Clinton Portis on WFNZ yesterday....

Correct me if I'm wrong but Cam can't even be a FA for two more seasons, no?

3 more season after this one.

the 5th year option (which is already activated) for next year and 2 years with the franchise tag.

Which would make it very unwise for him to not take a deal in Carolina and wait for money which he cant even discuss with other teams for 3 more seasons.

Super stars just dont get away that easy in the NFL .

Chances of this happening are less than 10%.

Hardy off is off the books next year. Completely. Getting someone like Collins and investing in five years with a cap hit of six million each year is not really feasible for us (it would have been more for us to outbid tampa). We really have no money because of cam and Luke's contracts coming up

I'd agree.

Mind you, I would have thought it possible before last year's tackle contracts hit the books.  Once those ridiculous numbers hot the news though, there was just no shot.

The tackle issue needs to be solved with a high draft pick.  I'm seriously hoping that happens next year.

Please tell me the picks you would have made in the top two rounds since cam has been drafted. That's what it takes with an all star lineup like that. Jesus they spent a first rounder on a center

2012: Alshon over Amini (not even hindsight on this one, this was a no brainer that should've been made)

2013: No Amini so...

Kyle Long over Star

2014: I'd keep Benjiman considering that's one of the guys I wanted but...

Allen Robinson over Kony Ealy

I kept Kuechly and KK as well so i'd be address both sides of the ball, trying to keep this realistic. Alshon and Benji on the outsides while Robinson worked the slot and could step in on the outsides as well. Pretty much set at WR for the foreseeable future.

The middle on the OL would then be Long, Kalil and Turner, pretty solid. We would've saved some money on Cotchery, Avant and Underwood. Bell could've stay at RT for now and that would still obviously leave us with an opening at LT. But with money saved and remaining cap space I think we could've had Collins.

Before I switch over to airplane mode, I thought I'd mention this little nugget. Did anybody hear Clinton Portis on WFNZ Primetime yesterday? He is a great listen and is a weekly guest with Moose on Kroeger's show. He seems to think Cam will test the free agent market because of the state of our franchise. Mentioned St Louis/L.A. Rams as a great fit. Discuss.

If he doesn't want to be here fug him.  We'd survive.  It would suck, but we'd survive.  Might actually be a better football team.  More money to shore up all our other weaknesses.  TBH, if DA was our starter we could get him some weapons and fix our defense.  Not saying that I want that to happen.  Just that Cam is going to want a lot of money.

Why shouldn't he?

Gettleman has not taken care of business with him in an extension

He watches Dalton, kapernick, etc get paid more than they worth while he carries a tine with an oline that could not displace many college oline sand rbs that could not fall forward for a yard.

Now Cam go win

What planet do you live on?

Gettleman picked up the fifth year option which almost every first round player in that draft got to. The reason dalton and Kaep didn't is because they were taken in the second round. Gettleman has been clearly space for cam.

I don't think you actually know what you are talking about here

Everyone wanted Star that draft.  I bet you did too.

Miss Cleo would make a great GM. Getting KB alone (a top 10 or even top 5 pick in a draft redo), is worth our entire 2014 draft plus our 2015 first rounder, according to the trade chart. If it makes you sleep better.

Annnnnnnnd this is why it's pointless to give names when someone asks you to give names.

I'm a huge fan of Newton and think that the way we've "built" around our franchise QB has been a bad fuging joke.

That said, the more this season plays out, the less comfortable I am giving big-ass money to a QB. As a team, we want to focus on good defense and grinding the clock on O with a strong running game, rule changes be damned. Our coaching staff and gameplan reflects this. We really don't need a top-tier QB for what our coaching staff wants to do. So there's that. We also have so many holes on what is supposed to be the strongest side of the ball. We're going to have to throw some high draft picks/FA money at the D (again) because it won't matter how good the O is if we're giving up 25+ a game. We extend Newton and throw a bunch of money towards his contract (which he's more than earned), it's still going to be a couple of years before we really get on track as a team with all the plugging we have to do. Oh and we need almost an entire OL, and another WR or two.

tl;dr I don't know if we need Cam to play Shula-ball and we having gaping fuging holes all over so I also don't know if we should pay out a ton of money when we're not going anywhere for a while anyhow don't need a Ferrari when the playbook is a go-cart track fug this season.

Not saying it will.

I highly doubt it ever comes to that.

It is so highly amazingly unlikely to ever come to that.

But it is very likely that they use the prospect of the tag as leverage that results in a deal to prevent it from occurring.

See what I did there?

No one that plays like Cam plays should ever be in favor of the tag much less playing under it for 2 friggin years.

One potential sticking point: The team might want him to sign a contract structured like the one for Kaepernick and one other QB (whose name escapes me) whereas Newton has been said to be resistant to the idea of such a deal.

To tell you the truth, I think that's the wave of the future when it comes to quarterback contracts.  Too many guarenteed 'big money' deals have produced less than spectacular results.

3 more seasons

2015- 5th year option

2016- franchise tag #1

2017- franchise tag #2

Cam doesn't have any say whatsoever in where he plays until the summer of 2018 when he's 29 years old, at the very earliest. I doubt Cam wants to play on essentially 1-year contracts for 3 more years. He'll get a new deal after this season.

I don't know why you keep throwing this idea around like it actually has a chance of working.

Other teams desperate for a QB will throw a kings ransom at a guy of his caliber. One team can try and bully a player into that type of contract, but they will look like fools when another team comes in and takes that player out from under them while the former team gets nothing in return.

Unless a player is willing to make that sacrifice himself, contracts like Kaepernicks will never become the standard.
