Dave Gettleman?

The only serious problem I had with Gettleman so far is the disregard for the O-line.

When he was first hired, he said that it would take about two years for him to start doing what he wants to do. This offseason will be his 3rd offseason and I will ramp up judgement then.

Yall need to calm down. We're still building. He's even said it, we're still getting all the salary cap stuff fixed from hurney.. Last year was just a great year.. How can you completely dismiss what he did last year by 2 bad games this year? 2 weeks ago you were fine with this roster... No matter what you guys always go back to doubting gettleman.. I believe in him building a championship team takes time. For him to have put a contending team together last year was amazing. Give the guy some credit. It takes time to build contenders, expecially when you don't have money...

In order to develop that consistency you have to rid yourselves of the stuff that made you inconsistent and the contract situations make it difficult to move on.

Literally every move made this offseason signaled a rebuild, then when all of a sudden this team starts looking like a rebuild people flip out. I don't get it.

Week to week consistency is an issue for alot of teams this year. Look at Pittsburgh. Atlanta. Washington and Kirk Cousins. That's what happens in a league designed to make everyone 8-8.

The lesson learned here is not that Gettleman screwed up. It's that we as fans screwed up by punching our tickets to Santa Clara after Week 2.

Great post.  Last year was a rebuild.  We just happened to go 12-4.  I've said it before but in some ways our success last year gives people a false idea of where this team is at.

Ladies and gentleman, here is an example of Gettleman fans (jk)

While the Gettle detractors provide actual reasons for why they dislike him, a Gettleman "supporter" comes in and rudely insults someone just speaking their opinion while providing absolutely no knowledgable insight. Says a lot...

The "detractors" might provide actual reasons but they very rarely give practical fixes to those problems.  It is easy to say we should have signed a top tier tackle, a quality safety, and kept Steve Smith but when you put pen to paper the numbers just don't work.  Especially if you are trying to build the team for long term success.  In a lot of ways the "supporters" have a more realistic view of the roster and cap.

It is easy to sit back and second guess.  Do I wish we would have took Hurst in the sixth round instead of a running back?  I do now.  Am I glad we took KB instead of reaching for an OT like Kouandjio?  Very much so.

You have to look at a GM by the totality of their work.  The fact is the draft has more failures then successes, this is true for every team.  Overall I think he has does very well in the draft.  With that being said I think you have to give a draft class a few years to truly grade it.

As far as free agents go he has done a good job overall of finding productive players at bargain prices.  He hasn't yet spent money on top tier free agents.

With the new CBA most teams are comprised of 3 types of players:

Young players on rookie contracts.  Example:Star and KB

Cheaper short term players.  Often veterans. - Example: Cotchery

High dollar players on second or third contracts.  These contracts are usually longer term.  Example:  CJ or Stewart.

DG has done a very good job with the first 2 groups.  He inherited the third group.  The third group should be the "sure bet".  Those players have usually built a substantial resume by the time they sign a big contract.  These players are the easiest to project but if they get hurt or underperform they hurt the team the most.

In theory with the salary cap all teams should be getting close to the same production out of their "high dollar" players.  The difference among teams is going to be the ones that can find "cheap' talent (either rookies or cheap FAs).  So far DG has done a good job in this area.  I hope he gets the chance to pick his expensive players at some point.

How is questioning Gettleman a stupid thread? Because you don't like it?

He is the reason we are getting blown out for the second game in a row and why our franchise QB is getting beat to a pulp every week while the best player in our franchise's history lights us up for the Ravens benefit.

Is he also the reason Greg hardy got in an altercation? Is he the reason out top 4 backs are hurt? Is he the reason Thomas Davis is also out? Is he the reason cam messed up his ribs? We're still rebuilding. You guys expect him to build a championship team in a year. That's ridiculous. Every team has ups and downs. But ultimately we're still rebuilding.

Anyone who thinks that Gettleman has done a bad job as the GM of this team is a "win now" type "fan".

Let's play a little game, and I will allow all of you bashers in this thread to participate:

What exactly would you have done differently if you were the GM of the Panthers over the past two seasons?  Specifically, and I'm giving you the ability to have 20/20 hindsight?

If you are going to bash the man, at least take the time to research every move he has made, and post how you would have handled the situation differently and how exactly that would make us a better team last year, this year, and for the next 5 years.

He's not incompetent, he doesn't need to be fired or any silliness like that. He's done a fine job so far, but he has not been without his mistakes. He is not infallible. There is a difference between being cautious and asking questions versus just immediately calling for his head.

Anyone who has been on this forum for years knows that as much utter hatred as Hurney's name receives here these days, it wasn't that long ago that this board was full of homers who praised his moves even when they were questionable. It's really not any different with Gettleman.

In the draft alone:

  • Just say no to Kugbila, especially in the fourth round
  • Not doubled up on DT when we had much more pressing needs
  • Not drafted an undersized DE in the second round
  • Taken an OT at any point in the draft this year
  • Taken an OT at any point in the draft last year
  • Taken a WR in the draft last year

I don't even need hindsight for that. I said it at the time.

You aren't being specific.  You have to say who you would have taken in those exact spots.

The easiest thing to do right now is pile on Gettleman. Oh Steve Smith had a great game against us yesterday so that negates the fact that Gettleman has spent the last 30 years building winning franchises.

Gettleman's a lot different than Marty Hurney, but Marty Hurney's contracts are still costing this team a great deal. Not only that, but this offseason has been harsh on the Panthers. We lost a franchise left tackle. Our best defensive lineman we're also paying out the ass on a franchise tag is gone due to extenuating circumstances. The cap accelerated a poo ton and we were still barely able to scrape by because of the backloaded contracts Hurney signed. Now, players are dropping like flies on the field and the team is feeling the effects. Last year we really didn't have an issue with injuries. Our franchise QB is still not fully recovered from injuries and surgeries before the season and he's constantly being chased down after the snap because we've got a serviceable right tackle at best protecting his blindside, and a defensive tackle protecting the other side. There's no money opening up and holes are forming and you can't just create cap out of nothingness.

Gettleman told us it was going to be a long road ahead when we took him on board. When somebody with his experience in the administration aspect says that, it gives you an idea of just how far behind a bad GM like Hurney can set you.
