Is there any chance at all that Shula will be fired soon?

We are seeing Cam throw the ball better than he's ever done, so why not utilise that? Long developing plays won't work with this O-line, so do something similar to what the Steelers did last week and take that out, be creative, short quick passing, probably even better for us because that negates the need for the deep threat WR

I don't think Shula is nearly as bad of an OC as people on this forum make him out to be.  Is he Bill Walsh?  Absolutely not.  But I think he is better than some people give him credit for.  He has his bad games but he has his strong ones too.

With that said, I do agree either we need to change the kind of players we bring on our offense or Shula absolutely has to go.  The issue with Shula is he is running an offense that doesn't suit us.  Like we saw several times last year, we are constantly trying to run a pass offense that relies on pushing the ball downfield consistently.  It works when you have Steve Smith at his absolute peak (2011; this as far as when he was with Carolina though because he is clearly putting far more effort with Baltimore this year) and two killer tight ends in Shockey and Olsen.  It works when you have a quarterback who can escape an incredible amount of sacks and make throws very few others in the NFL can make due to his arm strength and velocity.  But we don't have that kind of personnel right now.  Benjamin is the only player you could argue capable of making plays downfield and that is strictly due to his size and jump-ball skills.  Cotchery and Avant are old and slow.  They are not bad players, but they are scheme reliant players.

We are trying to push the ball downfield when Chandler and Bell are our starting OTs.  Chandler and Bell are the two worst starting offensive tackles in the NFL.  We have 'em both.  We have begun to ask our WRs to run shorter routes, but that isn't the offense Shula likes or desires so it ends up looking like a mess.  If we want to rely on bigger, possession receivers like Benjamin, Cotchery, and Avant, that is fine.  But Shula cannot be the OC for it to work in my opinion.  And now that we can't rely on controlling the clock like we did last year because our running game somehow, someway got even worse (and it was bad last year too if we are being honest), it has been exposed.

This is the main reason. The OL

So we just need and OC that can mix it up; keep the defense off balance, then throw downfield when they don't expect it.

This is done every week in the NFL by professional OC's.

Did you not see Benjamin beat his defender for a TD?

He's not just a "possession" WR. Plus, he has a high YPC average, which disputes this.

Nonetheless, good post.

This is where HC lose or keep their jobs. Making tough decisions and learning this is about winning not loyalty

Getting rid of Shula is really getting rid of our offensive philosophy and the mistake made to treat Cam like he's some game manager. If we hired Ramsdell just to be a damn assistant that sits and watch as our OC calls draw play on 3rd and 7 how can you not look at Rivera job security? What else causing you to not look at it? One winning season in 3 years? Its not like we got Bill Belichick here

True, but with the personnel, I don't think it's enough to match what the defense is giving up.

i hear you. but i think this defense has been exposed. dont give them time to get to your QB, and you beat the Carolina defense. there is not much we can do about that because the problem still lies in having a weak secondary.

however, i do think we could keep up with anyone in the league with scoring if the coaching staff would change philosophy and if the players would stop getting in their own way. it may not be a quick strike offense, but a tweak in philosophy could produce a much more effective pass-first offense... our biggest issue on offense, aside from the run game, is drives stalling out because our OC finds it amusing to run the ball twice in the redzone with a 4th string RB and a makeshift OL.

This was the most bemoaning part of the game.

Because the media told him to run, Shula kept running with a 4th string RB; over and over again it seemed; even in the second half; even with the team behind 18 pts. What!?

The group of receivers the Panthers have this year, are better than in Cam's rookie year. And the better receivers, offset Shockey as the other TE.

Meanwhile Cam appears much better, but the OL sucks (along with the RB's, who were at least average in 2011). So that's where you're OC comes in.

Look at the Giants. Their OL and RB's sucked the past several seasons. However, they have a new OC, who's had an impact on how defenses play them, and ultimately how the Giants score points.

There may be other big problems on this team, indeed. But Shula sure isn't helping either.

Speaking about an OC's affect: Riddle me this Huddler's

Minnesota lost the starting QB from last year; lost their all world RB, and are starting a rookie QB as a replacement; and guess what?

They're scoring 30 pts right now. Yes it's the suck Falcunts. But still. Baltimore wasn't any world beaters on defense either.

Yep, coaching will take an 8-8 team and make them 11-5 and get into the playoffs.

It can also take an 8-8 team and get them 5 wins.  Coaching is paramount to the team.  Coaching is what allows weaknesses to be covered and strengths to be exploited.  Coaching is what motivates the players.  Coaching is what keeps players disciplined and not making bone-headed penalties.  Coaching is making sure the correct number of players are on the field.

Rivera/Shula need to go.  I've said Rivera needs to go for 3 years, although he did get a reprieve last year when he utterly changed his game plan and he had a healthy Newton to bail him out week after week.

Now...I just want a good HC.

he should never have been given the job.

they have the guy who should have the job on staff right now. they need to either move from shula to ramsdell or they are looking at another .500 at best season.

the defense needs some help from the other side of the ball and we can't get by on just cam's talent. we ned someone who can take advantage of it and get the most out of who we have rather than someone whose whole career has been bottom of the barrel offenses.

if it weren't for shula's last name, he wouldn't have had a job in the league.

if you want some encouragement for firing him, look at what the teams he was responsible for play calling and see how well they fared after he was fired.

Rivera would never make that move, unfortunately!
