I know the reason why Brooklyn Bully hates Charlotte...

Take it from someone who lives in the NY area, most of the smugness comes from the fact that there are so many self obsessed social climbing try-hards. At the opposite of that spectrum is Appalachia people who don't trust a convenience store clerk when they say "have a nice day now" (i.e. Venom). Show me a city where the people are grounded and invested in working together and being cooperative yet also have a sense of individuality and are not infatuated with fitting in and keeping up with the joneses and I'll gladly move there.

Boulder, CO? Some hippy commune in the 60s?

Huh? I'd never bag on NYC. My point is, that there is more to a good city than having stuff to do. So if someone doesn't like Charlotte, there could be many reasons, not that they have a boring social life as you have said twice now.

Jobs, schools, economy, weather, arts, culture, food, politics, LBGT friendly, location, etc. All of that goes into making a city good. But hey if you, PanthersBigD, would be the life of the party in an Amish area of PA and that's all you need to be happy ... cool for you?

Do you even Rumspringa, Brooklyn Bully...

I get that 'good time' oversimplifies things. My perspective on this is that you can find all those things in just about every city or town if you look hard enough. And what makes a city 'good' is extremely subjective.

I've spent Summers there working on church outreach programs. It was hot, sticky, and miserable. I like the snow and cool summers in Boone more.

Like you said, to each his own, I prefer to be on the mountain, not below them.

I'm not hating on people that live there, I just never would want to myself.

did you actually live in boone for an extended period?

i spent six years there during and after college and it got tiresome

Too small. Especially after you graduate and you feel old hanging around college kids getting shitfaced drunk.

Asheville is just right for me, right now. I'm planning a move in the next couple years though.

what people who didn't spend a good amount of time there tend to not realize, at least in my experience, is that during the summer when all the students go back home boone is really just like any other small town.  everything shuts down around 8-ish unless you were going to a bar or a house party.  it could be suffocating especially if you lived off campus.  it also seemed like the locals didn't particularly enjoy the university's presence in the community either.

i miss the hell out of the weather though.  i remember the day i went out to check out an apartment in chapel hill.  it was mid july and i think the forecast high in boone was like 80 with low humidity.  i had been in an air conditioned bubble for two hours when we pulled into the parking lot.  i stepped out of my car and was like "i can't believe how fuging hot it is here".
