Green Bay CBs: "Cam is special, Top 5 arm, can make all the passes"

cornerback Davon House praised Newton's ability arm repeatedly. He calls it a "top 5" arm in the NFL.

"Cam is special. He’s going to be good for a while in this league.”

“There are some quarterbacks that don’t have as good of an arm as him or aren’t QB savvy enough where they would look to throw the ball," House said. "Not going to say any quarterbacks’ names but a good quarterback like Russell Wilson, he looks to throw the ball even though he can run it. He scrambles to throw the ball and so does Cam. And I would even say A-Rod. When he scrambles, he scrambles to throw the ball, not run it."

CB Casey Hayward:

"You have Cam Newton coming up. He's a dual-threat. He can run it. He can make all the passes...This defense is going to have to come ready to play"

Julius Peppers:

"It’s one thing to have pressure on him and get to the quarterback," outside linebacker Julius Peppers said.

"It’s a totally separate thing to get to him and bring him down. That’s where he’s different than a lot of other quarterbacks whereas it’s another tall task to take him down once you finally get to him.”

Peppers does miss the days of the pocket passer.

“Yeah, a little bit. I do," Peppers said. "These guys run around now and you miss a lot more sacks. It’s just tougher to get there nowadays with all the zone read.

"It’s been evolving for the last five years or so. So it’s been going more and more in that direction with guys being able to do both. It’s just a part of the game that defenses and pass rushers are going to have to adjust to and adapt to because the game is changing. That’s where it’s headed.”

Is there any way I could find out stats on how many audibles each QB calls in each game? I was just thinking about it and I see Peyton Manning audible nearly every play, Brady does it every once in a while, Brees does it a fair amount, Rodgers a lot and then Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick I have never ever seen audible even once. Cam audibles a fair amount and it seems every time he does so he ends up getting a decent chunk of yards.

We discussed this on another thread but Cam doesn't have time to audible a whole lot because by the time we get lined up there are only 5 or 6 seconds left on the play clock.  The guys who audible are getting lined up with ten second or more consistently.  I don't know if the problem is in the huddle or on the sidelines but we need to get Cam to the line of scrimmage sooner so he can make adjustments.  Right now, it seems like they are barely getting the called play off in time, much less do they have time to change anything.

Cam audibles a whole lot more than we realize.

Didn't you answer your question just there?

10 year quarterbacks are more able and trusted to read defences and call at the line then 4 year quarterbacks?

My question was the exact stats. My observations viewing that I listed after that aren't stats so no I didn't answer my own question there.

Obviously but my point is mainly comparing the younger QBs' audibles. I have never seen Russell Wilson or Colin Kaepernick call an audible, Luck calls some but not many, Griffin never did, Tannehill doesn't, none of the rookies do, Cam does actually a lot compared to all these others, from what I believe I've seen. I'm looking for stats to compare the younger QBs, it's obvious the veterans and elite QBs do it more than the young ones.

It would be very difficult to actually calculate because people like Peyton make obvious fake audibles to dupe defenses so it would be hard for an analyst to count how many times the audibles made at the line actually influence the play.

But there's definitely an element of trust from first the OCs to trust their QBs to make the read and the right call and secondly the player themselves to successfully communicate it to the offence.

You're right that one of the most impressive things about Cam is his ability to read defenses - this is clear with the decisions he makes on the read/option and its clear he can be trusted to call plays on the line too.

You would add those in, someone could watch all the game film and every time a QB changes something at the line or calls something out that isn't part of the snap count (and that can be obviously differentiated) then you call it an audible, and add them up. Wouldn't be an official stat but would be some kind of basis. I literally have not seen Wilson or Kaepernick ever change something at the line or even call out something different other than the play count.

Sometimes there is 2 or 3 play calls in the huddle. Once the offense sees the defense's alignment they'll check to one of the plays the called in the huddle. Although I do believe Cam is audibling to completely different plays now. He is becoming a complete QB
