PFT: Bears might rather face Newton

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

If the story about what the Ravens brass said is true though, in this case he actually does have a basis for this particular speculation (unbelievable as that may be for Florio).

I still think he's wrong, mind you, but that sadly would mean it isn't the completely baseless speculation that I expected it to be.

The story had nothing to do with the Raven Brass.

It was supposedly said by Ravens players. And Florio wasn't clear was it said before, or after the game.

He also gave no context. What if this was said in passing, or as a complement to Cam, etc...

Plus, I don't care what any unnamed players allegedly said, when Newton played very well in that game, as he's done all season so far.

This is how you have negative media stories on Newton, when he's not even playing badly; only perpetuating a stereotype that doesn't' exist; muddying up his name.

Florio's story on the Mac attack was specious, and so was this one forwarding it to the Bears.

The sample size for a backup is so small. I never understand these proclamations.

For Anderson it is not that small. Since 2009, Anderson has 22 TDs and 28 INTS.  It is like people have blinders on when it comes to backups.  Anderson is a solid backup for sure.  But he has not played well consistently since 2008.

Tampa didn't game plan for Derek Anderson at all. I don't get where this Derek gives the team a better chance to win type of thing is coming from other than you know what. It's not like Cam is going out there and stinking it up. He's had a passer rating over 94 in each of his games this year and has only turned the ball over once with no interceptions. So because Cam isn't running, you argue that Derek is going to come in and give the team a better chance. How? What is he going to do that Cam hasn't been doing? Because the offense has moved the ball well.

Derek Anderson played a sorry ass Tampa team, with a healthy Tolbert, with a Deangelo, with a JStew, with a healthy Cotchery. And on the other side of the ball Greg Hardy was on the field with a healthy Thomas Davis.

Since Cam has returned he's only had half a game with his starting running back, one game with all of his WRs healthy and Greg Hardy hasn't played at all, and Thomas Davis has been limited.

But yea lets put in DA because he'll make the defense create turnovers and put him in a good position like they did at Tampa. He'll call up the NFL and tell them to let Greg Hardy play. He'll magically heal Tolbert, Williams, and Stewart. He'll make Thomas Davis 100%. Hell he might even jump on defense and stop the run. Why? Because he obviously is the solution right now.

The only way DA is better than Cam as a pocket passer or otherwise is as a sacrificial offering behind our O-line.

I'll give him one advantage: Anderson does legitimately tend to get the ball out a little quicker than Newton does.  And I'll grant that this is magnified behind a porous offensive line.

That one thing though is not enough to make him a better passer.  Newton is still the better passer overall.

There's no way I'd sit Newton unless I felt he were too injured to play, and I don't believe that's true right now.

I'm really hoping it doesn't become true

LOL

safe to say he hasn't been watching our team. Newton even though he isn't running is playing great.

Anderson hasn't put 3 games together like Cam has since early 2007. It is sad that media today simply writes to get hits and not actually do the job for real

Anderson has only one time that I know of put three good games together at all.

That's why I've said I like Anderson the backup, but not Anderson the starter.

There's some credence to DA being a better pocket passer than cam. As hobbled as cam is, I think Anderson may give us a better shot to win in the extremely short term. The right call is to go with cam though unless the line can't protect at all.

I think cam needs to follow mcnair's career trajectory. As he ages, with bucks and minor injuries, he won't be able to play superman forever. We've seen him improve in the pocket, and if we leave him there, now that he can't escape as easily, I think he will develop even more quickly. A few growing pains but well with living through.

I can envision a more pocket developed cam when he gets his wheels back but before he ages too much that could be fantastic.
