McCoy was never a star anywhere.

in the last 50 years, only 4 players have had their numbers retired by Texas:

-Earl Campbell (#20): won Heisman, Chic Harley, SN Player of the Year

-Ricky Williams (#34): won Heisman, Maxwell, Walter Camp, Chic Harley, SN Player of the Year, Doak Walker (twice), Jim Brown (twice)

-Vince Young (#10): Heisman Runner-up, won Maxwell, Archie Griffin, Davey O'Brien, Manning

-Colt McCoy (#12): Heisman Runner-up, won Maxwell, Walter Camp (twice), Chic Harley, Archie Griffin, SN Player of the Year, Davey O'Brien, Manning, Johnny Unitas

And only 2, and some could argue only 1 was productive in the NFL

of the 3 drafted top 5 overall, all 3 at least made one Pro Bowl:

#1 overall Earl Campbell (NFL Hall of Fame)

#3 overall Vince Young (Pro Bowl 2006 and 2009)

#5 overall Ricky Williams (2002 1st Team All-Pro, 2002 Pro Bowl)

as for Colt McCoy, he was drafted #85 overall. What's interesting is that if you look at all the college QBs that won major national awards that weren't drafted in the 1st Round, NONE of them turned out to be good NFL QBs, and Colt McCoy is no exception (76.1 rating, 6-15 record in NFL). The only exception is Drew Brees, but he was basically a 1st Round pick as he was drafted #32 overall (there were no Houston Texans back then, so there was only 31 teams at the time, which put #32 in the 2nd Round)

look at all the other major national award winning college QBs that weren't drafted 1st Round, and NONE of them turned out to be good NFL QBs....

Heisman-winning QBs not drafted in 1st Round:

#40 overall Pat Sullivan - 36.5 rating, 0-5 record in NFL

#95 overall Eric Crouch - DNP in NFL

#106 overall Chris Weinke - 62.2 rating, 2-18 record in NFL

#174 overall Troy Smith - 78.5 rating, 4-4 record in NFL

#192 overall Gino Torretta - 35.4 rating, 0 starts in NFL

#230 overall Ty Detmer - 74.7 rating, 11-14 record in NFL

#285 overall Doug Flutie - 76.3 rating, 38-28 record in NFL

undrafted Jason White - DNP in NFL

the other major national award winning college QBs not taken in 1st Round:

#32 overall Drew Brees

(3rd and 4th in Heisman voting, won Maxwell)

only 31 teams that year because Texans hadn't joined the NFL yet

#44 overall Pat White - 39.6 rating, 0 starts in NFL

(6th and 7th in Heisman voting, won Archie Griffin, 34-8 record as WVU starting QB)

#102 Casey Weldon - 57.4 rating, 0 starts in NFL

#133 overall Chuck Fusina - 60.4 rating, 0 starts in NFL

(Heisman Runner-up, won Maxwell, 29-3 record as Penn State starting QB, including an undefeated season)

#141 overall Rodney Peete - 73.3 rating, 45-42 record in NFL

(Heisman Runner-up, won Johnny Unitas, was #1 in Southern Cal history with 8,640 career yds of total offense)

#149 overall Don McPherson - DNP in NFL

(Heisman Runner-up, won Maxwell, Davey O'Brien, Johnny Unitas, Sammy Baugh, his #9 jersey was retired by Syracuse)

#177 overall Josh Heupel - DNP in NFL

(Heisman Runner-up, won Walter Camp, Archie Griffin, Chic Harley, AP Player of the Year, 20-5 record as Oklahoma starting QB, including a national championship)

#227 overall Michael Bishop - 64.4 rating, 0 starts in NFL

(Heisman Runner-up, won Davey O'Brien, 22-3 record as Kansas State starting QB)

#234 overall Joe Hamilton - DNP in NFL

(Heisman Runner-up, won Davey O'Brien, finished #1 in ACC history in career yards of total offense, total career touchdowns, career TD passes and career passer rating)

#241 overall Ken Dorsey - 55.2 rating, 2-11 record in NFL

(3rd and 5th in Heisman voting, won Archie Griffin twice, Chic Harley twice, 38-2 record as Miami's starting QB, including a national championship)

undrafted Graham Harrell - 64.6 rating, 0 starts in NFL

(4th in Heisman voting, SN Player of the Year, won Johnny Unitas, Sammy Baugh, the first NCAA player to post multiple 5,000-yard passing seasons, his last year he led Texas Tech to their legendary upset of #1/#1 Texas, Texas Tech finished the regular season 11-1 and ranked #8/8, his WR was Michael Crabtree, who won back-to-back Biletnikoff Awards as the nation's best WR with Harrell as his QB)

The original list was Colt McCoy, Ricky Williams, Vince Young, Earl Campbell.

Earl Campbell is HoF, enough said. He is the one that I said was guaranteed out of the four that was productive.

Vince Young hasnt been a starter of a team since 2010. 46 TD 51 INT 8,964 Yards throwing. 4 years in Tennessee and 1 in Philly as a backup. Worth being the #3 pick? Productive career?

Ricky Williams is the one that some could arguee that was the 2nd one. 10 years in the leaugue (not consecutive and not counting CFL). 10,000 rushing yards, 66 rushing TD, and a 4.1 YPC avg. I would say he was worth where he was picked and if he didnt leave the leauge like he did at the time he could have done even more (leaving could have been why he was so productive at the end of the career as well)

Colt McCoy granted he was a 3rd round draft pick, is just not good. 4,529 yards 22 TD 20 INT 58.9% completion.

I mentioned this because you quoted someone saying Colt was never a star, you said only 4 players in Texas History has had their jerseys retired. Of those 4 only 2 had a respectable NFL career.

I'm a Hokie fan but we have had Bruce Smith (HoF), Michael Vick(Hated by many, but has lasted almost 10 years in the league), Frank Beamer (2nd longest active HC in NCAA FB, turned the program from nothing to something), Jake Grove ( Great center for us in college, so-so nfl career), Cornell Brown (Backup for Ravens number of years and won a super bowl, coaching on Techs staff now), Corey Moore (defensive player of the year in college, never lasted in leauge after two seasons). Each school has their "stars" but that doesnt translate to national standards etc.

you aren't following the conversation. The writer for SI said that would be cool to see "McCoy, a star at the University of TEXAS, taking his shot on Monday Night Football in TEXAS" vs the TEXAS-based Dallas Cowboys, whose fanbase has a lot of TEXAS fans.

in college, McCoy was a nationally-known Super Star for the university of TEXAS, where he is revered by fans of the university of TEXAS for how great he was at the university of TEXAS

yes, McCoy sucks balls as an NFL QB and is a third-string QB only playing until RG3 gets back because the #2 QB, Kirk Cousins, turned out to be a turnover machine who is #1 in the NFL in turnovers

RG3 will be back next week, so this is McCoy's one time to get to start in one more NFL game, and it is on MNF vs. the #1 team in the NFC in TEXAS where he was one of their biggest college Super Stars of all-time for TEXAS' flagship school and football program, the university of TEXAS

It's basically a Rudy story, a 3rd string NFL scrub gets one shot on the biggest stage in TEXAS on MNF where he was one of the university of TEXAS' Biggest Stars of All-Time

Even if McCoy has his Rudy moment and leads the lowly Redskins to a win over the #1 team in the NFC in TEXAS, he still isn't going to play next week when RG3 is back, just like Rudy never played again after his Rudy moment

ESPN:

-Colt McCoy set a Washington franchise record by completing 83.3% of his passes Monday night

-3 QB have thrown at least 30 passes in a game this season, completed 83% or better Tom Brady Drew Brees and Colt McCoy

-McCoy has completed 86 percent of his passes over the past two weeks. That’s the best completion percentage in the league in that brief span. Highest Completion Percentage NFL QB over the last two weeks Colt McCoy 85.7% Peyton Manning 77.0% Aaron Rodgers 77.0%

-Redskins: 1st division win since 2012; Win snaps 8-game losing streak against division opponents (longest active streak in NFL)

-McCoy completed 25 of 30 passes for 299 yards and ran for his 2nd career rushing touchdown. McCoy went 5-for-5 for 49 yards in overtime and led the Redskins to the go-ahead field goal.

    • I'd rather figure out a way to get Howell from Seattle.  I think he would do really well in Canales offense.  I also think Howell would do great with this offensive line. Thoughts?
    • 30 points a game. People were hoping to get 17-21 with Young at Qb. This week will be a tougher defense sure would be nice to eat off their plate.
