Robert Downey Jr. signs on for Captain America 3

Apparently Robert Downey Jr. has signed on to play the 'villain' in this as they're going for a Civil War storyline with Cap vs. Iron-Man

Yes, please.  moe.gif

Also, this makes me wonder about the recent rumors about Marvel trying to do a deal with Sony to merge the Amazing Spider-Man franchise with the MCU. If they want to make this an even bigger deal that makes a lot of sense.

This makes a lot of sense for civil war sense the main part of that story was Captain America vs Iron Man. The cinematic universe doesn't have enough characters to pull it off on the scale that the comics did so it's just better off having a few people at the center of the story.

Interesting that they would take this story on as a Captain America movie as opposed to an Avengers movie...

Well there was a rumor floating around awhile back.

Supposedly at the end of Avengers 2 the Hulk is captured in some sort spacecraft getting shot into space.

Then they do Civil War in Captain America movie

Hulk gets standalone movie Planet Hulk (yes please)

Then Avengers 3 is World War Hulk

I didn't believe it because I didn't think Hollywood studios would have the balls to do the Civil War, a standalone Hulk movie, or Wold War Hulk.

If it is true that they are doing Civil War in Captain America movie and not Avengers, I'm starting to think that might be the direction they go.

I think Civil War will need to span more than a single movie... just too much to cover to throw it all into one film, even if expanded to 3 hours. I posted this in the other thread this morning

my take on everything moving forward...

I doubt RDJ becomes the "villain" in CA3... my guess would be that throughout the movie, while Cap is looking for Fury, Stark wildly disagrees with what he's doing. they butt heads throughout - somewhere in there Stark becomes head of SHIELD - which causes more issues between him and Cap. I would suspect that nothing about the registration comes forward until the very end

that will leave the registration to play out in a future movie 3-4 years down the road, which would sync up with the dates that Sony is possibly looking at to work out a deal with Marvel in bringing Spidey into the fold (since Sony is apparently doing a soft-reboot with Sinister Six - possibly sans Andrew Garfield - and if it flops, they'll definitely be more willing to lend him out)

I think Avengers 3 will actually be more like a New/Secret Avengers... lots of new players in regards to the roster that we're used to. Cap (v2.0?), Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, maybe Hawkeye and maybe Black Panther since a part of Age of Ultron takes place in Wakanda. this takes RDJ and Chris Hemsworth out of the equation as well as Chris Evans if he's already out of the picture and opens up all of those characters to another movie down the line (the assumption has been that Avengers 3 is the last - at this point - scheduled movie for most of these guys).

Civil War plays out through the ending of Cap 3 into Thor 3, IM 4 (it's happening) and spills into Avengers 3, which ends with Thanos showing up after seeing all the turmoil "Earth's Mightiest" have been putting themselves through - perfect opportunity for him to show up and do what he does - but with GotG hot on his heels leading into the Avengers/GotG crossover event.

as for Hulk... there's been speculation for a while now that he's sent off Earth in some sort of spaceship at the end of AoU. assuming that's definitely the case, I'm thinking we get our dosage of Hulk from the GotG movies for a while, he gets his own standalone film again to do Planet Hulk/WWH and then just happens to reappear on earth in the post Avengers 3/GotG 2 movie that is the Avengers/GotG vs. Thanos super event that brings back RDJ (once again as IM), Hemsworth and Evans back for a final(?) hurrah. Hulk shows up just in time to do some smashing. Cap1, IM(1?) and Thor pass the reigns off to Ant-Man, Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and whoever else possibly shows up between now and then to be the New Avengers moving forward and the next phase of Marvel movies kicks off... possibly heading in an Inhumans direction.

and hopefully fantastic four is left exactly where they are now... I feel like that's a dead franchise to Marvel... the book has been a dud for most of the past decade and is in need of major revamping... and that won't happen in the movies until it's done in the comics. those characters don't make sense in the MCU right now (or anywhere imo)

This was almost the same theory that we came up with. Except we decided that either the GOTG were in Planet Hulk, by Hulk's craft crashing into the Milano or they detect a terran on the planet and offer him a ride back to Earth. The other possibility is that Beta Ray Bill gives him a ride.

Now as to how he gets off Earth? Could be an accident or it could be The Collector.

Possibly, but by the time this is released we'll have the upcoming Netflix series released (including Daredevil) and likely several new heroes introduced via Agents of SHIELD. Not to mention the possibility Marve gets a deal done with Sony to use Spider-Man, which I think is a MUCH stronger possibility than many think. I don't think it's a coincidence that this news comes out mere weeks after the rumors about Marvel and Sony working on a deal to allow the Amazing Spider-Man franchise to be brought into the larger MCU.

At the very least it's being discussed very seriously. I think a deal gets done. Not that it has to. Spidey's role in the storyline could be switched to Thor or Daredevil or possibly even the Hulk - or they could just switch up the plot and remove it entirely - but there's a lot of sense in bringing Spider-Man into the MCU and Sony is struggling financially and the ASM franchise is kind of floundering after the lukewarm response to ASM 2. They actually stand to gain a lot more from that sort of deal than Marvel does.

I also think it's likely this story plays out over the entire 3rd phase of the MCU and that Cap 3 will be just the beginning.

at this point, I kinda expect Sony to receive a fat check from Marvel so that MCU can run the show and Sony continues to distribute the film.

    • I'd give it a C mainly because of Brooks.  If we just didn't have a 2nd I'd argue B to B+ tbh. Brooks was a bad gamble, tho one that could still pay off long term. Yes XL only has 400 yards but... Look who is throwing him the ball. And I think he isn't a "true #1" but he's been able to consistently get open. Hands definitely need to be cleaned up.  But he should end the year with 500-600 yards. Like you said - Sanders looks great.  Get him a better QB / more time with a QB and I think he's gonna impress. We added a couple rotational players on D that have both made plays and show promise for the future from later rounds. So I'd say, Brooks really hurts this drafts grade. It'll be interesting to see how it progresses over the next 3 years. I've overall really liked Morgan's FA acquisitions, so...
    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
    • We're in a great position to see just how big of a misstep it would be, having made so many ourselves
