Greg Cosell's Week 5 analysis: Cam Newton's improvement is clear

Whether or not it is the ankle injury or work he has put in, Cam has been killing it from the pocket this year.  It is obvious, and I must say that I am impressed.  He hasn't had nearly as many overthrows as previous seasons.  He is putting it on the money more times than not, and he has made some truly spectacular throws this year.

Kaepernick & Wilson are so far behind Cam as a pocket passer it isn't even funny. They both either throw a quick screen, hit their 1st target, or immediately start scrambling.

Cam is sitting in the pocket, scanning the field, & delivering dimes; whether it's a laser bullet through coverage or a soft touch pass. He's made incredible strides. And honestly, I think it's something he's always been able to do, he just didn't have to because of his legs.

Scary when you think that healthy Cam is the most dangerous running QB to ever play the game. From now on he's gonna be able to sit in the pocket & throw, only using his legs when he absolutely has to.

Cam is right on pace to be exactly what everyone, even in the media knew & acknowledged, he had the potential to be, they just didn't think he would reach it; & that's the most dangerous, unstoppable QB the league has ever seen.

I agree that Cam is the most polished quarterback compared to Kap and Wilson but honestly I wish there were two areas where Cam would emulate Wilson and that is getting the ball out more quickly and throwing away the ball when he is going to be sacked or hurried.  There are always at least promising drives which get killed when Cam holds the ball way too long or takes a sack instead of throwing it away.   And it isn't just elusiveness since WIlson is every bit as elusive as Cam but Wilson is much better at getting rid of the ball instead of holding it and taking a sack.

Totally agree. My only gripe on Cam is where and when he takes a sack. Yeah not all sacks are on him but he has had some kill a possible fg.

Wilson had 3 guys in his face the moment he snapped the ball last night and somehow managed to get just outside the hash to chunk it.

That is really only thing I wish Cam would improve.

Let's see Wilson behind the Panthers OL then.

The arm chair quarterbacks can sit around slurping beer, but the truth is sometimes a sack is just going to happen.

Cam has turned plenty of broken plays into good ones all on his own, and until we actually give a fug about building a real OL around him, the last thing I'm going to do is complain about a few sacks. Focus on the real problem, and Cam isn't it. People don't realize how lucky we are.

Have u ever though that maybe Cam is conditioned to get as much out of a drive as he could.

Also, I just love how we automatically assume things when it comes to these QBs. The automatic assumption that white QBs r better pocket passers than blacks and not that many of these colleges simply play to the strength of their players because they are more interested in wins than anything else. I am sure that had Cam been taught to be a pocket passer in college, it would carry over to the NFL.

Heck, even the Panthers team, with it's pathwork style of play, simply continued to use Cam's strength to make up for the team's inadequacies and win games. It's only now that he can't run as much why the desire to have him sit in the pocket is necessary.

I am sure if colleges would take the time to teach the black QBs to sit in the pocket, like the do with the white ones, we wouldn't be hearing the silly back handed compliment like this Cam is sitting in the pocket because an injury has forced him too.

Heck, how come RG's injuries haven't made him a better pocket passer? How come Johnny Manziel isn't a natural pocket passer.Just goes to show u that the technique is taught.

Shoot, San Fran does Kaep the same way. Especially the year he took over. Instead of letting him get better, they focused on what he did good. Which hurt his development, and they still lost the Super Bowl.

Lets not be homers. Wilson is a better QB right now than Cam. Cam has more potential and is a darn good QB himself. But Wilson is just insane when it comes to playing within himself, not making mistakes, evading pressure, and making things happen with his legs AND arm.

We can't so no need to even do that.

Are you incapable of objectively critiqued Cam when you see it? Are you on his payroll or something?

The context of my post response to p55 is what to improve. Which I said was ONE thing. One. Some of you guys I swear are borderline infatuated.

I couldn't agree more. There is a group of posters on here that I swear are related to cam. (Or at least are related in their imagination). I mean come on, I love the fact that cam is the panthers qb but he is not perfect.
