Florio’s take : The jury remains out on whether Colin Kaepernick is a franchise quarterback. The verdict is in on whether the Cardinals can find a way to win, no matter who is injured or suspended or otherwise not available.

Florio’s pick : Cardinals 20, 49ers 17.

i see whoever drafts Mariota out of Oregon having the same issues... if you cant play in the pocket... YOURE DONE

I just pointed out to you in the other thread how scouts think Mariota is a good pocket passer. That's why he's being projected Top 5. Nobody thought Kaepernick was a good pocket passer, which is why nobody had him going 1st Round (I was surprised Kaepernick went early 2nd R, but there was a run on QBs that year with 5 QBs taken before him: Cam, Locker, Gabbert, Ponder, Dalton).

And just look at Mariota compared to Kaepernick with your own eyes: see how Mariota has a quick release while Kaepernick has that long wind-up? See how Mariota actually puts a nice touch on the ball while Kaepernick often just rifles it in a straight line?

And, like i pointed out to you in the other thread: Cam was a run-first QB at Auburn (#1 in SEC in rushing yds) who didn't play much under center, which was a question mark for scouts. Mariota doesn't play much under center either. And like with Cam out of college, it's going to question mark to see if Mariota can be a good QB when he has to play under center. But despite that, like I pointed out to you in the other thread, scouts think both Cam and Mariota showed enough talent as pocket passers to be to be top 5 picks. Nobody thought that about Kaepernick

Kaepernick coming out of college was like T3bow: great running QB/not very good pocket passer. Mariota coming out of college is like Cam: great running QB/good pocket passer (but hardly any experience under center, which of course is a question mark)

the most interesting thing about Kaepernick is that despite not being a good passing QB, he's still hard to stop when running the read-option. It's interesting because the read-option is becoming more and more prevalent in today's NFL...

in 2006, the Falcons busted out the read option with a sub-par pocket passer/great runner who had just turned 26 in Michael Vick. In the first game, they ran for 306 yards against Monte Kiffin and the Bucs. It worked all year: she Falcons led the NFL in rushing with 183.7 yards per game and Vick became the 1st quarterback in history to rush for 1,000 yards. Vick was in jail the next two seasons, so we never got to see what he could do during his prime years.

Fast forward to 2012: in 2012, you had four teams running read-option: Carolina, Washington, San Franciso and Seattle, three of which went to the playoffs: NFC East champions Washington (10-6), NFC West champions San Francisco (11-4-1) and Seattle (11-5)

over the off-season, you had all these empty threats about stopping the read-option like: “That’s the flavor of the month,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin declared, adding, “We look forward to eliminating it."

Then 2013 saw TRIPLE the amount of read option plays run as in 2012, with eight teams running it, four of which went to the playoffs: Eagles, Seahawks, Panthers and 49ers. Seattle, which won the Super Bowl, ran DOUBLE the read option in 2013 as they did in 2012. And like in 2012, the read-option run far outperformed the typical NFL rush in ypc again in 2013

one of the multiples reason the read-option is so much better than your typical run play is because your typical run play is 10-on-11 while the read-option, when run right, is 11-on-10 (and you can pick the defender you target to take out of the play, which is usually the others team's best defender)

the only flaw with the read-option is that you put your QB at a higher risk of getting hurt. But, executed correctly, the read-option poses no more risk than a traditional pass play, during which a quarterback — eyes focused downfield, arm extended, unable to protect himself — is a sitting target (note how Bradford blew his knee out in back to back seasons)

now sure, the read-option is great for your running game, but you still need a passing game. You need to pick up 3rd and longs and you need a balanced offense. That's why you'd be dumb to take a QB first round if you don't think he is a good pocket passer, no matter how great he runs

i watch as much tape as i can, with the videos provided on youtube on quaretrback prospects... and from whats ive seen i rarely see Mariota going through his second and third read like winston... he is a 1 read and run qb, Cam Newton was able to get away with in his rookie year... because he was the biggest guy on the field.. But i see Mariota struggling with injuries like RG3... anytime you have 2 knee injuries in college( thats not a good sign)... scouts looked at the talent of rg3 and ignored his college injuries too... not saying mariota will be injury prone, but he will learn that almost every player in the nfl has 4.4 speed

He’s just good enough to take your breath away and just sloppy enough to take your breath away — in other words, he’s the rich man’s Geno Smith. The short answer: Absolutely. Eli threw five picks against Seattle just last year. We’ll see another Full Delhomme sooner than you think. But anytime your star QB gets successfully compared to Geno Smith AND Jake Delhomme, you’re probably in trouble. I think the Niners might be in trouble. Our Unexpected Year From Hell candidates have been narrowed down to New Orleans, Indianapolis and San Francisco. (I’m counting out Kansas City because that was an Expected Year From Hell.) One of those three teams is going 6-10 or 5-11.

Cam wasn't a "Run and Read" QB during his rookie year.

 

He sat tall, upright and strong in the pocket and made his throws.

 

This is a big misconception many have about Newton based off of false media evaluations going into the draft.

 

He's probably better at going through his progressions now. But that doesn't mean (especially for a rookie QB) he didn't stand tall in the pocket. And Cam was better under conventional sets than the Read Option as well.
