The Identity Of Our Offense

I was listening to Greg Cossel do an interview on the Mac Attack today and he was talking about the Kubiak system as if it were a biscuit recipe. All of the ingredients were clearly defined the order of operations tried and true.

And Jim did a great job jumping in with the important question, "what is the Identity of Mike Shula's offense?". Greg had a short pause and stumbled with his words a little before saying it's hard to answer that. The Panthers running game is part traditional with the power run and part read option. The passing attack is more Mike Martz and Air Coryell.

Now these are all things we've known but to see someone with no bias towards our organization decipher that based off the film was striking to me. And the name Mike Martz rang a bell with me specifically.

We all know Mike Martz as the offensive mind behind the greatest show on turf. We also know the Panthers have brought in John Ramsdell who was an assistant on those teams. Then we have Ricky Proehl who was a big part of those Rams teams.

So we have a traditional/read option run game combined with an Air Coryell passing attack all of this is led by a traditional power run coordinator. The Panthers are clearly aware this is a problem and they are trying to fix it by giving Shula a passing tutor in John Ramsdell. You have to admit, our passing attack has improved. We are putting up high completion numbers for good yardage and touchdowns. But we are also dysfunctional in pass protection and run blocking.

This begs the question. Are we tipping the defense by merging three offenses into one? Are we confusing our young offensive line by mixing offenses. If Kubiak's play book makes biscuits. Ours makes a bacon, pepper, ham, and tuna omelette. But we read the directions wrong and ended up with scrambled eggs.

At what point do we simplify things by running one offense with one expert? This is pro football, offensive coordinators that need help learning the passing game shouldn't even exist.

I heard the same interview. To me it sounded like the disconnect was not between the run game and passing game, but the fact that we alternate between two different running attacks. One being a base set power run game and the other a shotgun read option. He thought we should use more base set running plays based on what has worked this year.

I would also add in we try to do too much in the passing game too.  Sometimes there's quick passes, then long developing plays with no safety for Cam.  Shula needs to hunker down call some quick passes and screens out of the two TE sets, get some misdirection going in the run game and give Cam a safety valve on long developing pass plays.  The explosive plays come when the defense is on their heels.  Our offense is inconsistent because Shula seems to be throwing darts instead of running plays that flow well together.

    • 100% even if rest of team is really talented if they march young out to be qb and he plays like he has for 90% of his starts the panthers have already lost doesnt even matter how good the rest of the team is or isnt and also makes it hard to even tell how good they are.  They need true competition for young this offseason.
    • It will be awesome to have an improved stadium to lose in I guess....   https://www.yahoo.com/news/panthers-file-rezoning-bank-america-111500840.html     The Carolina Panthers have taken another necessary step toward renovating their home of the present and future. Panthers Stadium, LLC, filed its rezoning site plan with the city of Charlotte on Monday, initiating an important — if mostly technical — step toward renovating Bank of America Stadium. The filings state that the rezoning relates “primarily to technical aspects associated with improvements to Bank of America Stadium,” and that the rezoning is required because “the current stadium zoning is out of date” for the team’s stadium renovation plans.   The planned stadium updates include new seats installed throughout the upper and lower bowls; stadium safety and security enhancements; a reimagined South Lawn Pavilion; upgraded restrooms; exterior enhancements (including LED video boards) and more. Planning for the stadium renovation project will continue through 2025, with construction starting in 2026 and the renovation’s conclusion in 2029, The Observer previously reported.
    • In my dream, we somehow luck into a top 2 pick and someone wants a QB bad and doesn’t want anyone else to jump them. Somehow we’ll probably screw up the picks anyway, but it would be nice to do even partially what Chicago did to us. We’d have to lose out, which is a decent possibility unless Tampa is resting. We need Atlanta to stay within a game because Atlanta beat Tampa twice. The rest of the draft slots are who knows because Jax plays the Raiders and then Tennessee and you never know who will rest starters. I think we are top 7 unless we somehow pull out 2 more wins. The 4 win teams have higher SOS and there is only one 5 win team with the same SOS. If we win 1 of 3, we still should stay in top 7. If we lose out and the Jax games work for us, we can easily be top 3.
