They just extended him.

GM gave him the worst OL and secondary in the NFL. Gettlemen deserves more poo than Rivera. Hurney mess isn't an excuse for how comically weak our OL and secondary are....you aren't suppose to win when given that

It was probably at Rivera's behest that Hardy be given the franchise tag.  That royally screwed us for the entire season.  We could have brought in Veldheer and brought back Mitchell to play alongside DeCoud with the money that is being poured down the drain in Hardy's bank account.  I also blame Rivera for the bad offensive line overall, because of dumb picks like Amini and Kugz.

I say 2%, only because Gettleman put Rivera on notice when he was hired and I'm sure at some point he would like to hire his own coach. But Gettleman will be here long enough to get that chance, and he knows the salary cap, injuries, and the Hardy situation is directly responsible for a lot of the mess this year. Besides, 7-8 wins might enough to win the division this season anyway.

Just gonna repost htis I guess:

Pre-Rivera: 2-10 (last in NFCS)

Rivera Year 1: 6-10 (3rd in NFCS)

Rivera Year 2: 7-9 (2nd in NFCS)

Rivera Year 3: 12-4 (NFCS Champs - 2nd round playoff exit)

Rivera Year 4: 3-3-1 (1st in NFCS)

We're trending upwards in all the stats that matter and we're now in a 2 horse race to be back to back NCFS champs for the first time in history.

Go ahead. Replace your head coach.

not just panther history, history of the NFCS, theres never been back to back champs.

I know people believe this because of what happened with John Fox, but they forget what happened with Dom Capers.

Dom Capers got a ten year contract extension after the 1996 season.  He was fired just two years into it after the team finished 4-12 in 1998.  And we didn't really have a true GM at the time so the decision was made primarily by Jerry Richardson.

Rivera's extension was only four years.

I definitely think it's possible.

Yeah, he has no offensive line and talent issues.

But none of that is to explain for his terrible clock management, undisiplined players in most of his years, terrible challenges, super conservative coaching minus one second half of a year, keeping a bland OC in an offensive league, John Fox-like ability to keep aging and over-the-hill vets playing over young players, etc. etc.

He's a solid coach, like John Fox was here, but I don't think he'll ever get us over the hump unless we get a really good OC in here with some freedom.  I don't see what happening with Ron, as he wants to keep playing in the NFL like it was 20 years ago while things continue to change around him.

Really depends on what happens the rest of the year.  In a ridiculously down year in the NFC South the Panthers have a chance to make the playoffs at .500 or even with a losing record.  What really bothers me is Rivera is a defensive head coach, and it's the defense that is losing the Panthers games.  You can get away with having a mediocre offense if the defense is kicking ass, but you can't get away with having the worst defense in the NFL if you're Rivera.

Rivera has definite weaknesses as a coach.

He's not a great 'in-game' manager, and his personnel choices at both player and coach leave something to be desired (more player than coach, but still).

Literally laughing at people that think we're competing for an NFC South title because of Ron Rivera's coaching. Literally any other year in the past decade we would be talking draft right now because one of the other NFC South teams would be at least 5-2. We're just lucky enough we're all sucking at once.

    • yeah. winter backpacking trips were the most miserable and amazing experiences. same with the coldest and snowiest hunting  experiences. i love being in it. makes for incredible memories. the worse it was, the more i ended up loving it. made the greatest memories.  i just want to get out of it afterwards.
    • I forgot about Jackson...definitely elite.  The sad part of your list is that 2 of them were 'there for the taking for the Panthers'.  Rumor has it that Hurney loved Herbert and was vetoed on trying to trade up.  And rumor has it that Frank & McCown wanted Stroud.  I believe both rumors.
    • I went on a solo elk hunt in the Flat Tops. It was awesomely miserable. LOL It was a late season hunt, I think third season and it was forecasted to snap off cold with highs in the upper thirties and lows in the single digits. fug it, I'm going anyway. They were wrong. The highs were in the low 20s and the lows were in the negative teens. I shivered so hard the first night I thought my teeth were going to break. It was the only time I've ever been legit concerned that I might be in trouble. Crawled out of my sleeping bag and got a fire started and suffered through the night bundled up next to the fire. I slept the next two nights literally wearing every stitch of clothing I'd brought with Nalgenes full of near boiling water in the bottom of my sleeping bag. That was the only way to have non-frozen water in the morning anyway. There was about a foot of snow on the ground and the melt/freeze crust was almost enough to support your weight but you'd go crashing through just as you went or make your step. It was exhausting travel and every step sounded like a rifle shot. Hunting was basically impossible. I never saw an elk in those four days, only saw 5-6 deer. LOL It was brutal but I loved it. Absolutely beautiful country that is never been to before and haven't been back since. I needed that four day complete break from society fighting for my life against the elements. I'm weird like that.
