DeMarco Murray on pace to break the 30-yr-old NFL single-season rushing record of 2,105 yds

Texans, on facing Dallas on Sunday:

Texans nose tackle Ryan Pickett: “They’re the best running team in the league right now. It’s a challenge.”

How do the Texans stop DeMarco Murray?

“You gotta do whatever you can,” Texans starting defensive end Jared Crick said. “If you can get off a block and make a tackle outright, that’s the best case scenario but then if something slows him down, you get a group tackle and everybody has to get to the ball. You have to get him down somehow. He’s a great back, a tough runner. You have to do whatever you can to get him down."

This is the last year of Murray's rookie contract, and he is only earning $755,469

Cowboys Blog, Blogging the Boys:

"The Cowboys would like to keep Murray for a reasonable price. I have seen a figure of $3 million a year for three years bandied about. The problem is that it is almost certain that at least one NFL team with more cap space will be willing to go higher. Probably a good bit higher

...

Every 100 yard game that Murray racks up is going to make him harder to keep. Every touchdown he scores is going to make him more attractive to another team

...

Cowboys fans want Murray back next year, but it is unlikely. He will want to be paid, and he will richly deserve it. He will cash in somewhere else where they can afford to pay him."

If he keeps this up and is looking for a huge payday, the best thing to do IMO is to franchise tag him. Then if he repeats this level of performance the following season just franchise tag him again. You can't franchise him 3 years in a row but by then he'd be at that point where RBs fall off so you'd have gotten about all you can out of him anyway.

Big fat long term contracts for RBs almost never work out. I can't remember the last one that did to be honest.

Comcast Sports Houston:

"If Murray ran the ball only on first down, he'd still be the leading rusher in the league. Murray has gained 418 yards in 1st-and-10 situations. The next closest player, Alfred Morris, has 191.

...

What has really made Murray's 2014 season even more impressive is the way he's picking up yards. Murray has rushed for 327 yards before contact. That’s more than all but two players have total rushing yards."

Sporting News:

"The Cowboys haven’t had an NFL rushing leader since Emmitt Smith did it three times during their last Super Bowl heyday. Murray has been a 100-yard smooth running machine all season, the MVP of their 3-1 start. Just like Emmitt, he’s rolling through an elite people-moving offensive line, this time led by stud Tyron Smith."

5 ypc for his career so far. Only 2 RBs have done that i believe. Brown and Barry.

EDIT: Gale Sayers did but also had a very short career with no downslide.

AP is right at 5

Jamaal Charles is at a shocking 5.5 so far.

Mercury Morris but only 1 1000 yard year. They split carries down there hard.

Marion Motley. One of the first black players.5.7 but again not too many carries

from the start of last season until now, Murray is #1 in the NFL with 5.24 yards per carry, followed by Jamaal Charles (4.90), Chris Ivory (4.77), and LeSean McCoy (4.68) among qualified RBs (min 175 attempts)

-Adrian Peterson is #8 with 4.47

-Marshawn Lynch is #17 with 4.22

-Frank Gore is #20 with 4.14

for this season so far, PFF has Chris Ivory with the best Elusive Rating among running backs with at least 50 carries at 118.7. The nearest player is at 96.0 (Cowboys’ Demarco Murray).

note: before the 2013 season, the Saints traded Chris Ivory (then 24 yrs old) to the Jets for a 2013 4th round pick, after Ivory had run for 1,307 yds and 8 TDs on 256 carries for the Saints (5.1 yards per carry).

PFF on DeMarco Murray:

"No running back has a higher pure rushing grade, and it isn’t even close right now. His 28 forced missed tackles are 11 more than any other back...he had seven missed tackles forced last week alone

...

Murray has been the workhorse of this Cowboys offense with a league high 99 carries ... Murray has compiled both a league-high 28 missed tackles on the ground and 331 rushing yards after contact, which is an average of 3.3 yards per attempt and is tied for second in the league. Murray’s ability to break tackles and make defenders miss has aided his impressive Breakaway Percentage of 40.2% and has given him a league-leading 10 runs of 15+ yards for a total of 216 yards, also a league-high."
