Greg Cosell's Week 5 analysis: Cam Newton's improvement is clear

It's important to note just how much of a role Marshawn Lynch has had in Wilson's success with the Seahawks.

As well as defense. You can't win if you don't have a good defense. Cam was not winning until the defense showed up. I'm surprised people still think of wins as an individual stat.

I mean Wilson was not even the Super Bowl mvp

Not to throw salt into any wounds, but when discussing the top young QB's at this point, there is only one who has taken a team

with a bad defense to the playoffs. And he has done it both of his years in the league. Both times with below average running

games to support his passing. This, and the eye test, are why he gets a lot of love from the media.

There was 20 to 25 yard what I would call a stick throw to Kelvin Benjamin in between 2 defenders against Chicago. Kelvin dropped the pass but Cam put it right into his hands. It was an absolute laser of a throw. I don't think RW could make that throw. The TD pass to Ted Ginn in the Patriot game which was the go ahead score. KC game Cam 2ND YEAR 20 YARD sideline flat route to Steve Smith. A couple of back shoulder fades to Lafell against the Giants. Watch the Chargers Seahawks game from this year week 2. Cam could do what Phillip Rivers did in that game. I have severe doubts RW could play like Phillip Rivers in that game. RW can make plays in the pocket but I wouldn't call him a pocket QB. His feet are such an advantage for him.

I also recall a completion to LaFell that went for a 80+ yard score where a defender hit Cam's arm at the top of his release and his size/strength allowed him to complete the pass in traffic. LaFell scored with a great block from Smitty.

I don't think RW could ever make that throw.

On the other hand, I've seen RW make some throws on the run that Cam just can't make. This is where RW's size helps him. He's able to manuever his smaller frame in ways bigger men can't. Probably the same reason you don't see 6'5" shortstops either.

Under what objective standard is having the 9th rated defense as indicated by point per game, "bad"?

The team I am referencing finished 26th in total defense in 2012 and 20th in total defense last year. Not sure which team you are thinking of.

No doubt but an easy division does help but Cam also has an opportunity to feast on an easy division this year so it's up to him to take advantage.

Luck has been playing pro style since college so it's also helped him. I understand why GMs will take Luck over most of the young guns.

It's nice to be able to play the Jaguars twice a year, and clinch your division at 8 wins.

We play the Bucs twice a year. They swept us in Cam's second season. No game in the NFL is a gimme. You have to win it. Also the division is weak this year, time to "feast" too.

I personally wouldn't put the Bucs in the same breath as the Jaguars. I think they are better than their record, and if I'm being honest, things might have been pretty different if Lovie hadn't been so stubborn and just given Mike Glennon the start from the beginning.

As far as our division goes, it's damn sure not AFC south level weak. The Titains are 1-4. and the Jaguars are 0-5.

If you look at the two divisions objectively over the last couple of years, there really is not that much difference. Let's not forget

the Texans were 12-4 just two years ago...In any event, 11 and 5 is 11 and 5. And you don't get to 11 and 5 without winning

games outside of your division. And once you get to the playoffs and win a game...it means you belong in the playoffs.

I am not a big Luck fan. I don't think I ever mentioned his name on this forum until a couple of days ago.

But the man has taken teams with bad defenses and below average running games to the playoffs both of his years in the League.

He has thrown for 300 + yards in 6 of his last 7 starts, including 453 yards in a playoff win last year.

There comes a point when you start to realize the guy can play. Andrew Luck can play.

Just wanted to point out that on Colin Cowherd today he had Greg Cosell (at least I'm 90% sure that's who it was, and although he didn't say anything bad about Newton he didn't talk about him long. The only thing that stood out was when he said, "Newton isn't a superstar. He may be one day but right now he's not."

I disagree with that statement, I mean people love throwing stats around to back up their opinions like using playoff appearances or Super Bowl wins or completion percentages, etc., but I'd say his stats over three years, especially taking into account our horrible defense in 2011 and our bad run game these few years, Cam is a superstar

You're right. RW can be running to his left and throw a ball with velocity and accuracy. Cam can't make that throw. I was going to write that but I was lazy.
