Clinton Portis on WFNZ yesterday....

I said in another thread, if there's one thing that could be learned from this season: it's a good OL can take you far. Dallas is a prime example.

Cam with a good OL can make any WR's look good. I was more saying signing a guy like Desean since it was said that they're buddies.

Yes and we should have been starting that process before cam even arrived.

Do some of yall just think this poo happens overnight?

I don't think they "sacrificed" O-Line.

I think they picked the wrong formula.

Gettleman believes that the best way to build a dominant offensive line is to get a solid young core of players and allow them to grow together and build chemistry. It's a solid strategy, but you have to have the right guys to make it work.

Rivera, who as we've discussed before tends to put waaaaay too much faith in less talented guys that try really hard, believed that Bell and Chandler could be part of that core. I'm not entirely sure Gettleman did, but it's the plan he signed on for so the end result still ultimately falls on him.

So, bad plan, made worse by the fact that most of the better options on the line are now hurt. Kalil is the only good lineman we have who's healthy.

Oy :(

We would not have made an offer to Collins if that were the case.

Our hands were tied

Look at Gettleman's pressers though.  He's fairly open/honest about what he's doing.  Think about the Smitty question, he said, "we're evaluating" when asked.  Pretty clear he wasn't shy about letting people know what he was thinking.  I almost guarantee that if he didn't think Cam was our franchise QB, he would have said, "we'll see," or "we're evaluating," when he was asked.  That's just how he rolls.

"Cam Newton" is a different animal. You can talk about "evaluating" Smith or the offensive line and get away with it not blowing up in the media. You can't say the same thing about "Cam Newton," or appear to be doubting him.

Look at how the "7 second pause" story took off. That's what he didn't expect to happen. If there's anything we can be sure he's learned, it's not to make that mistake again.

We haven't done dick all since and before Cam has arrived and that's the issue. Everyone keeps coming up with reason as to why it can wait another year.

Even this offseason people wanted to build the OL and wait to give Cam weapons again. Which looking back, would have been more than fine but we didn't do either... Again.

No one is saying you have to wait two more years. The process has already started and will continue to get better this offseason and next before we have don't have any options to keep Cam. I mean....where did you read someone saying we had to wait two more years?

It has been said repeatedly on this board and in this very thread that we should be out of our cap problems in 2 years and at that point, we can start to bring in some talent. I'm sure you have seen that same argument on here a number of times.

Teams can manipulate the cap. It is done all the time. Look at Flacco's last contract and what the cap hit was in it's first year. The challenge is signing the right guys. Sitting back and waiting for FA to shake out and then picking through the remains is not always a wise plan. Expecting someone like Godfrey, who was crap before his injury, to come back the year after an Achilles and be a key cog in our defense is pretty questionable. Making what appeared to be a half-hearted attempt to get some help on the o-line is highly questionable.

I'm not putting it all on Gettleman, as I'm sure he was influenced by the coaches opinions on who could play and who couldn't. But the bottom line is we can't keep riding the cap hell excuse forever. One way or another, it's time to get Cam some help.

The fact is GMan didn't reach for any linemen that he would either have to overpay for a short term solution or who he didn't believe were any better than what he thought we had. He was wrong about the talent, we all see that. But you're sitting here saying he neglected to help the line because he wants Cam to fail and you're saying that is a fact and anyone who disagrees with you is a moron. WHAT????

Cam "failing" is the wrong language. If Gettleman doesn't believe that Cam is the guy he wants to build his team around, then why would he want to give him a long-term deal and pay him? He wouldn't want to. Likewise, if Cam's bad offensive line gets him maimed, he'll have an excuse not to pay him.

The o-line hasn't been a priority. Beyond that, eveyone has the right to speculate whatever they want about why that is the case and not give "Dave" the benefit of the doubt on it.
