The 3 players Hurney traded up for

Every Panthers fan knows that JR was still making team decision until he hired Gettelmen. Hurney lost all the power of making decisions when a Fox was fired. RR and Hurney had to run all player moves thru JR.

He had to be convinced that Cam was the choice Thru the scouting work and over the top background work done by Hurney and RR. And it still took a 1 on 1 dinner to convince him. So no Cam wasn't JR idea or 1st choice. Hurney had to push Cam on JR.

Looking at the backdrop of the whole situation, there was no question the Big Cat wanted Andrew Luck.  If memory serves me correctly, I think he even mentioned that Luck was the pick.  So with all that, I'm sure JR had visions concerning his team being built around a young star QB in Luck.  Once Luck decided to return to college, being punked by the pie chart and all, I'm sure JR's dream didn't die off all willy nilly.  I'm sure all that research that went into Cam, was the result of Richardson's dream for this team when considering drafting Luck.  He wanted a QB for his team that year.

Sure they do, which I mean in all seriousness. I'll never know as much about football as Mayock has forgotten but his job isn't necessarily to communicate that information to you accurately.

Plain and simple there were question about Cam ability and how long would it take for him to translate into the league.

He wasn't a can't miss or "safe" prospect . There were at least 4 safer prospect with huge upside and Hurney made a risky pick. He deserves a lot of credit for finally getting us a franchise QB.

Ultimately we actually agree.  Yes he does deserve credit for the pick.  I suppose Cam wasn't a "safe" pick either, but I would have performed seppuku had we not picked him.

Yes JR wanted Luck but he had to be convinced about Cam. Again they did 1 of the most extensive back ground checks in team history. And it was all to convince JR. So no again Cam wasn't JR 1st or 2nd choice until Hurney went overboard to convince him.

If you were on this site when that draft happened you would have seen the biggest division of fans in team history.

Some people wanted Cam. Some people wanted Green, Some wanted Peterson, and others wanted to trade down.

And when Cam was picked it was a big battle between the pro Cam and anti Cam people for weeks.

So Cam wasn't a popular or safe pick here I know.

Yet I can't see them doing that much research unless it was approved by JR in the first place.  It's not like he never heard of Newton, and Hurney brought him to JR's attention.  If they really went above and beyond in checking Cam out, it has to be because that is what Richardson wanted them to do.  Having the dinner was just the icing on the cake. (I don't think JR signed off on Cam because of the dinner heehee)  The same pick would have been made no matter who the GM was at that time.

I was trying to find previous posts of mine for another purpose but they only appear to go back to 2013 though maybe I shouldn't have used the show content button :(

I was here when Jake had his meltdown.  I was here when Clausen lead us to the #1 pick. I remember the people wanting Dareus not so much Peterson and Green.  Those idiots ;)

Of all people to convince me about Cam Newton it was the racist that shall not be named.  He actually got me wanting him over Luck whether he declared or not.

Really?? Is the hate that much that you've fabricated a way that JR made a personal decision based on hom wanting Luck??

Dude how do you know he didn't want Gabbert? ?

Again JR doesn't talk to scouts or scout player. He doesn't go to pro days or the combine. He doesn't watch coach tape or talk to high school community college or teachers of prospect. Hurney did all of that. JR just owns the team and meet players after Hurney has picked them.

There is no way JR is giving his opinion on a player before Hurney has.

People fail to mention the new player agreements, and rookie salary caps also started the year Hurney drafted Cam, that played a HUGE role in drafting Cam and taking the lowered risk. A bust would not have destroyed and set back a franchise like years' past. You can bet that swayed an owner like JR more than anything to take a chance on Cam.

We'll never know but in my opinion, had this not been the case, I honestly don't think the Panthers would have taken Cam.
