Cam v. Luck - The "Build Around" Philosophy

You don't need a Luck comparison to see that our FO has done a piss poor job building on offense through their draft the last several years.

Honestly there are simply too many front office cheerleaders here to have a real discussion about this anyway.

The "But Marty Hurney done stole our salary cap 3 years ago guys!" mantra we see parroted over and over has become more annoying than the "It is what it is" we heard for so many years from John Fox. Ironically, many people here routinely and blindly praised Hurney for his moves.

Also, as intelligent a man as Mr. Scot is, attempting to have a discussion with him about front office failures is entirely a waste of time.

I get it, but think how far away our defense was 3 seasons ago, and it was only slightly better the next season.

Our offense was looking pretty decent at that time too.

We had no choice but to build our defense. We had just come off a season scoring nearly 27 points a game and going 6-10 because of how bad our defense was

All I know is is would take the panthers talent over the colts. Team wise.

I said it before we have done more for this TEAM with draft picks than the colts have. That colts team is poo. Giving cam an elite defense, based on cams talent alone, than giving him a poo defense is doing him more favors short term as well as long term than what the colts are doing right now with luck. But that is just my opinion.

Exactly, when Cam meets Luck and our defense smacks him in the mouth like SEA did Peyton, Cam will be getting all the praise for winning one over Luck.

Weapons include vets and guys already here picked up by anyone. After all who you already have on the roster greatly influence who you pick up on both sides of the ball. I thought you were going to chime in with how much of a weapon that DeAngelo is to Cam.

Discussion was building around Cam. That means moves post Cam.

We have made one. Drafting KB.

There were about 8 balls Houston could of picked off last night.

If Cam would have played the exact same game the talk would have been different

And there lies the REAL difference between Cam and Luck.

What is even worst is, many Panthers fans will believe that Luck doesn't have enough weapons around him; while they will say what Cam has now is fine because he's talented enough to make up for the team's weaknesses.

Cam gets the, work him until he drops attitude. But Luck gets the, we must do everything we can to not burn him out attitude.

Building around him includes guys you keep as your core as well as those you add. Because you build differently if you have lots of good pieces already versus building it from the ground up.

It's pretty much impossible to have a conversation about which franchise is making better personnel decisions. Let's start with the obvious, our roster and cap space did not start on equal footing. Our QBs were not drafted in the same year. We don't draft with the same picks, the players available were different when we drafted.

We haven't had the same injuries, we haven't had the same surprise stars and we haven't had the same surprise busts.

And most importantly of all this thread egregiously ignores the most common and important player transactions: Free Agency.

Let's start with this, the Colts have the lowest paid offense in the NFL. Their defense is 5th highest in pay.

The Panthers pay out more money on offense than defense.

The Colts have 11m in cap space. Shouldn't they be spending that to surround Luck with weapons?

---------------------------

I'm going to leave the Colts now because that path will lead us nowhere. Dave Gettleman isn't trying to keep up with the colts. He's trying to build a franchise.

$13 million. That is what our 2nd round pick was worth last offseason. DG drafted Kony Ealy to clear $13m in cap space from Greg Hardy next off season. That is money well spent considering how badly the O lineman we passed on have looked.

$19m, that is how much dead money we are carrying right now. Including money to Jon Beason, Jordan Gross, and Steve Smith. Money Marty Hurney gave them. That number drops to 4m next year, although it may go up as we make more cap saving room.

I can clearly see a plan. We are working our way towards the light at the end of the tunnel. We've won a Division Crown despite our cap situation. We got our Number 1 receiver and chose to surround him with savvy vets. When the cap space opens up, I think you will see us make a run at a veteran offensive tackle. Bring along Trai Turner and keep bringing in mid round guards to compete for LG.

The single biggest problem I have with the Panthers front office is Mike Shula. Cam is never going to reach his potential under Mike Shula. We are delaying the inevitable in the name of "continuity".

This fanbase is delusional when it comes to an honest appraisal of Andrew Luck.

The Colts have a bad defense AGAIN, currently ranking 29th in total defense. At least they are consistent, though: they are 29th against the pass and 26th against the run.

The Colts have a poor to mediocre offensive line...Andrew Luck was sacked 3 times and took 8 QB hits last night...those would be season highs for Carolina's offensive line. The Colts averaged 2.7 yards per rush...again, terrible. They are averaging 3.7 yards per rush on the season...24th in the NFL.

The Colts are average at best at running back. Bradshaw is serviceable, but Trent Richardson is a joke, having averaged 3.07 yards per carry since being acquired.

TY Hilton is a nice young player, but let's be real, 1083 yards is his career high. He may well shatter that number this year, but Megatron he is not. Reggie Wayne has had a great career, but he is clearly a shadow of the player he once was. But the Colts do have Hakeem Nicks...LOL...the TE combo of Allen and Fleener is average at best. Greg Olsen would be scary on this team.

And yet, the Colts keep winning.

Luck is leading the league in total yards, yards per game and Touchdowns and doing it with the league's 7th best passer rating and 6th best Total QBR.

After 6 games Luck is on pace to throw for 5300 yards and 45 touchdowns. The guy has a shot at the all time record in both categories.

When you put up monster raw numbers with great efficiency on a winning team that has a questionable overall talent level, there is only one word available in the English language that accurately describes your level of play: ELITE

Its staggering the sports bias some guys have to not be able to call it like you see it.

Didn't Wayne miss most of last year? The team and Luck just get it done. And unless there is a massive earthquake that shrinks the size of the US the divisions will remain as they are barring some crazy realignment. Its more productive to look at what teams have done with what they have instead of this insane bizarre yeah but what if we had player X or if we played team Y. What adult thinks like that?
