Greg Cosell's Week 5 analysis: Cam Newton's improvement is clear

So yes I can still say Wilson has played better than Luck and Cam and their is no debating that.

Obviously there is room for "debating that" since that's exactly what we're doing. You have your opinion, and that's fine, but realize it is only an opinion.

Never seen people debating (thinking they are anyways) something that is not really debatable?

That is what we have here.

Wilson has preformed better than Cam to date on nearly every metric imaginable in addition to having a super bowl ring.

Give me an exact example in a game of a throw Cam made that Wilson has never made

There was 20 to 25 yard what I would call a stick throw to Kelvin Benjamin in between 2 defenders against Chicago. Kelvin dropped the pass but Cam put it right into his hands. It was an absolute laser of a throw. I don't think RW could make that throw. The TD pass to Ted Ginn in the Patriot game which was the go ahead score. KC game Cam 2ND YEAR 20 YARD sideline flat route to Steve Smith. A couple of back shoulder fades to Lafell against the Giants. Watch the Chargers Seahawks game from this year week 2. Cam could do what Phillip Rivers did in that game. I have severe doubts RW could play like Phillip Rivers in that game. RW can make plays in the pocket but I wouldn't call him a pocket QB. His feet are such an advantage for him.

It's pretty much always the individuals who were strongly opposed and very outspoken about not wanting the Panthers to draft Newton in the first place who rant on and on about other fans supposedly being homers for having the gall to support our franchise quarterback.

I was thrilled with drafting Cam Newton. Dude is a freak with unlimited potential. Probably watched his college highlights a million times in the lead up to the season.

However, doesn't mean I can't recognize or acknowledge players who have out performed Cam.

And stating such doesn't mean I don't support our QB.

No shame in being placed below Russell Wilson in any QB poll. Dude is a great great QB. I saw it first hand watching him pull houdini stunts at State against my Tarheels.

Wilson is above all the young QB's right now because he has actually won a Superbowl. At the end of the day it's about championships.

I like RW, he's very talented, but so is the team around him.

As far as ranking quarterbacks, it's all personal opinion, and nobody will agree anyway so it's simply a waste of time debating it. What ultimately matters is what each guy brings to his team, and from what we've seen so far we should be very thankful that we have Cam.

When discussing Wilson and Newton it is interesting to see how perception differs from reality.

Over the last two seasons the two are virtually identical in terms of completion percentage on short and intermediate passes.

On throws over twenty yards, I think most people would assume the big, cannon armed Newton would have an advantage over puny little Wilson.

But exactly the opposite is the case.

Over the last two seasons on throws that travel over 20 yards in the air:

Newton is 15 out of 72 for 509 yards

Wilson is 29 out of 71 for 1007 yards

Over the last two seasons, Wilson has been twice as likely to complete a deep pass as Cam Newton.

You grade / rate / rank players on two metrics

1) Wins / Loses / Championships

2) Stats

Even if Wilson didnt win the superbowl he would still be the better QB on paper over all the other young QBs.

Now sure we can debate about how people would do on other teams or in a different system but that is purely speculation at best.

Cam is actually ahead of Wilson in today's nfl.com ranking the starters.

Wilson is just better than Cam in every metric you can assess AT THIS POINT IN TIME. He is an insanely poised skilled QB.

Wilson thrives on disorder. He is lol looking to scramble so defensive backs can uncover and he can deliver the ball. He's not going to beat u by surveying the field and reading the defense. Ironically, the way to beat Wilson is keep him in the pocket. Other that or he'll run.
