So why not do it like last year?

Piggybacking off prior discussion () although you could debate which elements we have or don't, I think it's generally agreed that right now the Panthers don't have all the elements necessary to run an effective Coryell offense.

But what's really odd about all this?

We didn't really run a straight Coryell attack all last season.

Last year, the coaches chose to go more 'West Coast' in the offensive attack.  Many of us found it a curious choice given that, to that point, shorter passes were not exactly Cam Newton's strong suit. He was a much better longballer, so why switch from what he was good at to what he was not as good at?

Still, given that we had issues on the offensive line, a short quick passing game made a lot of sense.  The hope was that Newton would make the adjustment quickly, and he did.  Despite one or two bumps in the road early, Newton actually worked pretty well with the short passing game.  And combined with an effective defense, that offensive approach helped us to go 12-4, win the division and secure a first round bye.

Fast forward to now, and sad to say we have issues with the offensive line protection again.

So in light of that, the big question:

Why aren't we going back to the approach that worked last year?

I actually believe I know the reason (or at least a reason) but I want to hear what others have to say first.

Well personally I think one of the best things we can do right now is to take more shots down field to KB.  More often than not he's caught the balls he's been thrown. He's so damn big and his positioning is fantastic. Odds are he's going to get the damn football.

The more big catches he makes the more defenses will back off and respect us.

I thought I sensed a shift to a shorter passing attack during the Baltimore game after Cam was sacked a couple of times.

Deangelo isn't as good of a receiver as Stewart or Tolbert. That may have something to do with it. WCO requires more timing and Cam hasn't had enough time working with the new receivers.

This requires Cam remain upright long enough but I agree. They are also calling more PI than before so you have the chance for a 60 yard penalty.

When I think of the West Coast offense, I think of Running backs that can do it all. Block, run, and catch. Route running is very important in the West Coast offense. Also shorter drop backs and quicker releases.

Our running backs are a mess and Kelvin is limited in his route running. Jason Avant is the only receiver I can think of with extensive experience in the West Coast. Jonathan Stewart doesn't fit the West Coast and I don't think our offensive line is a great fit for it.

I've seen Cam take a shotgun snap and do a 3 step drop. This buys him time from the interior rush but it puts enormous pressure on our tackles Chandler and Bell. The further Cam drops back, that harder it is for our tackles to block. And Cam takes a LOT of deep drop backs.

Cam Newton has a cannon. WCO & other dink/dunk garbage is for noodle arms like Peyton, Brady, Brees, etc.

Throw the damn ball down the field.

Go watch Brady back in his prime of the 2007, that dude had a cannon throwing it 60-70 yards downfield for Moss.

Why doesn't Carolina use Cam's arm like that?

    • The SEC were not having GT upset Georgia at home. Horrendously corrupt officiating in this game - the non-PI on 4th down and the non-targeting call on the King fumble. Good lord.
    • I like how they were about to punt the ball right before the two minute warning before being like... oh fug, this'll be too obvious we gotta try a FG then ole boy skulls one that never got more than about 12 feet off the ground. LOL!
