Goodell believes in due process, but...

Mr. Scot

Hardy had to agree to go on the commissioners "exempt" list. The Panthers could have advised him not to, and to fight to get the standard 6 game suspension so he could play later in the year. It would have satisfied the leagues punishment policy for his guilty verdict and shut everyone up in the media.

Stop thinking of this from a fan perspective. A suspension means Hardy loses $5,000,000 in salary. No way in hell is a player gonna do that. He's not gonna play this year, but he won't lose a dime either.

Translation:  This is a business, marketing and PR matters.  So, if you are one of the lucky one's to get into the middle of the Media's Faux Moral Outrage Poo Storms we will have to Put on this exempt list b.s. and you still get paid full amount.  Then if you are found Guilty you might just get Suspended without Pay some more.

To those who do bad things but don't get into middle of Media poo storm, you guys get to play until Due process plays out.  Then if you are guilty or if the League chooses you may get suspended without Pay for the incident.

If they heard and saw that Hardy was found guilty by a judge.....why not just freaking suspend him for the first offense -6 game suspension...and be done with the whole thing?   The only thing the paid on-leave and then the unpaid suspension is hurting is the team.

Hardy went on the exempt list because he legally hasn't been found guilty of anything. His guilty verdict no longer exists so far as his criminal record works. If he was to take the six game suspension straight up, it could be shown as an admission of guilt when he has his jury trial sometime in the next decade. Going on the exempt list is supposed to be the league doing Hardy a favor. Same with AP. They get off the field in a way that doesn't scream "yup, I did it".

So Hardy missing however long he's gonna miss over this isn't a punishment. It's supposed to be helping him.

If Hardy's trial takes a couple years to actually get going..

What would ya make of it if Rice is on the field playing before Hardy?

If Hardy doesn't come off the list before end of the Year then Why would the Panthers re-sign him or any team for that matter and have to Pay hardy indefinitely to not play?

Something has to give with this  list

You can't put the league in a position to pick and choose which accusations are "credible". Either you suspend everyone when charges are filed or you don't. It would turn into a poo storm pretty quick if Judge Goodell started deciding which guys got to stay and which ones didn't based on his clairvoyant ability to discern the truthfulness of dozens of different types of accusations, most of which will have exactly zero witnesses.

Talk about opening a can of worms.

Which is exactly what they're doing.  And as such. actually taking more control rather than less.

Goodell has painted himself into a corner with the media. Scream enough over some perceived social or criminal misdeed and he'll have to cave.

The precedent has been set.

I kinda wonder how it's gonna play out if he tries to handle disciplining a player now.

His authority has taken a definite hit.
