Cam Newton, QB: +4.5 passing

Breakdown: The raw stats don’t impress, but Newton’s play was so much more than the numbers on Sunday. His receivers did him no favors with three dropped passes, and Kelvin Benjamin had a perfect pass knocked from his hands by Kyle Fuller late in the first. With a +2.1 passing grade under pressure, Newton consistently made plays while avoiding mistakes. Even his lone interception was hardly his fault, with Lance Briggs making a diving grab off of a batted pass.

Signature Play: With 51 seconds left in the first half, Newton dropped a beautiful lob on a go route behind the corner while leading Benjamin away from the free safety, only for Benjamin to get turned around and fail to locate the would-be score.

Thomas Davis, LB: +4.1

Breakdown: Davis bounced back from a disappointing outing against Pittsburgh with an outstanding performance against the Bears. Sure, he missed a couple tackles, but Davis was absolutely everywhere on Sunday, recording six defensive stops. He attacked the ball in coverage, allowing four completions for a meager 20 yards and tallying a pass defense in the process.

Signature Play: Q2, 6:32. Davis showed off his incredible coverage skills. Pressed up to the line and threatening an A-gap blitz at the snap, Davis turned to run with Brandon Marshall up the seam, forcing contact the instant the ball arrives and deflecting the pass, resulting in Carolina’s first pick.

Charles Johnson, DE: +2.3 pass rushing

Breakdown: Johnson hasn’t done a lot recently to make good on the massive contract he was handed a few years ago, but matched up with Jordan Mills and backup tackle Michael Ola, he earned his keep. Recording his first sack of the season along with four additional hurries and a batted pass, Johnson added the game-sealing fumble recovery as icing on the cake.

Signature Stat: Johnson earned his first green pass rushing grade since Week 10 of last season.

PFF Game Ball

He had eight defensive stops and 14 tackles without a miss. What more could you ask for from Luke Kuechly (+5.5)?

With my limited football knowledge it looked like he wasn't trying to force a play. He hung out and watched things develop then crushed their hopes

 

That's his role, and it's crazy what happens when the rest of the defense does their job and lets him do his.  Not sure what happened the last couple of weeks, but it's clear that this defense is built around rushing the passer, maintaining discipline, and setting the LBs free to wreck stuff.

Cam's legit. Nothing better than when people want to complain, but cant find anything to complain about. Can't wait to see what happens when he gets a full complement of weapons befitting his status as a prototype warmachine.

My Sunday Ticket froze a few times. I figured it was struggling to compress the awesomeness into a feed.

What happened was an OL was doubling down on Star and releasing to Luke in less than 2 seconds while the RB slow played the LBs to set up blocks against the Steelers and Ravens.

Against the Bears they mixed in 46 and 52 LB press defenses when they anticipated run to keep Luke and TD clean. When defenses do not need to scheme to double multiple DLs you need to put another body on the line of scrimmage to keep from being dominated up the middle.

Cam is looking like a true laser guided passer right now. I mean this kid makes every throw in the book, including the touch ones now. His accuracy is very underrated and his arm strength has never been in question. 

 

I'll admit, I thought he looked injured last week and maybe needed a rest to get healthy. But after this game and the o-lines overall performance, I don't think I could have been more wrong.

      Curious what his price is, but definitely think we need to resign him. Hard to find a quality tackle - he's definitely improved and having a stable guard in lewis beside him has helped a ton. Still needs to work on the false start and holding penalties though

      Yeah, you want actual Panthers fans to succeed. Same with poor Will Levis a few years ago. You just wish the local ACTUAL Panthers fans(very rare in the first place), pan out.  But, alas, it is what it is. I don't know if it is as simple as having Ikey switch to RT immediately. I think the cleanest switch would have been to attempt that for him as a LG. But, we spent a fuging shitload of dough on our IOL.

      Seriously? You think we might have 4 or even 5 starters the next couple years from last year’s draft? Wallace and Legette were starters because of injuries and no good depth. We’ve already resigned Thielen and drafted TMac. I’d be shocked if Legette isn’t WR4 (snap/target/production wise) behind those two and Coker. I’m not Sure if Wallace will stay a starter with Rozeboom. Smith-Wade might be the likeliest starter for now because we didn’t draft a CB. We’ll see if he sticks. Sanders may also start but the starting TE is like being the tallest midget. We’ve had about 500ish receiving yards from TEs each of the past 3 years whether it was Thomas/Tremble or Tremble/Hurst or Tremble/Sanders. Honestly, if Evans can stay healthy, the fact that he can actually block (unlike Thomas who sucked but was called a blocking TE) and catch could make him the best starter we have at TE. Also, Brooks missing two of four rookie contract seasons and caused us to draft Etienne in the 4th and sign Dowdle. Sorry man, you’re smoking some serious hopium trying to justify last year’s draft as if it was good. We are one of the worst talented teams in the NFL over the past 7 seasons and sometimes that means that we get a lot of rookie contributors but it doesn’t mean it was a good draft. Until the rookies are actually above average starters it’s like going from Thomas to Tremble to Sanders to Evans. There’s no impact to our win total until one of them actually is more than just a starter because we have to play someone. One last nugget, we won’t be a playoff team if 25% of our starters are from the 2024 draft.
