Watt is a game changer, he's an athletic freak and probably the best defensive player in the league right now.

Having said that, I will take Luke and I have a non homer reason as to why.

With Watt, if you have an average to above average defense on the field with him, there is only so much he can do playing from one side of the field. Teams can game plan away from him.

With Luke, if you have an average to above average defense on the field with him, he's in the middle and can get all over everywhere (like he does) from rushing the passer, picking up screens, covering guys in the middle and just being an all-around badass.

So what I'm saying is I'd rather have an elite MLB than an elite DE if I had to make that choice.

I will counter with weeks 3 and 4 for the Panthers that show that even if you don't game plan around Luke if the line can't get any pressure and fill gaps it makes Luke look bad.

Look at the performance of the line and defense in general since Hardy has been sitting out. Flashes of brilliance but very inconsistent even though arguably it had better personnel than last season coming in to this year. All because of an absence on one side of the field.

Watt also has a goal line reception and a pick six from the defensive end spot.

I'm not sure what you're saying here doesn't actually strengthen my argument.

 

I mean, to me it's almost an unfair question, which is why I basically answered on a position basis.  

 

Football player to football player, it's hard to argue against the fact that Watt is a better athlete overall than Luke, he's taller, bigger and probably just as fast with an amazing vertical leaping ability.

 

Honestly I haven't watched Watt enough to know, but it seems that Luke has a better football IQ, however that may be a function of position as well...

 

 

Essentially it boils down (for me) to the fact that Watt can beat (in general) one guy, the RT and perhaps a TE and look like a football god, but Luke has to diagnose the whole play, be in the right spot, beat the block of a guy that outweighs him by at least 80 lbs, and still make the play... something which he does on an astoundingly regular basis.

Luke is the QB of the defense he's the guy making adjustments. I'd take him for that fact alone. But Watt is a total monster. 

 

 

Now if I had to pick having him in our defense over Luke I might actually do it because Watt with Star,KK, and CJ would be unstoppable. Sack every play.

Just adding... JJ Watt's salary will be significantly higher than Luke's. I'd take Luke every single time.
