shula is a symptom, not the disease

We are 2-2 and the JR bashing begins.

The truth is JR would love for the Panthers to put up 30+ points a game. This is why he ditched Hurney and brought in Gettleman. JR doesn't care how the points are scored, that's a fairly silly notion. He isn't insistent on a run game. Even though he is a former player himself, ironically he may be the league owner that interferes least with the workings of the team. More points = more sales and concessions. Thats all you need to know about JR's views, and rightfully so.

After witnessing countless behind the scenes interactions between JR and his players and coaches, there is zero doubt in my mind the has the total and complete respect from his franchise.

Everyone is free to have their own views, but I won't be jumping on the "JR is the problem" wagon anytime soon.

Panthers fans have never had the experience of having a truly bad franchise owner. Don't assume the next one up is an improvement. There is plenty of room for one to be much, much worse.

ah Zod i was cheering after you said that... until i read this:

We will only get a new OC when Rivera is no longer the head coach.

I don't see him firing his own guys.

:/ dont ruin my hope that way man. I keep holding out hope that Rivera is smart enough to realize when something isnt working....

your response does make me curious though, do you think that the team will be able to shore up the appropriate holes to make Shula's style actually work next season? Do you think they can do it this season, maybe with a tweak in philosophy?

By his own statements, Rivera has been willing to listen to suggestions and make changes.  The whole 'Riverboat Ron' thing came about because he talked to players and asked what they thought.

Ya never know.

I dont like how Shula and the coaching staff have managed games with the personnel they have. It may be too soon to fire anyone but if this continues and the Panthers continue the losing streak or we finish the season poorly then changes need to be made. I have a feelin this team, staff, and management want and know they can reach the playoffs again especially after last season, especially since our division rivals are not looking hot either.

The problem with Ron firing Shula is that Ron himself approves the playbook and the strategy on gamedays. So firing Shula is also him admitting he isn't that great of a head coach.

I know some people would view it that way, but I would see it as giving himself the opportunity to get someone to improve the position. Making a bad personnel choice doesn't make you a bad head coach. I think holding on to him would be showing that he's not a great head coach.

This is eery.

In Tampa Bay GM Rich McKay stepped in and forced Dungy to fire Shula. Their relationship wasn't the same after that. I hope it doesn't come down to it.

Defensive head coaches like the "Limit the risks" offenses. The problem with this is, that some fans see it as too conservative. We throw the ball around too much to be totally conservative. And I for one like that we aren't all, air it out, like some teams.

There is a happy medium with us. The biggest problem right now, IMO, is we are not as disciplined as we were last year. For what ever reason, we just seem to make a poor decision, at the worst possible time. We seem to kill our own drives with silly mistakes, or extend the opponents drive with them.

Add to that the idea that Gman and Rivera may have thought the O-line would be better than it is. As last year progressed, the unit played pretty well. They must have been sure it could continue that progression. Unfortunately, that has not been the case. Amini has looked shaky, I/they were hoping for more. The same with Bell/Chandler. The hope was they could be consistent, and that is not the case either. Turner is still a work in progress. Which just puts the whole Offense in disarray.

To me, there are two reasons we are in the shape we are. The powers that be underestimated what our O-line would be. And the lack of discipline.

Man, I hate what a lousy 2 game losing streak can bring out in fans.

Personnel choices are just a tad inconsistent with Rivera on offense.

He's hit some home runs on the defensive side (or at least ground rule doubles) with guys like Eric Washington, Al Holcomb, Steve Wilks and even Sean McDermott.  And even on the offensive side he's got some strong people like Jim Skipper, Ricky Proehl and Pete Hoener, though it's worth remembering that neither Skipper nor proehl were his first choices for their respective spots.

For OCs, so far he's chosen Rob Chudzinski and Mike Shula, and while I'm not the Shula hater that many are, he wasn't my top choice either.

You never wanna tell a head coach that he can't pick his own staff, but when it comes to OCs...
