Dave Gettleman?

Recommended Posts

His draft record so far has been phenomenal. 6 starters and one nickel back out of 11 draft picks.

Looks like he's going to be 5 for 5 on all his picks in the first 3 rounds. Trai Turner has graded out as our best OLineman so far this season. Ealy has been our 2nd best DLineman, behind Short, his other 2nd rounder. Star was in the running for DROY for most of his rookie year and now Benjamin is in the running for OROY.

I'm not sure people realize just how insanely good this is compared to the league average. The jury is still out on Boston and yes, he whiffed on a few late round picks (Kugbila, Barner, Gaffney). It happens. Even so his success over the last 2 years in the draft is easily top 10 if not top 5 in the league.

The most common gripes I've seen are that we didn't get a day 1 starter franchise left tackle in the 6th round or as an UDFA, which is laughable. Or that we didn't bring in an OT in free agency, even though the biggest contract offer he made was to one of the top free agent OTs (he just chose to sign elsewhere). Or keeping Hardy on the team (one of the few elite players on the roster and in case you haven't been paying attention someone we REALLY need) because of things that happened after he was tagged that nobody in the world could foresee.

Ditto.

I'm not a GM. My livelihood has had nothing to do with football. I'm a fan.

So no, I'm not able to point to a specific move Gettleman could have made to strengthen our tackle situation. But you will never convince me that we couldn't do better than Bell (at least at LT) and Chandler.

Fair enough.

You beat me to the punch, but I was going to say, I want to make it clear that although I hated the Smitty release and am not a fan of a lot of the moves he made this offseason, I am not saying that Gettleman is the lone, sole reason that we are sucking right now or have issues. I certainly think he contributed to it because several gambles backfired and yesterday was a prime example and really embarrassing. BUT, we aren't privy to a lot that goes on behind closed doors and I acknowledge that. But, it irks me to see some sticking up for him to no end as though every move he has made was complete gold and infallible, when in fact, thus far it has proven not to be. He's done some good as well... Ultimately, I feel he's not as great as some are convinced he has been, and he's not as bad as others have portrayed him to be, and really, we won't know either way until 3-5 years into his tenure.

I just hope we can turn this ship around this week and get things right.

The fact of the matter is when you play the one year contract game to fill roster vacancies, sometimes it will work and sometimes it will backfire. Last year it worked really well. This year is yet to be determined. But we can't underestimate the cap situation Nippleshorts inherited and is trying to navigate. Honestly, last seasons success was the worst thing that could happen to a GM trying to rebuild a shitty cap situation. 12-4 set expectations through the roof this season after one year of trying to right the ship. He has said from day one this is going to be a process.

The fact of the matter is, as bad as our options at LT appeared, as opposed to taking a flier on a guy that some scouts had graded as a second or third round pick, we drafted an RB who probably would have been a UDFA himself when we already had strength at the position (and let's not argue about the status of the RB corps today because hindsight is always 20/20).

No one knows how a player will work out when it comes time, but a fool could really see that Bell and Chandler weren't the answer to protect Cam's blind side.  As such, Hurst was the more logical choice because if he pans out you gain a lot and don't really lose much. What's laughable is that now Hurst is starting and the FO didn't even value Gaffney enough to protect him from the likes of Belichick.

I don't typically express it on the huddle but I just hated how the Smith situation went down. It just seemed both Rivera and DG simply didn't want him here..so they released the best WR in our franchise's history.

Add in the Ealy pick (I'm not saying he's a bust) but there should be a balance between picking priorities v. BPA and DG seems just stubborn at times. The stubbornness even comes out at his press conferences.

Then add in the assemblage of the current O-Line after all of this annoying hog molly talk

And the other thing is the safety position. I just didn't and still don't understand why Harper is here. Just a bad pickup.

I'm cool with everything else given the situation he was given coming in but as things move forward, it becomes more and more of a DG/Rivera team and it's not trending well right now.

I tell you what, after hearing that Ron made a personal trip to the Ravens locker room to thank Steve Smith for everything he's done, I believe this was one man throwing a fit and eventually getting his way. I have a feeling Gettleman does a lot of poo Ron doesn't agree with. We joke about Ron being over his head, but I think we should look higher.

Just think of how good Hurney must be then for his 2012 draft with soon to be 5 starters, Luke, Amini, Alexander, Norman, Nortman!

Right now our second and third round picks from this year are just rotational players, our fourth rounder has been M.I.A., but for some reason isn't on IR, and our fifth rounder is at least seeing the field as our new nickel. Then there's our sixth round pick playing for New England, and our seventh is of course traded. So it's okay, I guess, but I would have imagined before the draft last year we would have seen our second and third round selections starting with as many holes as we had going into the draft.

That draft overall is looking pretty meh TBH. Luke really saves the draft being a great pick, DROY and DPOY.

Everyone was hoping Amini would lock down the LG spot this year but he's been nearly as bad as Bell and Chandler. He's been completely outplayed by the "just rotational player" Trai Turner, a rookie 3rd rounder. Pretty bad for a guy that was a really high 2nd rounder now in his 3rd season. I still wish we would have taken Cordy Glenn instead but oh well.

We traded a future 3rd for Alexander (that could have been used on Keenan Allen) so that's more than just 2012 picks used, and he's really not given us much thus far. Barely played last year and has been suspended so far this year. Hopefully he can give us something when he comes back because we really need him with CJ doing nothing and Hardy gone.

Norman and Nortman... lol yeah ok

So far there's only one player proven that they're starting caliber (Luke), yeah sorry I'm not counting punters lol That's a pretty standard Hurney draft, very good in the 1st, anywhere from average to horrible everywhere else. If you can't see that Gettleman's drafts have been significantly better then you're not paying attention.

You realize that at least 80%+ (90%+ some years) of 6th rounders are complete busts meaning they get cut before their rookie contract is even up. The ones that do work out are usually backups or STers. Getting a starter in the 6th or later is rare and even then they usually aren't ready to start right away. There are plenty of years where there's not a single immediate starter in the entire 6th round out of ~40 picks. Seriously you guys look pretty foolish complaining that we didn't land a day 1 starter in the 6th round, at a specific and premium position no less.

All I'm doing is showing you how comparable the drafts our. Out of this draft we have one solid player, two and a pick that haven't seen the field, and two players that are rotational and haven't proven anything.

Yeah, I think yesterday was another example of that as well with Rivera saying Poole played a great game and he was released 6 hours later, lol.
