I can live in Charlotte the rest of my life and be fine. There really is only two or 3 things I want that Charlotte doesn't have. I would like to live in a city with:

 

1. more outdoor adventures nearby, especially good skiing

2. a more progressive mentality

3. better schools. 

 

And #3 has us considering getting out of the state for real. If we moved into Dilworth or Downtown Charlotte number 2 would be mostly fulfilled. 

And number 1 I'd never move for but it would fuging rock.

Reading this thread, I find it interesting why some people choose to live in certain places.  Some of them I understand.  Better schools, better infrastructure, more and better paying jobs, lower cost of living, and better weather are things that might interest me.  Some of the other reasons are interesting.  For example, I don't really get why the beer in a certain area would be appealing, but to each his own I guess.

beer is a perk, not a reason (for me at least... don't wanna speak for everyone)

and when we have the breweries like we do up here, the experience is more than just beer. Pisgah has several sweet music venues as a part of their brewery with really good music rolling through and the new Sierra Nevada brewery is going to be crazy... they're on almost 200 acres with 90 acres of wooded area that will be filled with trails. they also own a good piece of French Broad River frontage that they're building a bar on so that you can float up to while tubing/kayaking/etc. and grab a beer

 

A lot of Asheville talk, but how on Earth do you make/afford a good living?

you move to the city the same way you do any other city, you go in with a plan... like I said before, both my wife and I took our jobs with us when we moved up here. if you show up in Asheville assuming that you'll find a job once you get here, you probably are in for a rude awakening (and are going to end up bussing tables and renting a bungalow out in West Asheville with 12 other hipsters doing the same thing)

of course, if you have built a career in the service industry, you're probably set. my wife has worked in the hotel industry for well over a decade and is soon going to have more options up here than she'll know what to do with (if she were to decide to leave her current job). the hotel boom up here is serious

of course, at the same time, you have to realize people up here are different... one of the main reasons I wanted out of Charlotte was because there were so many people there that were chasing money and trying to keep up with the Jones's. that is so far from the thought process for most people up here, it's INCREDIBLY refreshing. most people up here are willing to manage that Whole Foods on the corner or wait on tourists all day, make their money and live their lives.

I have had the great fortune of traveling quite a bit (every continent but Australia and Antarctica), and getting to live in some unique spots.  My favorite was probably Hawaii.  Being able to hit the Beach on New Years day was wonderful.  But its very expensive, and the main island (where the jobs are) is extremely crowded.  Traffic makes anything in NC seem easy by comparison. 

 

But in truth, I don't care so much where I live when I retire.  Just want decent weather, low cost of living, relatively low crime rate, and to be close to my family.  Which means I will probably stay here near Winston.

Hawaii is awesome. Spent eight days on Kauai once. And yeah, the price for milk was like ... whaaat?

 

 

Went ATVing there, it was a fuging blast. We spent two weeks in Hawaii right after the Panthers lost the superbowl, it was expensive as hell.
