Offensive Coordinators are never as bad as fans seem to think.

I think Shula is Middle of the road.

I don't understand the complaints about the 3rd and 17 call only down three on your own 10 yard line. Their are times to be aggressive and that isn't one of them. Too many things can go wrong when you need 18 yards and the defense knows it.

You really only have a few options; a RB or WR screen; a shovel pass (what we did) and a draw.

Instead we had to settle for 22 first downs, 31 points, and a win

Have to love it when we run the "No Huddle" offense,seems that tempo suits our offense.

You can't pass if you don't have protection. You can sustain drives if you fumble. Other than the bomb on 3rd and 3. Not sure what the Shula hate is going to focus on this week.

Shula made great adjustments during this game...going to short three step drops and working the middle if the field.

The best is when people blame him for not throwing to Dixon. As if their are plays that are drawn up that only go to one player and that player's ability to get open and the QBs decision on where to pass has nothing to do with where the ball goes.

Going long on 3rd and short is a play every team has to have in the playbook when you have a deep threat like KB. Teams do this all the time. Even late in the game.

 

And as others have typed, Cam would have had other options. The play was just not there. 

 

I like the play-calling.

He doesn't seem to have any idea how to get cam into a groove. Over the course of the game you see 3-4 times where cam is getting comfy then there's a questionable sequence of play calls and it's back to square one

I'm amazed at how people are complaining about running the ball on a 3rd & 17 deep in your own territory in the 4th quarter with your defense playing well and with enough time to get the ball back.  That was a safe and correct playcall for the situation.

Every playcall should work and we should score TDs on every possession. Otherwise, fire the OC

There are two strange things I noticed about our offensive play calling.

 

1) On obvious running plays we lineup without any of our starting WRs. I saw us lineup with Bersin and Philly Brown on one play and another with Olsen and Brown at wideout. The whole stadium knows we are running. We have been doing this for a couple of years and I wonder if this is just us or if every team does it. I have no idea.

2) Cam is doing this kind of fake read option play where he lazily sticks the ball in the running back's gut and pulls it back. But we really don't run the read option anymore. It's just a fake handoff that doesn't fool anyone.

Pretty sure in a game last year we had a similar 3rd and long situation and ran the exact same play with Tolbert and got the first down.

That time it wasn't a dumb playcall though
