Colt McCoy named new Redskins starting QB

Of all active quarterbacks with at least 20 starts, Colt McCoy has the third-lowest winning percentage. McCoy hasn't started a game since Week 14 of 2011 when he was with the Browns.

McCoy came in for struggling Kirk Cousins last game and completed 11 of 12 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown, driving the Redskins for the last-second, game-winning field goal.

RG3 is expected back soon

Redskins coach Jay Gruden told reporters today that McCoy -- fresh off his successful relief performance in the second half of Sunday's win against the Tennessee Titans -- will get the start against the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football

"Moving forward for the Cowboys, we're going to start with Colt. Kirk's gonna get the reps that he gets and he'll be ready to go in if need be. But Colt will be the starter, I'm planning on Monday night."

Colt McCoy will become the 29th starting QB for the Redskins in the last 29 years since Joe Theismann

(Theismann is one of only 37 players to be inducted into the Redskins Ring of Fame, he was the Redskins starting QB from 1978-1985, the 1983 NFL MVP, threw for 2 TDs in the Redskins 27-17 upset of Don Shula's Dolphins in Super Bowl XVII, etc)

Jay Gruden on Colt McCoy:

“He has got the intangibles to be a good quarterback. ... I’ve always liked his demeanor. ... He is very poised. He is a great competitor. I feel like he is going to get us in the right play and make the right throw. ... He will have a great opportunity Monday night, that’s for sure.”

from a Redskins forum:

I still like Cousins compared to Colt McCoy. I don't think the skins will win either way, so at least he's amusing and will throw the ball downfield with reckless abandon. Plus his performances make this board hilarious to read.

Colts got the arm of chad Pennington, may very well have subterranean hamster blood in his ancestry, and lacks moxie. Plus his professed Christianity makes him a target for satan.

Not a fan.

Sports Illustrated:

Even if Robert Griffin III is healthy enough to rejoin the lineup this week, I'm begging you, Redskins, let Colt McCoy make the start in Dallas. This franchise has not enjoyed many feel-good stories over the past few seasons. McCoy, a star at the University of Texas, taking his shot on Monday night in Texas would qualify as one.

    • I like that a lot; Ware from Troy and also Khalil Mack who played at University of Buffalo
    • I remember the Huddle consensus over the course of last season and the previous one. Lots of Bryce is a bust, we should've drafted a 4th slot WR, should've kept Wilks, should've kept an armless Cam, etc etc. So... yea... already thought about that. I wouldn't trust the Huddle to detail my car, let alone run a multi-billion dollar professional sports team. 😛
    • bold prediction, I think Mike Green will be the best pass rusher in this class, and thats even with abdul carter.  He reminds me of demarcus ware, not just in size and prowess, but even coming from a Sunbelt school (Ware from Troy, Green from Marshall).  I think he is passionate about the sport where I think Carter as the physical freak might not have the heart.  Thats the guy Im sold on and am gonna hammer the table for, I know he's not projected 8, but he is projected like 12-13, so if a slide back can happen and we still get the guy I want, I'm 100% on board. All that said, it takes 2 to tango, I think the Cowboys are the tango-er.  IMO theres a VERY good shot that Jeanty is available at 8.  Why does that matter?  Not only do the cowboys NEED a runningback (dak sucks without a run game), but MORE importantly, gee where did Jeanty play in high school.....Frisco TX, literally Dallas Metro.  Soo, RB is a position of need and the best RB and most blue chip draft selection that  could improve the offense immensly played IN dallas metro AND will be in range for them to move up and pick?  Do ya think Jerry Jones is gonna just say no to the Jersey Sales?  Jerry might have sexually assaulted a woman and attempted to prevent black people from going to school, but he's no idiot (he is).  IMO, we get a good enough package, prlly their first and third,  maybe a conditional later and we move to 12.  We get Green, they get Jeanty, everbuddy happy.
