Should we sit Cam?

  1. 1. Should the Panthers sit an injured Cam and go with DA?

    • Yes - sit Cam to allow him to heal

    • No - play Cam even if he's dinged up

    • Maybe - play Cam but only if we bring back the QB runs

What's crazy is I feel like he's more exposed now not running and sitting in the pocket and being tentative to run.

Honestly cam looks awkward out there. When he's at full capacity he protects himself and forces his will on others which in and of itself protects him more than it does now

I'll actually say yes. Please, please don't pretend that DA doesn't give us a good chance to win.

Also pie for an actually engaging post TC.

Look He needs to run, I mean it's just a massive part of his and our offense. It needs to happen. But do you want to expose him to that? Do you trust the oline to keep him clean (you really trust Nate Chandler and Byron Bell to protect Cam? Byron Bell against Terrell Suggs this week?)

We can't forget how much Cam got knocked around last week, and he got hit A LOT  against Detroit also... all signs point to him getting the same this Sunday.

We should do whatever Cam and more importantly, whatever our training staff dictates.

So your "poll" is useless, especially since it has no direct result to whether or not he plays

Can you be sure?  I have insider source that is an insider source that has a source that says a "higher up" in the FO makes a lot of his decisions based on The HUDDLE.

Passing wise he is still better than DA so he should play

Absolutely.

People forget that we were one gift interception away from losing at Tampa. I like DA a lot, but he's a backup for a reason.

As an aside, I'm a bit concerned that Cam hasn't recovered better from his offseason surgery. Hopefully, it's okay and is still healing properly, but it seems to be a very slow process.

it's just a question.  no one thinks the poll will dictate what actually happens.  if you really feel about what you said, what is your point being here because nothing no one says matters.

Panthers.com writer Bryan Strickland weighs in:

Running the ball is about the only thing Cam Newtonicon-article-link.gif isn't doing efficiently through his first two starts, and that's not something Anderson brings to the table.

"He was 24-for-35 for 250 yards, one touchdown and a quarterback rating of 98.5. You tell me that's what he's going to average throughout the year, and I'll take it every week," head coach Ron Rivera said of Newton's performance in the loss to the Steelers. "You're going to win football games with that, but we didn't. That's disappointing.

"So what were the factors? Three sacks, and we lost two fumbles. Both fumbles resulted in points for them. Touchdowns. Fourteen points. You can't have that."

Among NFL quarterbacks with at least two starts, Newton has the sixth-best passer rating at 99.- better than Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady. He's completed exactly two-thirds of his passes – the exact same percentage as Peyton Manning – and he's one of five quarterbacks with two or more starts yet to throw an interception.

Coming off offseason ankle surgery and a preseason rib injury, Newton hasn't been effective as a runner and hasn't run as often in an attempt to protect him from further injury, but he has improved as a passer. If sitting Newton would clearly improve his ability to run in the near future, perhaps the Panthers would consider such a move - especially given how well Anderson has played - but Rivera said Newton realistically will have to deal with soreness throughout the season. Regardless of Newton's current health, the Panthers are working to figure out a balance that includes using him in the running game while limiting the hits he takes.

Yeah seriously, every second he holds the ball longer I start yelling exponentially louder at the TV "throw it, THROW IT!"

It's almost like he's not confident enough to escape or at least try to so he just sits, makes me so damn nervous.  Although I think his progression reading has improved which is good.

It pisses me off that you see Big Ben throw it in less than 2 seconds multiple times, showing that their gameplan was to get it out of his hand quickly against our D-line (makes sense).  Why can't we do that?  Get the ball out of Newton's fugging hand Shula so he doesn't end up on IR.

Don't sit him. Protect him by calling quicker pass plays. What the hell type of team is this that a QB is "not himself" and "hurting his team" because he's our running game anymore?. This tells me that we haven't got that much better on offense. Just our receivers and Cam got better.

Ron Rivera,Shula, Gettleman, and some of the fanbase don't get it either. You can't rely on your QB to be Peyton Manning and Marshawn Lynch to win games and think its going to last. What other team does that? It idiotic. When we have suck ass players we just expect Cam to pick up the slack no matter how ridiculous.

The Colts have a bad running game. I don't see anyone bitching for Luck to prop it up for them. So why should Cam? Shula and that O-line just need to step it the f*ck up...

    • That's what I meant when I said would rather have that kind of player on a rookie deal. Vs a guy coming off of it is what I didn't say. Again, if the team wasn't in such need of meaningful talent then overpaying a little for an older blocking TE the coach could trust wouldn't be unusual. Giving up more than 1 pick is just dumb given the situation for us tho and there is still repairing what that last cap guy did before they can hit normal opperating IMO. Spending money like the peak Saints with so little talent was not a good combo.
    • We need 2 tes if we don't resign tremble.  And Mayer is a several year vet so it's not like we'd have 3 rookies in the te room.  Just spitballin here
    • I’ve been holding out on this because I knew I would just be called a homer. I’m sure some will still say I am and that we shouldn’t care about the underwear Olympics without seeing the tape. That being said…. this guy is an absolute freak. 6’3 220, 43” vertical, and 4.38 unofficial 40. And I can tell you I am not surprised in the slightest by following him since he was an under recruited high schooler putting up 232 tackles, 4 sacks, and 8 forced fumbles his senior year of high school (ONE YEAR!). He developed into the leader on the defense and was always the one making clutch plays.  He is going to be the Luke Kuechly for a defense at safety for a decade. I expect some team will draft him top 15, maybe even top 10. I go back and forth on whether you use a top 10 pick on a safety but at the end of the day, I think you pick a superstar no matter what position. I would prefer us get a top pass rusher or maybe even WR but I would be thrilled to land Nick E if we don’t get one of those guys. Would much rather have him over a guy like Jaylon Walker who is super intriguing but doesn’t have the production to back it up.
