supposedly steve smith had a very tense meeting with JR and jeff davidson back when he was here, it might have been in 2010 but i don't remember.

anyway at one point things were getting heated and davidson was reportedly ordered to stand down to steve by richardson, effectively undermining the hell out of his authority as the offensive coordinator.

Yep.  It was Bill Rosinski who told that story.

Per Rosinski, Davidson was told that he wasn't allowed to even talk to Smith.

That's how you create a spoiled brat.

Voth actually has direct contact with the people involved in this story on a regular basis.  He also knows way more about what really happened behind the scenes than you do.

Whose opinion should I take more seriously?

Again, you are not addressing the issue. I don't care what went on during the season, and before the season...blah blah blah.  I expect the GM and the HC to act more professionally and responsibly, period.  You don't have to respect or agree with that opinion. That's your choice.

Mr. Scot, just because you want to say he is actling like a spoiled child doesn't mean he's acting like a spoiled child. That's just your opinion.  Personally I don't think that Gettleman or Rivera acted like grown men the way that Smitty was notified, but that's my opinion.  There is not necessarily a right answer here.  The truth is probably somewhere in between.

Here's a question that guides me as far as the issue of who's acting mature.

Who - when they have every opportunity to refute stories and defend themselves - is declining comment, refusing to join the fray and moving forward, and who's calling out of market radio stations to whine and b--ch?

I notice your expectations of people who should behave "professionally and responsibly" don't include Steve Smith.

Probably a good idea, since he doesn't appear to be capable of it.

I never said that Smitty was acting maturely or not.  To me, that's not the issue.  Anyone would be mad if they heard they got fired over the radio, much less Steve Smith. That's not a shocker.

As to not joining the fray and declining to comment, that bespeaks of some guilt, or at least lends some credence to what Smith is saying.  If Smitty is lying, then defend your team's honor like a man.  Don't try and handle the situation with class now, because you didn't handle it with class in the first place, which is what led to the situation spinning out of control.

Oooohh, so Smitty can behave however he wants, but everybody else has to act mature.  Got it.

And no, it doesn't lend any credence to Smith's story.  All it points to is that they're capable of acting like professionals, unlike Smith.

You're talking about class while defending a guy who took a nice gesture by his coach (going to the locker room, shaking Smith's hand and wishing him well) into something negative.  Ironic.

Face it.  Smith is a raging narcissist.  Any version of events he gives is going to be skewed to make himself look better.  Voth, on the other hand, is a journalist whose job is to get the facts, and he does it extremely well.

Again, who to believe...

Smitty is being human. he is being himself. He is not the poster child for maturity, and never has been.  But, the way that he is responding to erroneous information that is being reported about him is not beyond the pale of a modicum of maturity, and others may have handled the situation worse than he did believe it or not.

Managers of all types are held to a higher standard of professionalism, maturity and responsibility than their charges.  It may not be true in every arena, but it's true in more than you or I can count.  That's life.

A raging narcissist? LOL.  One that you rooted for for 13 years.

And even then, had no illusions about what he was.  Hence, why I've always called him a double-edged sword.

You wanna try and claim he's not a narcissist?  Good luck with that.

Yes, he's human.  Specifically, he's a 35 year old human who's acting like a 5 year old.

It's pretty clear your stance is Smith can't be held accountable for anything he does, but everyone else has to be held accountable for how they treat him.

What's funny is that's exactly the kind of treatment that made him such a spoiled brat in the first place.

Darin Gantt basically said that everyone who knew Smith should not be surprised by Smith having a great game and burning bridges.  He said that Smith shouldn't have taken things so personally, but that Gettleman should have handled the situation better as well.

He specifically said that people are always throwing the Jerry Rice and Joe Montana argument around, but he basically said that it's apples and oranges because those guys were notified privately and had time to make the transition within their minds, whereas Smith didn't.

Both Gantt and Glenn basically said that it was OK to move on from Smith, but that Gettleman should have handled the situation befitting of the franchise legend that Smitty was (is).

That's what I and others had been saying all along.

I don't know about that...I don't have insider info just like most of us. and yet some fans knew he was on the out once the 2014 season was over, I'd say he was blissfully ignorant and then took it all way too personal.
