What has impressed me the most about Gettleman isn't what he has done,  its what he hasn't.  He hasn't mortgaged our future for short term success.  He isn't one of those GMs always looking to make a "splash".  Those teams tend to do poorly.

 

 

I would modify that somewhat.  Gettleman is responsible for building a team that has the ability to have sustained success over an extended period of time. 

 

People around here seem to forgot how bad of a situation he walked into.  I don't really think a lot of people understand how bad of a situation the cap was in.  Its one thing to have players making too much its another to have contracts that you can't get out from.  Honestly I think he would have cut more players if was financially feasible.

 

Even if you are one of those who don't understand or believe in a cap the actual product on the field was terrible.  If I remember correctly we hadn't had a winning season in 4 years. 

 

 

He is rebuilding.  We just happened to go 12-4 in the middle of it and it distorted a lot of people reality of where this franchise was at. 

 

Look at the moves he has made.  Every offseason he has got rid of a few bad contracts.  All of his additions have been cheap short term acquisitions. 

 

If you were to take a snapshot of the top 10 salaries on the roster when he arrived and compare them to 2016 I would bet they will be very different.  That is a rebuild. 

 

Do I think he is one of the best GMs in the league?  Its too early to tell. 

We have only had 2 drafts?  So far I would say the drafts are above average, but it is still early to say for sure.

We've seen him cull bad contracts.

We've seen him fill holes with cheap players.  Some have worked.  Some have not.  That is why they were cheap to start with.

We have yet to see how he handles paying the expensive players.  The next 2-3 years will tell us that.

 

Personally I like his approach so far, but in reality only time will tell.

Harper's old and slow, and he's been beat pretty bad on some memorable plays so far

Decoud is alright, but not terrible

Dickson hasn't really had an opportunity with him being a backup and our OL not giving Cam enough time

Cotchery is kind of in the same boat as Dickson.. If your name isn't Kelvin or Greg, then you aren't getting the targets in this offense so far

Avant has made some good, drive-extending grabs, but see the two above

Cason has admittedly been pretty remarkably terrible in recent memory, but he had a decent start to the season IIRC.

We don't suck. We play poorly sometimes because a combination of a lot of things. Players get hurt, players get out of position. Bad plays are called. Bad reads are made. There's another team across the line of scrimmage trying just as hard as we are to win, and sometimes they are going to execute better than we do.

 

We have talented players. I don't think many people believed we upgraded so much as did a little addition by subtraction.

 

If we lose to SEA and NO, it won't be any one person's fault.

Gettleman has two Super Bowl rings that say he's got the ability to do something right.
