Gil Brandt draft redo

Gettleman should get credit for what he's done but also criticism for what he's failed to do.

On the whole I'm very happy to have him as our GM, but he failed to address the OL issues in any meaningful way. My assumption is he didn't want to leverage the future of the time to make a short term move, but he gambled our current players would be good enough, and they're just not.

The thing is our window is somewhere between 5 and 10 years with Cam as our QB, so Gman is going to play the long game, and sometimes his stop gap plans aren't going to work.

The Panthers are the ONLY team mentioned in that article with THREE players catching Brandt's eye enough to have them higher in a redraft (never-mind significantly higher) . The Raiders have 3 on the list but Mack went from 5 to 7. ALL HAIL GMAN.

i like it a lot.

not criticizing the other picks, but i'm wondering where kony ealy would have shown up. i doubt if gettleman wasn't so addicted to defensive linemen that we would have picked him there. i'm still having problems with that pick and the fact that he's pretty much been invisible so far while the ther DE we put a franchise tag on (another move i wasn't crazy about either) sits somewhere away from the field still collecting his paycheck.

oh...and for the question of what should/could have been done on the OL. james frikkin hurst...you know, the guy who is now starting for the ravens that they picked up as a udfa and graded out much better than bell and chandler in his first start?

oh...and what else could he have done? brought in some competition instead of just deciding to settle on chandler and bell early on. i have a hard time believing that those two would have outright beat out all FAs we could have brought in, regardless of how crappy the market was. the decision was made to go with those two as the starters early on in the offseason and gettleman acted like there was no need to even try to bring in competition.

oh well, hopefully that changes next year.

So let's see. D G sucks because he didn't draft any offensive tackles. He sucks because he brings in 2nd tier FA's. He sucks because he franchised bone head Hardy. He sucks because he has a fat ass and wears his shorts up to his armpits.

The reality is he knows talent and has drafted very well. Produced starters out of mid range and lower end draft picks. He made the most of his FA signings on a welfare budget. Upgraded this WR corp on that same budget. Franchised Hardy for the year without caving and signing him to a "Hurney" contract (which in hindsight was correct since Hardy has a screw loose). And he will be starting a new clothes line for men with 52 waistlines or larger...maybe not.

Unless you would rather have a GM like Reggie Mckenzie of the Raiders who has 1 guy starting out of their last 3 drafts, then be happy with who we have.

We all wanted James Hurst. Can't believe we didn't draft him.

Anyway. Thrilled with the Benjamin pick and he could be the sole-saving grace that keeps Cam in a Panthers uniform.

The line will just have to gel and Cam is still on the mend, so it could still work out once all things get up to speed.

Kraken is the most dynamic player on our defense. When he returns this team will be much better. Hard to weigh which player is more valuable between a top-3 DE and a pro bowl-caliber LT. Bird in hand has my vote.

i like gettleman and he's the guy i was hoping we'd get, but he has his flaws. i dont see a problem i pointing out his issues in the midst of his greater number of successes.

he nailed it with several picks early and mid round, but missed it on a couple as well. he's done a good job of revamping and rebuilding a couple areas (like WR and esp. DT, imo) but the amount of resources spent on DE is something that i had a problem with from the beginning, and the same goes for the lack of effort to at least bring in competition for OT. those two were the only real mistakes he made. the rest is good.

kraken more than likely won't wear a panthers jersey ever again. not much of a bird in the hand. more like just a big moth.

What really screwed us up was Gross retiring. I think they were really banking on him giving it one more year.

Me too.

I suspect the RT spot was to be a competition and Gross give them stability for one more year.

I think he suits up after sitting out six games.

In retrospect, it's easy to say let Hardy walk but where is that all pro LT that possibly could have been brought in? You won't find one.

With or without Hardy, we weren't going to do much improving on the OL, and looking at where the D is currently, we'd be screaming for the Kraken.

we wouldn't have been screaming for kraken. we would have been sitting there watching some other team sit him relieved that we weren't the team that gave him a lot of money to do nothing.

meanwhile, it's bordering on ridiculous thinking that the $15mil we would have saved by not tagging hardy wouldn't have been used to stengthen other areas of the team, namely OT. we wasted $15mil this year. but oh well...at least we didn't let him walk for nothing. we're just paying him for nothing.

Don't blame the 13 millon money lost this year on anyone but Hardy. He was intent on getting paid, and when he made a one year windfall... he could not keep his crap together. He cost the team and teamates dearly. The blame lays squarely on his shoulders and no one else.
