shula is a symptom, not the disease

If you think JR is the problem the good news is that by all accounts he's handed the keys to Gettleman. It will be interesting to see what happens to Rivera at the end of the year if things don't go well this season.

I think Rivera is a good coach, but I'm not sure if he has what it takes to get us to the promised land.

It's only fair to mention that Rivera is hampered by our cap situation as much as Gettleman. You can't expect him to make chicken salad out of chicken sh*t.

Rivera seems to give the OC a good deal of autonomy. If we can get a good one, we will start winning consistently. Shula is the weak link here.

Yeah, Shula can't block.

Getts played a calculated risk going new WR corp over oline and it ain't lookin' too pretty right now.

Rivera should have been given only a 1 year extension only to avoid the lame duck status.

And JR is a big part of the problem, change is apparently a real issue here in Carolina. Often ~ 2 years late to react.

I don't think he had much choice on the line situation. Honesty you could say its jerry or you could say we are still mostly in a Hurney era. Its going to take time to flush all the Hurney crap down to New Orleans.

Panthers fans have never had the experience of having a truly bad franchise owner. Don't assume the next one up is an improvement. There is plenty of room for one to be much, much worse.

seeing as how most of us were fans of the original hornets, i disagree.

and jerry may not be a bad franchise owner in your eyes, whatever that means, but he's the owner of a bad franchise!

You are referring to the team that won their division and made the playoffs last season?

We will only get a new OC when Rivera is no longer the head coach.

I don't see him firing his own guys.

Didn't he already though?

Rivera replaced a couple of position coaches previously, and I believe that was at his initiative.

(I don't count Steve Wilks replacing Ron Meeks because Rivera wanted Wilks from the beginning)

Granted those are position coaches, not coordinators.

I wouldn't characterize George Shinn as a bad owner, but he was a horny and dishonest bastard in the end.

And I don't see JR being that active in running the team.  He obviously cares about winning over money, as his GMs have always paid to the extent of the cap.  He fired his kids because he didn't like the way they were doing things.  But on the other hand, he has sent a message of "be loyal" to his GMs, which has resulted in a lot of players being kept past their prime and large contracts intended to keep players here for the remainder of their careers.  I think that we can agree on that.

In the past three years, we've seen Gamble, Gross, and Smitty treated like guys off the street by the new GM.  These are the best at their positions the franchise has ever seen.  While I have not been happy with that, it sort of puts the whole "loyal to a fault" idea to bed.  Richardson hired Gettleman and has clearly stepped back and given him the freedom to do his job.

So yeah, Shula may be a symptom of something, but it's not of a bad owner.
