89 Conference Call

Actually it is the opposite. 89 is some dude who played WR here....at an incredible level years ago.

But I have no emotional attachment to him. Players come and go.

You seem to be struggling with him going

yes it is emotional just the other way. I do not struggle with SS I know exactly how I feel about him and what happened. I struggle with G-man.

The standard routine type behavior doesn't negate his negative aspects. Name a Panther vet that doesn't do what you just boasted about 89 doing positive. The absurd stuff he does is what makes him different than say a Kalil, Davis, etc.

It really is simple. Was 89 a headache in Carolina? The answer is simple and easy. Not sure why you want to argue that simplistic thing

he was not a headache in fact he was quite calm the last few years. The only headaches he caused was to the opposition with a simple punch as he ran by.Those were good things. the whole negative spin is from days gone by and not applicable to the present nor the not too distant past when he was cut.

Blah blah blah.   I am not going to get into an argument on semantics of what "breakaway" means because it's useless.  But compare Cotchery's production to Smith's production, as well as game tape, and there is a stark difference.  But that's really not the point, which is Smitty is still getting it done, however he is doing it.

I know I'm late to the party here.

But I think you're missing the whole point about Chemistry.

When Steve Smith was all world, the Panthers put up with his shenanigans.

However, now that he's just a average to good NFL receiver, they don't want him around at his price$ with their young 1st rd receiver and QB they want to build with. Look at Julio Jones and Roddy Wright? Just listen to Cotchery and Avant talk about helping the other receivers. It's as much unit camaraderie, as their actual help.

You're right! It's not Steve Smith Job to develop receivers. Absolutely not. Just like it isn't for one sales person to help another on his job. However, the "team player", at the Job, just like with the Panthers, will usually the one to get the promotion, and/or be recognized. You reap what you sew (politics or not).

So far in 2014 both Greg Olsen and KB are matching Steve Smith's production with less targets.

Just saying

I have a sneaky suspicion, as the year progresses, KB's and Olsen's numbers will be even better, and Steve Smith's will decline.

I also feel KB will have a better game tomorrow against the Ravens, than Smith will have against the Panthers.

We'll see?

Jeremy is correct about some of the players' opinions, no doubt.  But just like I told Jeremy in another thread  several days ago, there's no way that you're telling me that everyone in the locker room was against Smith. Anyone that has enough life experience knows that there were people who were shocked that Smith got axed and, if nothing else, were privately in disagreement with how everything went down with his release.

I just think most players didn't care, since he wasn't really friends with them.

What's so hard to understand?

You can have a great salesman at your job who did great, but mostly kept to himself. Then he gets canned. You may personally ask "why", and even talk about it with co-workers. But it's not something that would make you angry; cause you were never close with him.

Now, make that person a dick, slipping in sales and ability, along with being a malcontent on many occasions, and  you really won't care or express your disapproval of his release. Think about it?

You keep looking at things from YOUR perspective. However, try to look at it from managements perspective?

GMan has hit on his draft picks

GMan has hit on his cheap bandaid FA

GMan is getting us out of cap hell

89 is the greatest player in franchise history....and when he was cut our WR corp is no worse than when he was last here.

I was a BIG Gman critic when he got here. Too much praise for not enough proof. Dude has earned some praise now.

Now, does the Yankee handle everything the way we down here are use to? No. We could of parted with 89 in a better way. He deserved it....and I think 89 takes issue with GMan. But it is business and GMan is overall doing us right

Per you he wasn't.

Per players, per 89 himself, per the reporters who have covered him for over a decade, per insiders.....he was a headache.

There is no new negative 89 spin. He was always a headache. He was our dude and fans didn't care bc he was awesome.

I think a lot of people are reading into people saying they are glad Smitty's gone as hate'n him.

Smitty was awesome here! "WAS"

If you think he was still the Smitty of old, well, he's not. You can say "look what's he's doing now!!" but, you can say that about a lot of WR's. Look at the rules! He's playing within them!

I still don't think him being dropped from the team has anything to do with his decline'n skills. because obviously, he's still playing at a high level.

More than likely, it was the "attitude" that was being looked at by the new regime at the top and thought that it'd be better for the young team that's being built to not have that "attitude" to learn from. (By example)

BTW, whoever said "We have Ricky Proehl" to coach the young players when Steve was here. Ricky became the WR coach last season if I recall. Wasn't he just a consultant or assistant before that? So, no, they didn't have Ricky to mentor and coach.

Not that that is here nor there. if I remember correctly Smitty talked about how he respected Ricky, but as a coach didn't really agree with his methods all the time... or how he kept talking about how he would soon be a better slot guy...? Smitty didn't want to do that, but Ricky was kind of moving him towards that?

Maybe I'm just too tired... but, those are things I recall from last season anyway.

And hell, when Ricky did get the coaching gig full time, look what the WR's under him did! They got better!

Smitty is Smitty. he makes no bones about it. Said it in his interview. He's just going to be himself.

I wish him all the best as a player, as long as he keeps playing. But, when it comes to the Panthers, I hope he's shut out.

In the long run, I believe the move of Smith, out of Carolina, will be big dividends.

That's my rant... sorry... had to finally say something, cuz I've not said much about it since it all went down.

The irony of Smith's previous comments/attitude towards helping other receivers; didn't Ricky Proehl help and/or influence SS as A PLAYER when they were in the league/on the Panthers together?

Smith has said this himself many times. Talk about selfish.

the hardy tag might kill us this year.

that is my only concern. I know there was no way of him knowing about hardy but damn that 13 million could have been used for o line help.

i get what he was trying to do. give a year for another de to step up whether that be ealy or alexander because the d line makes our team elite (i think addison is to small and will always be a 3rd down specialist) but DG makes people uncomfortable here the way he goes about business. no loyalty. also crazy we were close to signing peppers back.

big cuts are gonna happen every year. I think kalil and cj maybe gone in the next couple of years. possibly td.

Lmao at people saying he didn't mentor wrs..........who da fug mentored Calvin Johnson,Aj green, josh Gordon,Kennan Allen,Julio jones, dez Bryant,Andre Johnson ......even Blackmon can be on this list

Also quit with the steve smith is about himself bologna it's retarded to think so, along with the Benjamin wouldn't have progressed if smith was on the team......just stop he stated he wanted to be in the slot years ago

Wow, so you really have no clue how tight Julio Jones and Roddy White are, do you??

And I'm sure, if we looked into the other guys, we would see similar situations.

Helping and montoring players, goes on way more than you may think or realize, in professional sports.

It all depends on the individual player.
