NFL Teams graded on 5 year potential

I know it's been beat like a dead horse now, but imagine if Hurney didn't overpay all these guys. We'd be that much better

While true in an ideal world, Hurney's ineptitude also lead to us getting the GOAT with the #1 pick in 2011. And to his credit, he took him, as well as the greatest MLB of a generation. Can never forget that too. Star and KB would likely be in the top 5 of any redraft of the last two years as well.

The difference is we will be paying our playmakers. Right now our best players are on poo contracts and the people getting paid a lot are out or aren't performing, not to mention overpaid. That will make a huge difference as long as Gettle keeps up being able to field guys who ball out on their value rookie/FA contracts.

And the similarity is those playmakers will still be on the team, but they'll be making the big bucks now.  Pretty much just Cam's contract alone - especially since mega bucks are the norm for franchise QBs nowadays - is going to void any money we get back off of Stew/D-Will/Big Money/Beason/Hardy's contracts.  Once again, we also have Luke, Star, KK, and then Benjamin looming right after.

It's not doom and gloom by any means... but it is going to be virtually the same situation we're in now.

Let's just hope Gettleman continues to knock the draft/UDFA and bargain bin FA signings out the park.

Everyone keeps saying "once we get out of cap hell" and while it's nice to think about... the reality is "once we get out of cap hell" we're going to be paying guys like Cam and Luke, and then there's Star and KK right after that. Our cap situation is going to be more of a lateral move more than anything.

I hate to say it, but similar to the 49ers with Kap, and Seahawks with Wilson, our best window to build a juggernaut was during Cam's rookie contract. Now that's not so bad, because we see that we can actually have a good team around Cam with money limitations... it just sucks to think we could've really had something special had it not been for some of those contracts and flat out bad luck though.

Either way, we should be competing for a long time.

The difference is we will be investing in players that can produce at a high level for years to come and positions of importance.

Also, we will have to see how these contracts are structured because dlo and especially Stewarts are disastrous.

Edit: just saw lumps say the same thing.

Draft will be essential

And once again, the end result will still be the same.  A very large amount of our cap is going to be tied up to Cam/Luke/Star/KK/KB once they're off their rookie contracts.  Yeah, they will (hopefully) be producing, but like I said, it'll be a lateral move cap-wise more than anything.  As we get the Beason/Stew/D-Will/Hardy money rolling in it's going to be transferred straight to Cam and Luke.  TD is currently on a rather team-friendly deal coming off that 3rd ACL tear as well IIRC.

As long as we continue to draft well and get the most bang for our buck in FA acquisitions then the team should continue to rise no problem.  If not and we sort of plateau out, then it's not all bad, seeing as we've already went 12-4 and still look to be a good team this year even with injuries, missing players, and cap issues.

All I was saying is we missed probably our best shot to put together a real juggernaut of a team due to all those shitty contracts.  Players of Cam and Luke's caliber on that cheap of a deal is a window you rarely - hell, never - get in the NFL.

Seattle also struck gold, but they didn't have all the baggage weighing them down and they went all the way with potential dynasty talk.

I agree but that's what dg is for. Gotta draft and sign vets that can produce. I understand what you're saying but think of who we are paying right now to not be on this team. That in and of itself will free up money more money than anybody thinks.

The point is we would be using that money usefully. It's not like we would be begging to use that money elsewhere like we are at this moment with the rb situation. If we had that dead money back we could have gotten line help. We are dirt fuging poor right now

I think if you look at what Gettleman is doing, he is definitely building the team to make a Super Bowl run over the next 1-3+ years. I'm sure we are good enough to have a small, small chance of going all the way this year, but we are definitely not setup to be in our prime this year.

Next year we start to come out of cap hell as G-man himself has said. If you think we are good now, we are about to be really good the next few seasons.

Yeah Hurney was pretty good with his first round draft picks, when he did trade them away that is. But yeah he has helped this franchise more than he has hurt it and I'll give him props for that.
