Rivera: Panthers Tempted to Unleash Cam?

I say continually look for a solutions (in either your players, a scheme, an individual on the coaching staff, or someone else outside of it), instead of just accepting the fact that the OL and Shula sucks; almost conceding the season.

Isn't Rivera/Shula deciding the incorporate Cam's running ability back into the offense exactly what you want then?  It's a potential solution.

Isn't bringing in a new RB a potential solution?

I'm sure they've looked at O-lineman and if they were an upgrade, we would've signed.

In regards to Shula, I don't think he's great but it's obvious our team wants to run a conservative offense.  It's how we won 12 games last year.  He fits what they want to do.

And yes, I agree, arguing over NYG stats is pointless.

I have no problem with the Panther moves so far. And I look forward to what they do during the game (scheme).

However, I don't think/want Cam to be the solution for the run game, and I'm glad Rivera sounded as if he did not want to do that.

Let Cam do that stuff when he's fully healthy (being unleashed).

Yes, he can run when he has an open lane, or he knows he can scoot out of bounds. But because he's throwing so well right now (and still recovering); I would rather have the OC scheme a better plan, so he can continue to throw to his backs, WR's and TE's; mixed in with some runs when defenders are off guard.

I don't know why we can't keep it a nice balance for him as it's always been.

Why not give him 2-4 designed runs in the game but trust him to know when to stay in the pocket vs. escaping it (which is most of the time with this OL). It makes sense if he's still lingering over his injuries to tell him to stays pocket focused but if he's been able to be "unleashed", why the fug haven't we been doing so? At least give him 2-4 designed runs a game and be cool with him extending plays which doesn't always warrant a run.

Is rolling the QB out of the pocket against Coryell rules or is it relevant only to WCO's? We only have so many options within our scheme and all...

In my opinion, it can shift coordinator to coordinator and who implements aspects of different offenses.  I don't think we should necessarily restrict ourselves to the Coryell.  A good argument could be made we have players on this offense more suited for a Erhardt-Perkins variation in between Mike McCoy's offense and Pep Hamilton.

Why are some of you idiots blaming the offense for the last two games when the defense hasn't been able to stop a pee wee team? Are you guys just jumping on the opportunity to talk junk about this facet of the Panther's because they don't play like you think they should in Madden or are you actually watching the game and seeing the issue?

For those of you questioning why a head coach would tell his young QB to not take off and run so much is A. The kid is injured already and B. He would like to see him improve as a QB and become the best and most complete QB he can be? I go with C. All of the above.

Cam Newton has not been the Panthers' problem, and I refuse to let Rivera imply that he is. This "unleash Cam" nonsense is just coach speak for saying it's someone else's fault mainly, not his. No, Ron, if your first thought is trying to make Newton do more instead of fixing an o line that can't help you run or pass, then you're the main problem.

Don't dare try to set it up for Cam to be the reason you fail this year instead of you and Gettleman. Others may be stupid enough to buy it, but I'm not.

What would your Bears defense be doing to Carolina's current line, you fool? Cam would've been decapitated by you guys. That's how you should be thinking about it.

When the hell did Rivera ever imply that cam was the problem?

This is a joke. He's moving like a 40 year old out there. Anyone can see it. He can barely stand up after the huddle by the 3rd quarter of the last 2 games. I don't know what some of you guys are watching.

Two offseasons. We had the choice of Shula or Jackson and we went with Shula so he took the rb coach job in cincy

Actually there was another candidate as well although his name escapes me right now. The WCO guy out of Cleveland.

I don't think we even considered college coaches, and that seems kind of shortsighted.

Edit: Was it Eric Mangini?

    • I'd give it a C mainly because of Brooks.  If we just didn't have a 2nd I'd argue B to B+ tbh. Brooks was a bad gamble, tho one that could still pay off long term. Yes XL only has 400 yards but... Look who is throwing him the ball. And I think he isn't a "true #1" but he's been able to consistently get open. Hands definitely need to be cleaned up.  But he should end the year with 500-600 yards. Like you said - Sanders looks great.  Get him a better QB / more time with a QB and I think he's gonna impress. We added a couple rotational players on D that have both made plays and show promise for the future from later rounds. So I'd say, Brooks really hurts this drafts grade. It'll be interesting to see how it progresses over the next 3 years. I've overall really liked Morgan's FA acquisitions, so...
    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
    • We're in a great position to see just how big of a misstep it would be, having made so many ourselves
