Can we ever become a great team with Rivera at the helm

Nope. We are still seeing him make rookie mistakes time and time again. Also, he has had 4 years to draft his personnel (he has had a good amount of say in drafts), get the players he wants to fit his system, and deliver his product. Well, he has had one good season (early playoff exit) and what looks to be 3 duds. That, my firends, is not a coach trending up.

You're entitled to you opinion brother. Just asking a question. Not sure at this moment if I am positive on anything about this team except that I am confused as hell about the defense's apparent lack of even minimal performance/effort.

I have a theory but just don't want to believe it.

Carry on.

I can live with that...and I have a notion at what your theory is, problably the same as mine.

I honestly don't think so.

Ron has no identity. He tries to be "Mr. Tough Guy" coach, but softens up to certain players (for example, being so hard on White when he stumbled and interfered with Smitty in a blow out), and then he tries to be "Mr. Players' Coach", and yet, doesn't stand up for his players, instead, falling in line with the company motto.

Rivera is a puppet.

Yes, but he just like every coach needs talent. We have a quarter of our cap in 3 player that have done nothing and are in the past. Until we expelle the bad the good will not come. Hurney and JR were two people who were bad for each other. Two people who left us with little talent and little cap room.

But isn't it a coaches job to put his players in a position to be successful? I could've sworn it was a coach job to demand the best and get the best performances out of his players no matter who it is each and every Sunday. If Rivera can't do those two, he is not fulfilling his job duties point blank. Rivera is suppose to be able to hang his hat on his defense. He can't even do that anymore with the ridiculous drop off and the huge big plays we have given up this season. So the question I ask you is what value is he adding to our team?

All I know is I had no faith in Ron Rivera.  I went to the Giants game last year expecting to lose and see RR fired immediately after.  Then... we blew them out of the water with a shutout.  It was the birth of a new coach called Riverboat Ron.  He then went on to be one of the best coaches in the league and would have gone to the NFC championship game had it not been for the worst reffing of all time and the Caperpricks!!!!  (I really haven't let that one go yet have I?)

Then... he got a contract extension and **poof** riverboat up and died and vanished like a fart in the wind and in walked the guy we had hoped we would never see again.. Ron "Punt" Rivera, aka Ron "3rd and 10 Draw up the middle" Rivera, aka Ron the Con, aka you get the picture he sucks!

The problem is Jerry Richardson, and was Marty Hurney. It is not Ron Rivera. And can't be DG (he's still living under Hurney's mess).

Anyone watching the Broncos/49ers game? The announcers talked about how after they got their ass spanked in the SB, Fox and Elway got together to make changes and to make the team better. Guess what? THEY MADE THE CHANGES. Instead of saying, "We were just in the SB, we're RIGHT THERE, we are fine," they said, "We're not fine. Not even close. We're not ready to win a SB." Some things they did: sign DeMarcus Ware, sign Aqib Talib, sign Emanuel Sanders, etc.

Where do we hear "we're fine"? On this board every pre-season, lol.

I know we have money issues. But when they are gone, will DG, JR, and their lackey Rivera still make the same mistakes? Overpay guys who ... oh I don't know, had 10-12 sacks that previous season? And when they do overpay him, he doesn't see that number ever again? Will they continue to be stubborn and try to force the team into a certain mold they think it SHOULD be? Or will they look at themselves in the mirror and at the team the HAVE honestly, and realize the Panthers have NEVER been elite. Ever. EVER. NO back to back winning seasons? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Yes, Cam isn't Peyton Manning and never will be. But what happens when we pay all of our money to Cam, Keek, CJ, Kalil, and eventually KB, etc.? What happens is: we'll be forced to put avg talent around that pricey bunch.

JR is a great man. GREAT. He brought the NFL to Charlotte. But I'm sorry, he is a terrible football owner. His core philosophy is very outdated and though I have no proof of it, I'd bet GOOD MONEY he has his voice in DG's and RR's ears all the time.

Until JR is no longer the owner, until all of Hurney's mistakes are over and done with, and until we let Cam be Cam and stop trying to turn him into a pocket passer ... this team will continue to have one miracle season in a bunch of three lousy or avg ones.

We are not the Bronocs, we are not the Patriots, we are not the Colts, we are not Green Bay. Ask any fan in another part of the country how they see the Carolina Panthers and I bet you they see us how we see a team like the Titans.

Do you, Panthers fans, ever expect anything from the Titans? Of course not. Well, the NFL world expects nothing from us. So ... what are we going to do to change that?

By the way you answered, I can guarantee you that it is.

Immediate reinstatement is the only way the team buys in.  And even then the damage is done.  I think even Luke is pissed along with TD and Big Money.

If the Rice video would have been released when Roger got it and appropriate action taken, we would not be here lobbing messages back and forth.

Hardy should be on the field and Roger should be fired and at a Senate Committee hearing tomorrow.

Oh well, how did the Hornets do tonight?  :)

I can't place all the blame on Rivera, so I think its unfair to pass judgement at this point. A big part of the issue is Shula and the offense that he runs. It's simple, boring, predictable. I'd get rid of Shula before Rivera.

Another big part of issues are the men on the roster. Panthers are handcuffed with the amount of big money tied up and horrible draft mistakes from Hurney. Take a look at the elite teams in this league and look at their cap management. They spend smart and have enough cap room to go out and sign key FAs and make runs at guys without sacrificing other areas of their team.

I'm sorry but no coach you bring in can be great with this team and where the organization is right now. Its going to be 2-3 years before we will actually get to enjoy a winning team year in and year out. Get out of this cap hell and build through the draft. We already have key players on this roster to build around. You just can't keep building around them by taking 1 year fliers on washed up veterans hoping to find the fountain of youth.

Yes.  Rivera is not the problem

this is the first year we have seemingly gone backwards since he has been here and the season isn't even over yet

Fans always act like the magic super coach is just waiting in the wings and he is going to win 13 games every year just because of his awesomeness as a coach and will fix everything.

I'm sure the Browns felt that way too when they fired Belichick.

Tis game is about 60% talent, 20% confidence, and only about 20% coaching

PS-  I am not saying Rivera is Belichick, just talking about the mentality of most fans when their teams aren't winning 90% of their games every year

We haven't became a great team yet so probably no. This team is still making mistakes that we seen from them in Riverboat Ron first season. Only this time we are getting blown out and teams are dropping damn near 40 on us a game.

The seahawks are making a lot of mistakes and they won the superbowl last year...

The coach is not a problem anymore than any other coach is. Last year had as much to do with coaching as anything.

This is just another thread in a long line of threads being dramatic pointing the finger at every single thing possible.

"ITS CAM...ITS GETTLEMEN..NO ITS RONS FAULT...ITS THE O-LINE(somewhat true)..ITS ITS...EVERY THING!!"

No...it's the defense. bottom line. any other thread is stupid and overemotional.

The difference is the Seahawks are going to get everybody the play best punch just because they are the defending Super Bowl champs. The Panthers have yet to win squat in the Riverboat Ron era. Right now this team needs to get something going if they want to have any shot at competing in the playoffs. We have to get better and be more discipline as a team because if not we are going to keep seeing a trend of us getting beating on.

The problem I have with Ron Rivera is, he's supposed to be a defensive coach.  He showed us that last season that he is capable of creating a top-tier defense from scratch.  But right now the defense is straight up losing the Panthers games.  If he can't turn it around and the Panthers defense is what costs them a chance at the playoffs (in a ridiculously down year in the NFC South), despite having a legit franchise QB and the reigning defensive player of the year on defense, serious thought should be put into firing Rivera at the end of the season.  Real talk.
