Your 3 Players to Watch tonight ?

Chris Harris

Why Harris? Because I want to see another showdown between him and Jacobs. Plus his comments on the Packman show last week was that he was dying to play against another team and "just hit somebody". Love his atitude.

I am rooting for K Moore and Nicks, good to see locals balln. I wonder how much influence it has for Moore, the fact that Smitty decided to work with him in the offseason, as far as making the team. I was present at his last college game, and the boy is a football player.

Instead of individual players, I'm going to go with four situations/groups that I'll be looking at mostly. I'll be watching this game very differently from my typical Sunday, as many of you will too.

Fiammetta and Lloyd - The issue of keeping two fullbacks is a huge one. I don't see how we can keep two FBs and two kickers. I want to see how Fiammetta looks as a blocker and I hope (although unlikely) to see Lloyd have a go at a field goal. I love Kasay, and I know that Lloyd is a rough kicker to say the least, but he's been taking them in camp. The transition has to come soon for both Hoover/Fiammetta and Kasay/Lloyd. This is a year when we have enough young talent that it would be unfortunate to use up two roster spots to have two FBs and two kickers. I don't want to see Hoov go...

DTs - Obviously, we have to watch this one closely. Come to think of it, it should be readily apparent after the first two NY drives if we are in big trouble. As the game progresses, I'm looking for some of the young guys to hold their own against the NY backup O-line. If I see them getting pushed around badly by the second team, then this is a much bigger issue than some of us are worrying about now. Yeah, it's just one game, but the coaches need some answers quick so they can move on and aggressively pursue other talent if necessary.

The second line of backers - Connor, Anderson, Johnson. Lots of talent here for a backup group. I'll be looking to see Connor's vision; his attributes and talents are such a great fit for Meeks' style. I want to see Connor show that he's the next young backer to step up that first line. I want to see Anderson and Johnson show something that may be reminiscent of trade value.

The "will one of you please step the F up so we have a reliable third option and someone to eventually replace Moose" group - Enough said.

The other three big areas of interest are areas that I have much more confidence in and therefore won't spend as much time looking at them:

1) The RB situation: Goodson and Lee - I'd love to see Goodson show us something special, but I'm more interested in his potential as a return man.

2) The new secondary members: Captain and Martin - I'll be focusing on these guys heavily in the latter portion of the preseason, once they've acquired some game experience and have dissected some film. I'm pretty sure I'll need some time getting used to Meeks system before I can really evaluate these guys.

3) The ends: Johnson and Brown - I am a huge Charles Johnson fan, and want this guy to get his shot. But I also want to see if Everette gets manhandled or not. Regardless, I am not too concerned about the talent or capability of our ends to produce, so this won't be an area that I'm watching closely.

    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
