The guys at Black and Blue Review are as horrified by this NFLN piece as I am

Cam Newton will start being discussed as an elite QB as soon as he puts up elite passing numbers.

With rare exceptions, it is raw numbers that get a player catapulted into "elite" status.

As well as he has played this year, his numbers are basically middle of the road or worse.

He is:

14th in NFL passer rating

24th in Total QBR

23rd in completion percentage

15th in yards per game

14th in yards per attempt

And before you play the "terrible offensive line, no run game" card, consider what Phillip Rivers is doing in San Diego.

The criticism that goes nowhere. That guy made no sense at all. he's all over the place with this piece. His boss should have asked him to re-do it.

And of course, they find every reason to mention Luck's name is every conversation pertaining to Cam, Winston, Bridgewater, Kaepernick, Wilson, and many more to come. The guy become like an advertisement. Always a Luck plug.

The length they go to promote that guy is getting ridiculous.

Wilson ran for a 15 yard gain.......but Luck is mobile too.

Bridgewater feel the pocket and complete a pass for 15 yards......Luck is great pocket feeler.

Winston is accurate with the deep ball......but one day he could be just like Luck in throwing the deep ball.

It's getting freaking annoying. Why does Luck have to be compared to everyone of those guys. Every single one. Let the young guys breathe for christ' sake!

What an idiot. He is basically saying why can't Cam go 16-0 and win the superbowl even without an OL, run game, def, etc. because he is superman and superman should be able to do it. Personally I think he just hates Cam from all the problems in the past (press conferences, towel on head, entertainer icon). Guess what times have changed and Cam is a new person so its time to update your view of him.

So, by your logic, then Alex Smith and Nick Foles are the creme de la creme when arriving to this aspect of the argument? Don't make me laugh. We're a run dominant team. Cam is never going to pass for 400 yards on 40 attempts like Brees, Ryan and Luck do. At least not until Shula gets fired. Ironically enough, there was a time when Brady wasn't viewed as elite either and was posting game manager stats. Regardless of your opinion, Cam is most definitely a Top 10-12 QB.

Funny you mention Rivers when he was on decline last season when his OL and RBs were nonexistent. Hmmmmmm, interesting, huh?

Actually, QB's on run oriented teams tend to have higher NFL passer ratings and total QBR's than comparable players on pass oriented teams. Often times they will also have higher completion percentages as well. Passing yardage is certainly not the only factor in determining QB play, nor necessarily the most important.

Look at Kapernick's and Wilson's numbers in this regard. I believe they have both finished in the top 10 in passer ratings the last two years, but neither is generally considered elite...though Wilson is nudging his way into the conversation. Of course he has the "winning" pedigree, which when continued long enough, trumps all.

I am not sure where Alex Smith enters into the discussion. He has finished in the top ten in NFL passer rating once, finishing 9th, with only 3100 yards passing.

Foles finished 1st in the NFL in passer rating last year on a run dominant team, but I have never heard anyone even suggest he is "elite".

I am not sure what you are talking about in regards Rivers...San Diego is averaging 2.8 yards per rushing attempt this year, worst in the NFL.

I would consider the 10-12 range for Newton not unreasonable.

The others I get, but Eric Davis?  Disagree completely.

I might not agree with everything he says but Davis knows what he's talking about.

A lot of times I'm convinced some of these guys are told what to present and in what manner when they get in front of the big ESPN/NFLN cameras.

I've seen very respectable write ups and interviews from guys like Bucky Brooks and Trent Dilfer, but the second they get in front of those cameras they start saying the same jargon everyone else is, even if it directly contradicts an article they posted the previous day.

I've watched a few SD games this year and sure their run game is non-existent, but their o-line is holding up pass protection better than ours.

Cam is very confident.  He portrays himself as Superman and holds himself to that standard.  He knows how good he is but wants to be the greatest ever and isn't shy about saying so.

The media can't stand that and know that the bigger someone is the better the story will be when they bring them crashing down.  The better a player you are the more humble you have to be or the the worse the media is going to come after you.  All they care about is what will make the best story and usually that's a major star being knocked down a few pegs.  They'll take any chance they get to create that story.

When Cam wins a few playoff games they'll get on board because Cam overcoming his bad attitude and humbling himself to win will be the easier story to generate.
