cam a lot as well.

amini is still young at the position. this is the misunderstood problem with OL. people think it's just a matter of big guys seeing someone that needs hitting and then hitting them. the position is a lot more cerebral than that and it takes a good amount of learning and experience to be able to fully grasp the role. it takes 2-3 years for an OLineman to get it figured out, imo. one thing that also helps is chemistry with the OL and that takes years, not weeks to form and we just haven't had that.

i will say, tho, that time is running out on amini. if he can't get it right we might have to move on and because we have other needs at OT, i really hope we don't have to replace amini.

Realistically, you have to build the 2 spots that MH neglected like a blind, one-legged, Romanian orphan-- WR and OT.

Realistically, you have to consider there is going to be about $15 m in cap room in free agency after Cam is signed.  No major contracts to renegotiate, so lets say we keep our core and have $12 m in free agency.  (These estimates have not been researched, so they are hypothetical, wild guesses for the sake of conversation.)

With that money, I think I look to sign a solid FS and OT.  Forget rationalizing on D, but a solid investment ($7-8 million) is worth the money at this point.

In the draft, I like the OTs this year, and since so many teams reached for them in 2014, I expect a solid OT to be there late in the first round.  Grab your LT of the future.

With the pool of young talent we have developing at G, we could be studly with a couple OTs.  THAT opens the run game, something we need to be effective.

In the second round, I think I draft a SS.  I want a solid FS, SS combo.  With Boston and a veteran FS, a young SS with huge upside would make the D instantly better.

In the third round, I draft a CB, hoping to add to the process of getting better there.  Norman is improving and Benwikere is solid.  White has his moments.  I am not a Cason fan--not a good fit.  A young CB could make this unit much better.

In the fourth round, I am hoping that there is some value to be found at DT.  We could lose our Old DTs (Cole, Edwards) because they are old and in contract years.  A big, run stuffing DT would be nice.

In the fifth round, I probably take a RB.  Stew and Williams might not be here next year.  They are devalued, so you can usually find good value here.

I am counting on three things happening:

1. The DE situation corrects itself.  I am thinking that Hardy could be back if he is found innocent, but let's say he is gone.  Ealy is about where a young DE should be.  He has to get stronger, but I expect him to start in 2015.

2.  The WR situation clarifies itself.  I was tempted to draft one, but lets not smother potential already on the roster. Bersin is doing everything right--hands, routes, etc.  Brown has shown potential as a slot WR.  We still have Cotch and Avant on contracts for 2015.  It takes the young guys time to develop.  I think Bersin will see more and more playing time and will emerge as a solid player by season's end.  Maybe we have a good group right now that will get better with better protection for the QB and a running game.

3. 2 guards emerging as studs in 2015.  Turner is showing promise, and Silatolu will have experience.  Velasco and Kugbila all have potential.  On paper, this team is solid up the middle.
