I will definitely be hitting up the breweries! I am a huge fan of stouts and porters...so I would like to try them all  

 

As far as food..what's a good upscale place to eat?

Table is an upscale dinner restaurant that is pretty nice.  Biscuit Head is a nice spot for breakfast.  Tons of breweries to hit up.  No I don't think the Biltmore is worth the money.  Best way to spend a fall weekend in Asheville is to hit up the parkway and hike around a bit.

Asheville Ninja Porter won the Gold Medal at the 2014 World Beer Cup. Greenman has great dark beers, also.

Tupelo Honey is the best breakfast in town. Biscuit Head is also very good.

I stay at Aloft because they're super dog-friendly and right in the middle of everything. Actually have two nights booked the weekend before Thanksgiving. Love weekends in Asheville drinking and eating.

Nine mile is on montford and their food is soooooo good!! And lunch prices are great. Romans is good bet as well they are right downtown.Not really upscale places but the food at both are worth a look.

Sunset Terrance at the Grove Park Inn is a nice place to eat and they have amazing views. Try to plan dinner around sunset for the best views.

I know its been mentioned as over rated but its damn nice and I highly recommend it. Even if you don't stay there just go check it out for the amenities.

It's been said, but if you're brave enough, just wing it.  I know you want the security blanket of an itinerary, but being sporadic and mingling with randoms is what Asheville is all about.  Get a map of downtown, and have at it.  However, if you've never been to Biltmore, I'm sure you would have a good time, especially the wife.  So, at least do it once in your lifetime.  It's pricey, but not terribly more than your beer tour.
