Steve Smith now in the top-ten for most 100-yard games

According to Pro Football Reference, he now has 45 100-yard games - tied with Issac Bruce for 10th-most all-time. Here are the players ahead of him:

1. Jerry Rice (76)

2. Randy Moss (64)

3. Marvin Harrison (59)

4. Terrell Owens (51)

5. Don Maynard (50) 

6. Andre Johnson (50) [active]

7T. Michael Irvin (47)

7T. Torry Holt (47)

9. Jimmy Smith (46) 

10T. Steve Smith (45)

 

I think he's a Hall of Fame lock if he can get to 51 100-yard games. It'll be tough but going ahead of that sort of talent would really pay dividends towards being counted among them. For reference, here's where he ranks in other categories, excluding playoffs:

*Receptions - 854 (22nd)

*Receiving yards - 12,487 (18th)

*Yards per catch - 14.6 (17th)

*Reeiving TDs - 68 (36th)

*Receiving YPG - 67.5 (27th)

*All-purpose yards - 16,897 (15th, current active leader)

*Yards-per-touch - 14.2 (18th)

With a 101-yard receiving game at Cleveland Sunday, Steve Smith now has 25 career 100-yard receiving games on the road. Only Jerry Rice (39) and Marvin Harrison (26) have more.

The five catches for 101 yards pushed Smith to 290 yards for the season, the most by a player in the first three games with the franchise since Anquan Boldin's 287.

After today's game he is now tied with Torry Holt and Michael Irvin. If he can manage three more his entire career, he will be tied with Don Maynard and Andre Johnson - although, given how this season is going, he could very well get five or six more and pass Terrell Owens. 

Also, he already has more yards and touchdowns than he did in the entirety of the 2010 season. He's on pace for 93 receptions, 1,528 yards, and 11 touchdowns - which would be his second best season ever behind 2005. And given how they are giving him in the area of 8 targets per game, it's not completely out of the picture.

Reggie has a ring for his resume. Let Smitty win a ring and then I agree with your inequality.

Doesn't matter.

Randy Moss and TO. Of course they might have a better career but 89 is a much better receiver than Wayne. Reggie had been healthier and played 95% of his career with Manning.

Smitty played with Delhomme who was an above average QB, and guys like Moore and Clausen.

      If we are going to spend the money anyway, maybe the signing is not as bad as it seems.  Mays outperformed Corbett (before his injury and if you go back to last year, Corbett has been below average) and then Christensen took the job and Mays quickly took it from him and never looked back.  He could use improvement reaching to the next level (LBs) but picking up stunts and blitzes---he was surprisingly good.  Run blocking needs some work, but he is 25.  Corbett, in my view, should be G/C depth and if Mays steps back, he is there.  Mays should start because this team is building for the future and 30 year old players are not building blocks.  We shall see.  That is how I think about it, but there are many factors we do not know. Having said that, I like what Zavala is doing, and I do not want to bring in someone who would take opportunities away from him.  Zavala was really good at RG down the stretch, and in limited duty, was awesome. In fact, we have a guard from the PS who played briefly and did well, but he only played a few plays.  He is 25 and I recall that fans of his former team were upset when we signed him.   Maybe as the backup center only (Corbett).  You need 2 centers to run practices efficiently.  I cannot say enough about the OL coaches on this staff.  What they have done is overshadowed by the Lewis / Hunt signing.  Mays, Ekwonu, Zavala--impressive growth.
