Mike Mitchell talks about playing the Panthers

Always made me wonder why we didn't offer him a multi year deal when we signed him. I realize he was JAG until he got here, but he would have been a cheap sign.

Then again, they didn't ask me.

I agree. I would think signing a player like Mitchell (who you think has talent + is still young) to a 2-year, small deal would be the best bet. I know those signings could be risky, but it seems like a risk/reward scenario.

I think this may be the case with Cason, if I remember correctly.

Who says they didn't offer him one, and if they did, what would have been his reason to take a small multi-year deal?

Other thing I wonder about in Pittsburgh...

Mike Tomlin wasn't really given a choice whether to keep Dick LeBeau or not.  Regardless of who the head coach is, LeBeau is likely the Steelers DC for as long as he chooses to be.

But LeBeau is a 3-4 zone blitz guy while the vast majority of Tomlin's work prior to the Steelers was in 4-3, Cover 2 systems.  Most Steeler coaches let LeBeau run all things defense, but Tomlin was known for being a hands-on guy.

I kinda wonder how those two mesh.

I've always wondered if these old coordinators lose something mentally. Or if they can't work the same hours as they age. Dick is older than my grandpa and all my grandpa does is watch the Price is Right and Bonanza while drinking and smoking.

The reason I think they didn't offer him a multi year deal? Because he was JAG on a bad Raiders team. If he took a small 1 year deal. Why wouldn't he take a decent multi year deal? He wasn't going to get big money, because he hadn't earned it. We probably didn't know what we were getting either.

Whose to say? He was an unknown, and took a cheap 1 year deal. Did we offer him more years? Did he turn it down? I would think no. Why would a guy who was a back-up turn down a multi year deal?

Gman obviously saw something in him. All I know is we didn't have a bunch of money. Maybe Gman didn't want to give out the money a multi year deal was going to cost. Especially to a back-up.

My point exactly.

Hard to say.

I know Jim Johnson was still an effective coach well into his later years.
