Dave Gettleman?

It is really funny to me that people don't mention the salary cap that he inherited and is STILL fighting when they bad mouth him.  It is as if he can summon players from the clouds like Jennifer Lawrence nudies.

i can buy the hardy thing at least.  that $13 million would be nice to have.

but there was literally not a single person on this site who, back when he was originally tagged, said "this is a bad idea because he's going to be convicted of misdemeanor assault on a female and something unrelated happening to another player will cause a PR crisis for the NFL and he'll be suspended to contain the fallout!"

of course there were people who endorsed letting him walk into free agency for a variety of reasons, so i'm not going to sell them short.  however what he brings to the table as a dominant pass rusher + shitwrecking DE against the run is so sorely and obviously missed now that i think we'd be losing 31-38 and we'd still be screwed if we had landed anthony collins, drafted allen robinson in the second, and brought in henderson or hurst as UDFAs/late round picks.

We took Bell the weakest link on the line last year, and made him our starting LT. That's not salary cap. That's incompetence.

Most of us here that pay attention to the whole picture get tired of this talk, hit us with exact details of how exactly you would have handled this situation.

I actually did say that back then.

The post got deleted though.

People would have gone apocalyptic if Hardy simply walked in free agency...

Gettleman didn't show enough urgency in regards to the Oline and Safety position. To be fair he had limited resources in FA but should've done better in the draft.

That said many of our players are under performing. He's not to blame for that.

Done better in the draft? This is probably one of the best drafts we ever had. We got our number 1 WR, value picks of Ealy and Turner, and late rd pick Bene. What are you expecting 4 out of the 7 picks to start? You do realize if you compare all 32 NFL team's draft there is only like 1 or 2 guys starting.

The easiest thing to do right now is pile on Gettleman. Oh Steve Smith had a great game against us yesterday so that negates the fact that Gettleman has spent the last 30 years building winning franchises.

Gettleman's a lot different than Marty Hurney, but Marty Hurney's contracts are still costing this team a great deal. Not only that, but this offseason has been harsh on the Panthers. We lost a franchise left tackle. Our best defensive lineman we're also paying out the ass on a franchise tag is gone due to extenuating circumstances. The cap accelerated a poo ton and we were still barely able to scrape by because of the backloaded contracts Hurney signed. Now, players are dropping like flies on the field and the team is feeling the effects. Last year we really didn't have an issue with injuries. Our franchise QB is still not fully recovered from injuries and surgeries before the season and he's constantly being chased down after the snap because we've got a serviceable right tackle at best protecting his blindside, and a defensive tackle protecting the other side. There's no money opening up and holes are forming and you can't just create cap out of nothingness.

Gettleman told us it was going to be a long road ahead when we took him on board. When somebody with his experience in the administration aspect says that, it gives you an idea of just how far behind a bad GM like Hurney can set you.

1. Actually people have been calling for offensive line help since well before the season started, so nothing they're saying now is new. Likewise, Gettleman was ripped when Steve was let go, so people's frustration there is also understandable after Sunday, when he clearly still has tread remaining.

2. Gettleman has never been "the guy," so slow down on the "building winning franchises" nonsense. He was a part of the organization, but he wasn't the guy. Crediting him with "building" those "franchises" is like crediting Bill Cartwright or Luke Longley for the Bulls' NBA titles.

3. Gettleman's makeshift line is going to get Cam destroyed. Maybe that's his goal for a QB he doesn't actually believe in anyway (cough, 7 second pause, cough). Protecting Cam is clearly not a priority of Dave's.

My only issue with Gettleman is his utter disregard for protecting his starting QB. Not trying to find an actual starting caliber LT is literally "gross negligence."

I have been a D.G supporter and I remain so. He spent the money he had to ensure the defense could carry this team this year. He didn't bank on Hardy being a numbskull. He upgraded the WR corps with pennies. Cam not being 100% into week four could not be forseen. All the running backs taking a dive could not be forseen, even with this oline. Some teams only run one back 80% of the time behind inferior lines, and they keep on going.

If the defense had panned out, then this offense could have been enough to win. When the defense gives up 30 point's a game,it isn't going to work.

If you want to blame anyone, blame Hardy and the offensive play calling. Hardy for being a dirt bag and costing the defense and the OC for not ensuring that the play calling makes up for the Oline. D.G DIDN'T have enough scratch to make the changes needed this year in every area.

The thinking must have been we can get enough done this year with this offense and oline (and a dominant defense) to be competitive.

I hope someone will soon be putting a boot up Shula's ass to change up the play calling to best fit the personal. That's up to Rivera to make that call. I believe that the GM knows more about football then anyone on here will ever know.

A minor detail to most huddlers....

Actually just because a bunch of fans wanted a position addressed but have no idea of the logistics behind making it happen amounts to jackshit in the eyes of a GM, generally speaking. Fans get to sit on their chairs and go, we need this, we should get this, also we need to draft this guy, and then they forget about it during the offseason, while the guy actually in charge is most certainly pondering what to do for hours a day while all this dead money is sitting there unable to be used. There is no one team that gets to fill every single position in free agency with a blue chip free agent. It's no surprise Panther fans are still up in arms, because one position we didn't fill is hurting us, just like I'm sure Pats fans are sitting around complaining about how they traded away Logan Mankins for Tim Wright and he's not getting the job done, just like any other .500 team's fans are complaining that every hole on their team couldn't be filled

2. Gettleman has never been "the guy," so slow down on the "building winning franchises" nonsense. He was a part of the organization, but he wasn't the guy. Crediting him with "building" those "franchises" is like crediting Bill Cartwright or Luke Longley for the Bulls' NBA titles.

You call it nonsense, I call it stuff I've read on because I actually do research. Gettleman is revered by all of his peers in the industry. He's also actively scouted opponents during the season even though that was never necessarily a part of his job. The guy evaluated every free agent for Jerry Reese when the Giants were one of the best teams in the NFL for years. Ozzie Newsome wasn't "the guy" anywhere before he became GM of the Ravens either. Before that he was an executive helping build a winning team just like Gettleman was. Ditto for John Schneider, Ted Thompson, and Jerry Reese.

3. Gettleman's makeshift line is going to get came destroyed. Maybe that's his goal for a QB he doesn't actually believe in anyway (cough, 7 second pause, cough). Protecting Cam is clearly not a priority of Dave's.

*cough* conspiracy theories ahoy *cough*

Thinkaboutit, here's the deal. Stop quoting me to have a conversation over this. Actually, that goes for anybody discontent over Gettleman's handling of anything. I don't want to come on here and address conspiracy theories against our QB, and go over the same points with 50 different people, and reiterate common knowledge. I really don't give a poo how many yards Smith has, or some 7th round left tackle that played his first game and didn't look terrible, or how the one guy we were able to afford to bring in is struggling because he's not very talented/worthless in run support/has jock itch.

Gettleman's a guy who came in and got a team that couldn't win for poo since 2008 and helped patch them up into a 12-4 division winner. We're still 2-2 and that's the best start we've had in years. The panthers have always seemed to trend upward later in the season so we'll see where this goes. I support the guy and understand the tough decisions he has to make, which contrasts with the convenience of a million huddle posters who look smart talking about every player they would've brought in and vilifying the guy in charge over every single perceived oversight. I don't care how many late round or UDFAs you people have to throw in my face, or what free agent any random one of you happened to like that got brought on another team and is doing decent work. Quote somebody else who has more time on their hands.

You realize that at least 80%+ (90%+ some years) of 6th rounders are complete busts meaning they get cut before their rookie contract is even up. The ones that do work out are usually backups or STers. Getting a starter in the 6th or later is rare and even then they usually aren't ready to start right away. There are plenty of years where there's not a single immediate starter in the entire 6th round out of ~40 picks. Seriously you guys look pretty foolish complaining that we didn't land a day 1 starter in the 6th round, at a specific and premium position no less.

Like I said, which some of you seem to not get, is that I am not arguing whether or not Hurst would have started. I am arguing with the rationale behind drafting another RB as opposed to drafting an LT that was graded higher.  It's as simple as that. I said it then, I'm saying it now.  No one in their right mind would say with any surety that Hurst or any draft pick in the sixth round would be a day one starter. That's not the issue as far as I'm concerned. The issue (as with most draft picks) is the rationale behind the pick.

Good argument.  I argued that his sacks came in bunches vs. weak sisters and that he was not consistent or elite.  I guess I look at what Hurney would have done--he would have signed Hardy to a $65m deal.  I honestly think he felt that high salaries validated his draft picks.   Hardy was a great pick, I give him that.

Gettlemen giving Hardy $13m for this year was a sign that there was something about him that scared them.

I wanted Hurst in the 4th round.  I cannot figure that situation out at all.

We drafted 0 OTs in his 2 drafts so far even though it has been a weakness since day 1.

That's my only gripe with Gettleman's draft. Guess I should have specified.
