Bad Hurney Contracts: Who's Left?

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

I'm not so sure we keep Johnson going forward.

People have been speculating on when Williams or Stewart (or both) will be jettisoned for years.

I thought I read our restructure made him harder to cut. Some people thought all that dead money would be spread out over a modest extension. But that is just heresay.

One thing I keep seeing is this idea that Jonathan Stewart and Deangelo contracts can't be hampering us THAT much. Well they are, but also Jordan Gross, Jon Beason, and Steve Smith have huge cap figures for us right now.

There is only one guy on our active 53 man roster with a bigger cap hit than Jon Beason. Get your head around that.

Here are some guys still on our books:

James Anderson

Sione Fua

Joe Adams

Haruki Nakamura

Tiquan Underwood

Geoff Hangartner

We have $22m in dead money on our cap this season thus far. That is 17% of our adjusted salary Cap.

Only 66.9% of our salary cap will be on the active roster come Sunday, barring further moves.

We love Mike Tolbert, but he's the lowest paid running back in a running back by committee. His cap hit this season is over $3.3m. If big Mike were on the active roster today, 3 of our top 10 cap hits would be Running Backs. That is sad considering the return on the investment.

I did some research earlier today and I found threads on different Panthers sites, including this one, that reference the Panthers and cap hell dating back to early 2008. You can find them every year since then except for the uncapped 2010 season where we went 2-14. It's pretty pathetic. I will never ever forget all of the times I was told by people on this site that Hurney was a cap guru, a cap GOD even. Such a cap guru that we've been in cap hell in:

2008

2009

2011

2012

2013

2014

I'm sure 2015 as well

I'm just grateful and a little surprised we're not still paying Jake Delhomme at this point.

CJ and D'Will are tough decisions in 2015.  I've been more on the train that think they cut ties with DW this coming offseason.  I'm about 80/20 CJ stays/leaves where it's more 35/65 with DeAngelo.

I'm thinking D'Will is sure as gone in 2016 with Stewart a possibility as well.

I am pretty sure 2016 is a voidable year for Dwill.  For those that don't know a voidable year is pretty much a dummy year added on the end of a contract to spread out a cap hit from a bonus paid to a player.

In these situations the player holds the right to void the contract and the team still has the dead money on the books.  The actual listed salary for those years are really low so there is no reason for the player not to void the contract.

We actually have a fair amount of voidable years tacked on the end of several of our players.  Some of these were actually done by DG to give us some relief in the short term.  If anything this is just further proof of how bad our cap was when DG took over.

Big Money and Stewart are the worst remaining Hurney deals.

if we don't re-sign Hardy........  I believe we're starting from scratch at DE next season.   Ealy probably won't be ready and none of our other back-up DEs are ready for a bigger role,  imo.

Can't see G-man paying Charles Johnson $20M against the cap in '15.       He either takes a pay cut,  or,  he gets cut.    imo.  I believe we save around $6M by cutting him.

Na man honestly people actually thought the was the cap man...now some people may have been facetious but certainly not the majority and the context was when they discussed it not saying "HurneyMagic"

I think we can open up even more cap room by designating CJ a post-June 1 cut. Think it would be around $10m or so. However, we won't have that cap space until after June 1st when all the good FA players will be gone anyway. Might be worth it to stick it out for one more year at $20m, given that CJ when healthy is still a good to great DE. After next season CJ's dead money is only ~$4m. That would open up $11m in cap space for the 2016 offseason.

I think the likely scenario is keeping CJ for one more year, letting Hardy walk, and designating DeAngelo as a post-June 1 cut. I'm not a cap guru by any means, but I believe that will open up roughly $16m of cap space.

Then following next season we cut CJ (opens up $11m in cap space) and J-Stew (as post-June 1) and we are finally free of Hurney's tyranny.
