6 years, $150,250,000, $54,000,000 guaranteed, Projected contract for Cam

Here's some numbers before the cliff-jumping begins

$19 million=dead money we have on the books this year for players no longer on the team

$13 million=Hardy's contract, pretty sure he's not gonna be back next year

-$4 million we'll still be on the hook for Smitty's contract in 2015

so $28 million will be freed up next year

add that Cam's already scheduled to make $14 million in 2015, and you realize that Gettleman >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Hurney

Edit: Other player's salaries will go up in 2015, so they will chew into that $28 million, too, so a couple more re-negotiations or cuts will prolly need to be made, but it's now realistic to see that we can keep both Cam and Luke without killing the salary cap and crippling the roster.

It's not really that simple. We will have new dead money next year. All be it not that much hopefully.

Also while we don't have Hardy on the books next year other players salaries are going up. So if Hardy's was still here at 13 million that would probably put us over the cap so him being gone just reduces the amount we are over.

This will show you how much we have committed for next year already. These numbers are for only 38 players. So once you add in 15 more players, practice squad, rookie contracts, and IR we should be around 139m. Cap is at 133m but expected to go up. Also we should be able to rollover some from this year into next.

With that being said I still expect Cam's contract to be between 130m and 150m for 6 years. I wouldn't be surprised if something is agreed upon in the next few weeks.

It's a big number right now, sure...but he (and Luck and others) are going to get it.

With the cap raising at least 10 more million (which it will in the next couple of years, supposedly), and the inflation of QB contracts, Cam will get 20-25 million and we will be idiots if we don't pay it. AVERAGE QBs are getting 20 these days. We won't be the only cap-strapped team out there, we'll just be in the same situation as everyone else who has a franchise QB. Just be glad we're not having to offer 20-25 a year after an old rookie deal like Bradford and others had. Yikes.

Greatest QB after 3 years in NFL history. Greatest skill set in NFL history. Greatest contract for greatest of all time? Sounds fair to me.

Been many a talented athlete that couldnt put things together and win when it matters. (playoffs/championship)

Cam is still young so that could change (i expect it to change this year tbt)

I just feel that kind of money is for proven playoff / championship winners who are also elite during the regular season.

He can ask for that kind of money and get it. And it won't break the bank. You expect him to get 20-30 million in a signing bonus for a 5 or 6 year contract. And it is easy to see him getting another 20-25 million guaranteed in salary for years 2 and 3. So you have the 54 million covered and you just have to put in the unguaranteed amount which can range from a low of 4 or 5 thousand to a high of 30 million . And you would heavily backload the contract for numerous reasons. We are still cap strapped and we could use the money in years 1 and 2. He got a ton of money in a signing bonus which was more than Kaepernick got and he can be highest paid guy in the league . Any huge money at the end would be restructured with an extension which would pay him a ton more or allows us to readjust his salary if he becomes largely a passer and he stays where he is right now in terms of statistics. Because we have to wonder that if Cam is having problems with injury at 25 largely due to running, what it will be like at 30 after 5 more years of taking abuse. I suspect that everyone will want him to run only on scrambles and even then only to avoid a sack which risks injury anyway. So he is still a dual threat but not the running weapon he is now. So the equation has to weigh heavily on his passing ability which so far this year has been good. But let's see how he does this year because his future is really as a passer not a runner. They all slow down , just some sooner than others. Randall Cunningham, Donovan McNabb, Fran Tarkenton, Steve Young among others all succumbed to injury as they aged. The question is not will Newton end up being a primarily pocket passer but when. And will he continue to improve as he masters the offense and makes it his own like most greats have done. After all some folks thought he would need 2 years or more to learn the nfl game. We are a sight better off than that. Any contract has to recognize his value if he continues to progress but also recognize the reality that he is going to lose some of his dual threat as he ages and the franchise values him even more meaning the Panthers won't be wanting him to take anymore abuse than he has to. Of course the problem is Cam is going to be Cam and that means running with abandon whenever he sees an opening. So injury remains a concern.

TL/DR: we can afford him and make the contract work recognizing that as he matures into a pocket passer his value could change based on several factors.

As long as you're not the one having to pay it, what difference does it make what Cam makes? He and Luke ARE this franchise. Not one person in this thread understands the salary cap enough to know what impact such a hypothetical contract would have on it. And you can count on Cam to be worth every penny he gets unlike some other guys we've signed and resigned to massive contracts.

You dont need to be Ben Benanke to understand the gist of a contracts affect on the salary cap. They are going to pay Newton and that's a given. We can only hope that in 5 years we dont look back and regret it. I dont think we will.

It's already a done deal that it will be the biggest contract the Panthers have ever given out. Only question is if it will be the biggest contract in NFL history.

No, it won't be. He deserves to get paid, but not that much. Not until he wins it all. Same with Luck. He too will get paid. More than Cam I bet. But neither deserve to be paid more than anyone in history until they win a ring.

He won 3 national titles in 3 years with 3 different teams in college and took the worst team in the league to a first round bye in year 3. A good GM should pay based on expected production, not past results. I have zero doubt this deal will look like a steal in five years.
