The Traditional QB Still Rules the League

There's no question our O-line is bad

Peyton's Oline is far superior.

Rivers Oline is far superior.

Bradys Oline is better

Brees Oline is better

Rodgers Oline even patched up was far superior.

Lucks Oline is tremendous

Russell Wilson Oline is waaayyy better.

Kapernicks Oline is the exact opposite of our Oline (thats a good thing for them)

If Cam has SF O line we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

Taking away the garbage time/game over runs by Stewart .. we had no running game.

It all comes back to the line.  Cam is fine when he has a clean pocket,  although yesterday he was a bit off with the high throws (first time this year).

Also again I want to reiterate that Cam has shown he can throw from the pocket.  I've seen one pass in particular, during the Ravens game, that the phrase "thread the needle" wouldn't give it proper justice.  The problem is he is yet to make that his signature.  He's still developing etc.  That concerns me if we are going to give him all that money.  Now look at all the top teams right now....

Broncos

Patriots

Packers

Lions

Cardinals

Cowboys

Chargers

Ravens

Colts

49ers

Eagles

Most of these teams field a guy who's specialty is passing the ball.  Then you look at teams who are always in the mix....

Broncos

Patriots

Packers

Steelers

Saints

Giants

Eagles

49ers

Seahawks

Colts

Again, guys who specialize in the passing game.  Some of them have some athleticism, but you will never hear them talking about read options or design runs.  Cam still lean on these things, and it's still a question if he will eventually be known more for his passing than his running.

Everyone of those teams except the Giants have a waaaaayyyyyyy better Oline than we have.   Our pockets disentergrate regularly.

I'm open to the idea of trading Cam at the end of the season for a bunch of picks.

Then we can use these picks to draft some traditional qb to rule the league.

Glad you are not Gman and you have to watch Cam throwing for Panthers for another 8 years.

Seriously, I like pocket passers, but we can only play with the cards on our hands, it's not a sure thing that we will have an elite pocket passer in the following draft and Cam is good enough to win games for us if we really build around him.

I'm not attacking Cam necessarily (as far as blaming him for our losses or anything like that), I'm just saying the winning formula still seems to be the the QB who dissects defenses with his arm. Cam can do that, but it's not what he's known for. He's still more used to running with the ball. I go back to something I believe Avant said during preseason. People were getting on Avant and Cotchery for not showing up in the first couple of games. Said they weren't getting open for Cam to get them the ball. Avant stated that they were getting open. Then I go back to Derek Anderson's play in the first game against the Bucs. We all know Anderson doesn't have the legs to run like Cam, so he primarily relies on throwing the ball. With pretty much the same O-line, Anderson had success. Yes, it was against the Bucs, but they are a pro team. I wish I could see Anderson back out there, and see what he could do now, so I could adequately compare someone who primarily depends on throwing the ball versus Cam who also can lean on his legs to get yards.

I'm sorry guys but I can't just blindly say give Cam the mega deal, if he's still learning and developing. Even with all the skills he has.

Anderson was a dropped interception away from losing the bucs. Still he is your answer just because Peyton is great from the pocket?

And by the way, Smith is making $15m a year to game manage from the pocket. So it is like a decent CB between him and Cam in terms of cap hit after Cam is payed.

Even if your plan work's and we somehow find a Alex Smith caliber guy in the third. And he plays well from the start. In year three he is a QB on a winning team and will demand his payday.

This thread is very strange.

Cam is a franchise QB, and will sign an extension here, as he should.

That said, I can argue against signing any QB to take up that much cap space.  It makes it awfully hard to surround them with enough talent to win the big ones.

I've watched the Broncos, Patriots, Colts, etc continue to compete at the top of the league year in and year out.  They have franchise QBs, but what is special about them is their best talent is picking apart defenses with their arm.  Sitting back, manipulating DBs, and picking them apart.  They also know how to move within the pocket, as to avoid good pass rushers.  My biggest fear with Cam is that he will never fully learn how to do this.  That he either leans more toward his athletic side, or is pressured by everyone (media and fans alike) to be the QB who throws for 200 and run for 100.  I'm tired of this crap because it is the traditional pocket passer that competes year in and year out.  Vick had his moments, but his team never competed every year.

I'm being real.  I love Cam as much as anyone else.  I also know he can throw the ball.  Yet I don't think he will ever become a franchise pocket passer.  Have yall seen the 360 he did today in the pocket, running slam into a defender for the team's first sack?  I just don't know if I want to invest 160 million into one guy, if this is what I should expect for the rest of his career.  In any case, I want a traditional guy back there.  The primarily athletic QB still hasn't come in and changed the game just yet.  I'm open to the idea of trading Cam at the end of the season for a bunch of picks.

Oh? And remind me which team won the superbowl against last season?

Cam IS the team, he is the least of our worries.

I know this thread is a joke when you got dudes posting 3 times in a row bumping it up without replying to anyone else.

If Cam is not a pocket QB then I do not know who is...  He throws from the pocket but he has wheels to move it if he wants to - but make no mistake he's a pocket QB.  The problems he is having are due to the OL and due to his limitations.  What many of the real football folks realize is that Newton is struggling because he is not progressing to a next level yet to be making the reads necessary or put the ball where it needs to be like he should.  If the last couple seasons hold true as evidence then around about this week or next he will bust out and get to that next level.
