Possibly but more likely is trying to get team to better place for future more than just 2014 by not making it rain on big multi year contracts

 

Yup still dealing with Hurney's BS and GMan has shown that he can actually draft outside of the first round unlike Marty.

 

So eventually we'll have that first round talent hit and some depth....it hasn't been 2 full years yet and we still have fools talking like Hurney's mess is cleaned up.

This. Can't always blame coaches when the players are constantly out of position, getting blown up at the LoS, etc. They have to do their part as well. There's not a team in the NFL that has superstars at more than a few positions. The average have to at least be where they're supposed to.

Most of the people bitching about DG have absolutely no idea what a salary cap is, and how bad off ours is. What kind of moron thinks he wouldn't get better players if he could? It makes zero sense. $133 million and 53 guys. Do the math, it's a little over $2.5 million per player average. Now go look up our current contracts(of which zero of the big ones are on DG, aside from the franchise tag, and nobody saw that situation coming) and make a valid argument... you can't.

Not entirely, but you also can't make chicken salad out of chicken poo. That's what Gettleman had a boatload of when he got here. Not many, if any, GMs could have done much better.

This is based on the current league salary cap. If the cap goes up you can adjust accordingly (which it should).

Absolutely, but it's nothing to do with Smitty. That move ended up being okay. The real l problem is on the OL and secondary where he was able to fill holes with cheap FAs last year, thinking it would pan out again this year. It didn't. Hardy's gone, the secondary is exposed. OL is nonexistent, the backfield is injured, there is no rushing attack. Yes, we're low on money but bringing back guys like Florence, Wharton, and Gross would have been a good idea. I know they retired but I think they would have stuck around if DG didn't have such a deadpan style of doing things. Even if they we're gonna retire, there were several vets we could afford. Yes, you've gotta stay business minded but you have to stay with what works if you can't get better replacements. I get he's rebuilding but old guys are fine to keep in positions that you can't afford to replace that season

DG has handled the Panthers since he came into control about as well as I think he could have.  He has an eye for talent, and seems to have a vision for this team, instead of play wack-a-mole.

 

 

He said the pain was going to be around for a couple years, and it has, and it will.  We will be in better shape next season, and even better the year after that.

This team was EXTREMELY lucky to have been as successful as they were last year - and a lot of those wins were close, meaning we were always likely to regress back to the mean sooner rather than later. What Gettleman did with that atrocious salary cap last year and a bunch of bargain bin free agents in the secondary was nothing short of amazing. It was the perfect storm of cheap & productive talent, a schedule that broke our way and luck.

 

This isn't anyone's fault except Jerry Richardson for stubbornly leaving Hurney in place long enough for him to completely sabotage this team's future with poor constructed contracts. You don't think Gettleman would like a little cash to spend on the DBs and Oline? Don't forget he tried to sign away Cincinnati's RT but didn't have the capital. Last year was by far our best chance for a title. It's going to be much more difficult from here on out - even after we clear the cap situation up.
